Olivier Francois may have the toughest executive challenge in Italy -- reviving the fortunes of Lancia, Fiat Group Automobiles’ slow-selling premium brand that came close to being shut down in 2004. The 46-year-old Lancia CEO, who was lured to Fiat in 2005 from PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, has been charged by Fiat group CEO Sergio Marchionne with the daunting job of nearly tripling Lancia sales by 2010 to 300,000 cars a year.

Fiat Auto’s slow-selling Lancia brand is looking to an upgraded and expanded dealer network outside Italy as key to boosting sales to 300,000 a year over the next two years. The 2010 target, set by Fiat group CEO Sergio Marchionne, calls for a 150 percent jump from Lancia’s current annual sales level.

Olivier Francois may have the toughest executive challenge in Italy -- reviving the fortunes of Lancia, Fiat Group Automobiles’ slow-selling premium brand that came close to being shut down in 2004. The 46-year-old Lancia CEO, who was lured to Fiat in 2005 from PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, has been charged by Fiat group CEO Sergio Marchionne with the daunting job of nearly tripling Lancia sales by 2010 to 300,000 cars a year.

Last year’s total: 121,000. This year’s goal is 150,000.

The upbeat Francois says the feat will be achieved by adding models, upgrading the dealer network and expanding into new markets to reduce the brand’s over-dependence on Italy, which now accounts for about 80 percent of sales. A return to right-hand-drive countries also will happen soon. Lancia withdrew from the UK in 1994 amid poor sales there and stopped all right-drive production at that time.

The Lancia boss already has one sure-fire hit. Commercials for the redesigned Musa small minivan, featuring Carla Bruni, the Italian singer-supermodel and girl friend of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, have generated enormous media and Internet buzz for Lancia. Francois declines to reveal the value of the contract with the 39-year-old Bruni, but says the media exposure alone is worth every euro.

Francois spoke with Automotive News Europe Reporter Wim Oude Weernink at the Brussels auto show in mid-January.

What does the Lancia brand stand for today?

We have a sporty heritage, but the brand today conveys an image of strong Italian character with brilliant engines and performance, daring fashionable design and refined quality. We must communicate that in style. That is why we have produced two commercials with Carla Bruni for the new Musa [minivan]. I would like to see Lancia with a credible offering in each segment of the market.

How were sales in 2007?

We sold 121,000 units, 2,000 more than our target. Our goal was to stay even for the year, not to drop, so we succeeded. We retained our market share of 4.2 percent in Italy and increased export sales by about 5 percent. More important, we did more private sales at higher transaction prices.

Fiat group CEO Sergio Marchionne wants Lancia to be selling 300,000 cars a year in 2010. Is that realistic?

That depends a lot on the product plan schedule but, as of today, it is feasible. We have a solid future-product portfolio. Sales of the entry-premium Delta HPE will start this summer and the new three- and five-door Ypsilon arrives next year. We also are considering a new Musa for 2011.

Per super car potrebbe pure essere pure una RR su base 4P.
Ad ogni modo spero di vivere abbastanza per vedere il franzoso presentare una supercar Lancia su base 8C.

beh, venderanno sicuramente piu' Ypsilon che Junior se non altro per via del fatto che la piccola Lancia ha gia' i suoi clienti da diversi anni e offre 3-5 porte

poi sui numeri.... vedremo

piuttosto non pensavo che mantenessero in produzione sia la vecchia che la nuova Ypsilon.
