FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen's Audi unit said on Wednesday its June sales rose 16.3 percent to more than 78,700 units worldwide.
The firm said first-half sales rose 8.2 percent to nearly 422,000 vehicles.
"In the first half of the year, we have created optimal conditions for a new record year," Martin Winterkorn, chief executive of Audi, said in a statement.

Audi CEO Says H1 Volume, Revenue Up 7 Pct -Paper
Volkswagen AG's (VOWG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) premium car unit Audi (NSUG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) will report first-half volumes and sales up 7 percent, Audi Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn said in a newspaper interview released on Sunday.
"The first half of the year was good. Volume and sales have grown by around 7 percent, but about the profit we'll talk later," Winterkorn told German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel in an interview released to the media before publication on Monday.
Audi is scheduled to publish its first-half report on Aug. 2.
Winterkorn also said a doubling of volume in the United States over the next four years would be critical to Audi's current target of 1 million unit sales by 2008, up from just under 800,000 a year in 2004.
The United States should account for half of the 60,000 units it hopes to sell of its Q7 sports utility vehicle due for launch next year, Winterkorn said.
