Volkswagen is set to steal this week’s Qatar motor show with its latest ‘one-litre car’, the XL1 — a diesel hybrid concept that can deliver well in excess of 300mpg.

The new car is the third concept built to the vision of travelling 100km (62 miles) on a single litre of fuel. The first two vehicles, introduced in 2002 and 2009, used tandem seating, but the XL1 achieves the goal (or at 0.9l/100km, surpasses it) while looking remarkably conventional.

The XL1 is powered by an 800cc, two-cylinder turbodiesel powerplant (half a BlueMotion engine), producing 47bhp. It’s supported by a 27bhp electric motor that is fuelled by lithium-ion batteries. These can be charged from a domestic plug, allowing the car to travel for 35km (22 miles) on electric power alone.

The electric motor can also be used to support the diesel engine’s torque during ‘full power’ acceleration, lifting the figure from 74lb ft to 103lb ft. But it also contributes to overall efficiency that’s well beyond that of regular production cars. The XL1 requires just 8bhp to maintain a constant speed of 62mph; by contrast, a Golf 1.6 TDI requires 18bhp to achieve the same feat.

The result is a car that can return 313.9mpg and emit just 24g/km of CO2 — while being capable of a top speed of 100mph (electronically limited) and a 0-62mph time of 11.9sec. Despite having a relatively small 10-litre tank for diesel, the XL1 has a range of around 340 miles.

The XL1 uses a carbonfibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) monocoque construction, helping it to weigh 795kg. Of this, 227kg is taken up by the drive unit, 153kg the running gear, 80kg equipment (including seats) and 105kg of electrics. The body is the final 230kg.

The car’s styling is more ‘normal’ than VW’s previous one-litre concepts, although it’s clearly designed for efficiency. It’s shorter than a Polo, at 3.9m, but lower than a Lamborghini Gallardo, at 1156mm. The profile is not unlike Honda’s original Insight. But the XL1’s drag coefficient is just 0.186.

The concept is not destined for direct production. But parts of its hybrid powertrain could be used on the next generation of eco models. The matter is said to have been the subject of intense debate within the VW Group in recent months, with VW itself favouring a stronger push towards diesel hybrids and Audi flagging up its Wankel-based range-extender technology.

Two-seat XL1 brings vision of the 1-litre car close to production maturity

Wolfsburg / Doha, 25 January 2011 - Future mobility is one of the most stimulating topics of our time. The key question here: Just how much could the energy consumption of cars be reduced if all the stops were pulled out for efficiency? There is now an answer to this question, and Volkswagen is delivering it in the form of the new XL1. Combined fuel consumption: 0.9 l/100 km. No other hybrid car powered by an electric motor / internal combustion engine combination is more fuel efficient. The prototype will be unveiled in a world debut at the Qatar Motor Show (26 - 29 January).

Conceptually, the XL1 represents the third evolutionary stage of Volkswagen's 1-litre car strategy. When the new millennium was ushered in, Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Piëch, who is today Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG, formulated the visionary goal of bringing to the market a production car that was practical for everyday use with a fuel consumption of 1.0 litre per 100 km. In the new XL1, Volkswagen is demonstrating that this goal is now within reach.

The new Volkswagen XL1 attains a CO2 emissions value of 24 g/km, thanks to a combination of lightweight construction (monocoque and add-on parts made of carbon fibre), very low aerodynamic drag (Cd 0.186) and a plug-in hybrid system - consisting of a two cylinder TDI engine (35 kW / 48 PS), E-motor (20 kW / 27 PS), 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) and lithium-ion battery. The results: with fuel consumption of 0.9 l/100 km, the new Volkswagen XL1 only emits 24 g/km CO2. Since it is designed as a plug-in hybrid, the XL1 prototype can also be driven for up to 35 kilometres in pure electric mode, i.e. with zero emissions at point of use. The battery can be charged from a conventional household electric outlet. Naturally, battery regeneration is also employed to recover energy while slowing down and store as much of it as possible in the battery for re-use. In this case, the electric motor acts as an electric generator.

Despite the very high levels of efficiency, developers were able to design a body layout that offers greater everyday practicality, incorporating side by side seating rather than the tandem arrangement seen in both the first 1-litre car presented in 2002 and the L1 presented in 2009. In the new XL1, wing doors make it easier to enter and exit the car. Further progress has been made by manufacturing body parts from carbon fibre reinforced polymer parts (CFRP), a technique used in Formula 1 car construction. Once again, Volkswagen has successfully achieved significant reductions in production costs– an important step forward to make viable a limited production run of the XL1. Background: together with suppliers, Volkswagen has developed and patented a new system for CFRP production in what is known as the aRTM process (advanced Resin Transfer Moulding).

In un Paese di petrolieri presenti una vettura che consuma pochisssssssimo???????? :shock:

Dato che il Qatar possiede il 17% di Volkswagen e il 10% di Porsche sì e lo fai con tutti gli onori e i manager che si inginocchiano ai piedi degli emiri.

I petrolieri arabi non sono per niente stupidi: vendono combustibili fossili e investono buona parte dei profitti sulle tecnologie alternative tutelandosi sui possibili scenari futuri.

Questa concept va benissimo per loro.

Esteticamente mi ricorda un po' quei concept giapu futuristicissimi che io e Touareg guardavamo negli anni '80 (si lo so che li guardavi anche te, è inutile che dici di no :D) con un po' di paura perchè facevano pensare ad un futuro asettico e privo di sprizzi sprazzi frizzi lazzi di fantasia, e poi chiudevamo il 4R con la recensione del Salone e pensavamo "ma no poi tanto non sarà mica così, no?" :D
