Battle of the giants: beauty and character seal
it for the Quattroporte
Autocar, the respected British weekly, features a head-to-head between the Maserati Quattroporte, the Mercedes E55 AMG and the Jaguar XJR in its 30 March issue.
Journalist Peter Robinson got behind the wheel of the three vehicles in Tuscany to see which car best combined comfort and driver appeal.
The burning question was to establish whether the Quattroporte really was able to shatter the hopes of the colossal German and British auto companies. Mercedes and Jaguar have based their undeniable success on large, fast saloons whereas Maserati has always been involved in producing sports cars. Now, with the Quattroporte, the Modena-based manufacturer has decided to broaden its range with a luxury berlina that blends perfectly class and sportiness.
In Robinson’s opinion, the Quattroporte easily carries off the prize for looks.
This is due to its balanced proportions, elegant detailing and innovative design. The V8 engine is Italian through and through with its unmistakable rumble. The sensations the car delivers to the driver and the balance of the chassis seduces anybody who gets into the driving seat. “
It’s such a b-i-g car, yet
it wraps itself around the driver. If there was a prize for the grin-factor, nothing else gets close”.
Robinson concludes the article by stating that for its character and the intensely involving drive, enthusiasts have no alternative: the pick of the bunch is undoubtedly the Quattroporte.
