The 2009 Flex is a full-size crossover is slated to glide into Blue Oval dealerships next summer.
The unusually-styled people mover (a dead ringer for Ford’s recent Fairlane concept) has available seating for seven, and will offer novel available interior features like second-row footrests and an available refrigerator(!). Having recently abandoned the minivan segment, and struggling to sell its Freestyle (now Taurus X), Ford desperately needs this to be a game-changer.
The Flex’s squared-off flanks are at least visually interesting, with Ford’s trademark flat-band grille echoed in scalloped side panels. The greenhouse is also of interest, incorporating a blacked-out motif that draws attention to the floating roofline, which will be available in White Suede, Silver, or body color. Standard 18-inch wheels and tires keep the Edge planted both visually and physically, and 19-inchers will be available.
Powered by Ford’s 3.5-liter V-6 yoked to a six-speed automatic, the drivetrain is expected to produce in excess of 260 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque. With available all-wheel drive, the vehicle won’t be off-road capable, but
it should provide family-friendly foul-weather security.
