Piu' vedo il bruco, e piu' mi piace. Qui lo dico, ad imperitura memoria. SARA' UN SUCCESSONE!!!
Ah... Se solo l'avessero fatta bella fuori...
PS. ho scoperto che la diesel ha le feritoie di raffreddamento che si chiudono quando non necessarie, analogamente a BMW e Ford

What is it? It’s the car – or rather, the engine – that promises to bring Honda’s latest generation of Civic into line with most of its rivals. The hatchback was relaunched recently with a relatively large 2.2-litre diesel engine, but this new 1.6-litre motor will go on sale in autumn 2012.
The new engine has little in common with its larger stablemate, however. It has an aluminium block, and weighs around 170kg – 50kg less than the 2.2. It produces 118bhp at 4000rpm, and peak torque of 221lb ft arrives at 2000rpm.
Honda has yet to release economy figures, although it has stated that the new motor – which comes with engine stop-start as standard – will emit less than 100g/km of CO2.
What’s it like to drive? Our brief test run on Honda’s Twin Ring Motegi race circuit wasn’t an ideal proving ground, but the 1.6 felt strong at low revs. Like most small diesels, it has a relatively narrow power band - it’s all done and dusted by 4000rpm – but it’s gutsy enough to make the Civic feel rapid if you’re prepared to keep changing gears. Honda’s slick six-speed manual transmission helps here, too.
Refinement under hard acceleration isn’t really any better than the class average, though, and while the motor does settle at motorway cruising speeds, it’s still a rumble beyond what you’d hear from a Golf’s powerplant. The Civic’s stop-start system doesn’t feel quite as fast, either, but it’s still decent.
What’s it like inside? Much like any other of the new Civics – which means that material finish is good, the boot is a good size and there are nice practical touches such as rear seats with folding bases.
On the other hand, headroom will be an issue for taller drivers and the driver-focused, wraparound dashboard – a clear carry-over from the previous generation of car – is as much a ‘Marmite’ feature as ever. You’ll either love or hate its plethora of buttons, although at least some of the wilder computer game-influenced colours have been toned down this time.
Should I buy one? You won’t be able to until the third quarter of next year. The 1.6 is a solid effort – and this engine option should be the pick of the Civic range when it turns up. However, we’d be surprised if the new engine alone is enough to lift the car above the strong class leaders.

Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC
New small-capacity diesel promises greater efficiency than ever

Rating:
The new Honda Civic has had a mixed reception so far. We were impressed by the 2.2-litre diesel but less so by the 1.8-litre petrol.
The 148bhp diesel has had its power increased and torque upped, while it delivers great economy at 67.3 mpg. But it’s expensive. The 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol isn’t cheap either, and has to be revved hard – it feels pretty unresponsive at low revs.

So the need for a new engine is clear – and Honda is pinning its hopes on a new turbodiesel. The four-cylinder 1.6-litre i-DTEC certainly promises to be an interesting addition to the range, and has some clever technology on its side. Honda claims it will offer an unbeatable blend of fuel economy and power output, delivering best in class figures for both.
Key to achieving this is its low weight. An aluminium open deck block is used to shed the pounds – indeed, Honda claims it is the lightest engine of its type in the world, and at 170kg, it weighs significantly less than the 2.2. A more compact auxiliary system helps to reduce friction, too. Improvements in the cooling system reduce CO2 consumption by 15 per cent. When combined with the compact high-efficiency turbocharger, the results are impressive.
There’s plenty of pull from low-down and acceleration is strong from 2,000rpm-4,000rpm, although you have to work the admittedly solid six-speed manual gearbox hard to keep in the power band. Refinement is adequate at high speeds, although not on a par with the best in the class.
It promises to be a winner in terms of efficiency, too. Estimated fuel economy will be around the 75mpg mark, and sub 100-g/km emissions are promised, meaning free road tax.
Elsewhere, the rest of the package reflects the upgrades made to the rest of the range. The cabin uses better quality materials and the dash is more logically laid out. There’s plenty of space, too.
Re-tuned suspension has improved the Civic’s ride, and it makes for agile handling and an enjoyable drive. Key to this engine’s success, though, will be price, and with it not due to be launched for another 12 months, Honda is playing its cards close to its chest in terms of what you might expect to pay.
Get it right, and it will be an interesting alternative to the class leaders.
