Top Ferrari personnel brush with disaster while on holiday in Asia
Ferrari team principal Jean Todt and chief designer Rory Byrne both had lucky escapes from the devastating tsunami that ravaged South Asia on Boxing Day.
Todt was on holiday with his actress girlfriend Michelle Yeoh in Malaysia, and was the first to inform the team that he was okay. But Ferrari's greatest concern was for Byrne, who owns a scuba diving school on the coast of Thailand, where the death toll is already in the thousands.
“Rory and his family are safe,” reeported a spokesman for the Maranello team. “We kept in contact with him throughout the weekend, and his house is secure.”
Sunday's disaster, triggered by the most powerful earthquake for 40 years, has so far claimed over 75,000 lives but the gruesome casualty figures are still climbing relentlessly. Meanwhile the survivors face a new danger from water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and malaria. A huge international relief effort co-ordinated by the UN is in progress.
