1954 Mercedes W 196 -- $24 million
The holy grail of racing cars, it was introduced at the 1954 French Grand Prix at Reims, and went on to dominate Formula 1 racing for both the 1954 and 1955 seasons. What made the automobile so special was its revolutionary valve system, which utilized positive control without having to resort to springs.

This car was raced by legendary drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss before ending up in a museum in the 1980s. The car was sold for a couple of millions to finance renovations at the museum, and sold again in 1990 to a French industrialist for $24 million. A German businessman is currently the owner; he reportedly paid less then half the amount in the late '90s

Well, he has certainly paid less then what was paid for n.2 back in 1990 (Ferrari 250 GTO). Remember the hype after the death of Enzo Ferrari?

Guarda questa classifica e' sbagliata per diversi motivi...
prima del tutto la vendita della W196 a 24 milioni di $ come quella di una 250 GTO a 16,6mln di $ o 14,6 mln di $ secondo altri entrambe attorno al 1990 appartengono alla sfera della fantasia di chi ha fatto l'inchiesta perche basate al sentito dire e non a fatti conceti comunque se non sbaglio il prezzo assegnato per la W196 che prima apparteneva al museo MB era di 4,5mln di $ per di piu' mancano dalla lista alcune vendite dei primi anni 2000 come quella di una della due 8c2900lm '308' per 11mln di $ quella di una della F50 GT1 per 9,075 mln di $ di cui tu stesso parli e di una bentley lo scorso anno...
Comunque lista completa presto...

Ok I'll try a translation/reduction
The list is wrong for various motivations
First of all the sale of W196 at price of 24 millions $, as that of GTO at price of 14,6 or 16,6 millions $ in 1990 is only a fantasy of the journalist.
The price of the W196 sold by the MB museum was 4,5 millions $
Moreover in the list aren't some sales happened around 2000, as the sale of one of the oly two 8c2900lm '308' ( price 11 million $ ) or the sale of a F50 GT1 ( 9,075 mln $ ) or the sale of a Bentley last year
