TURIN -- Italian industrial group Fiat has done better than it expected in the first months of 2004, board member Franzo Grande Stevens said on Thursday.

Fiat is fighting through a restructuring plan to pull the tractor-to-robotics group back to operating breakeven this year after a deep slump in its core car sales dragged it to a record loss in 2002.

A range of new cars launched last year has helped yank sales higher and win back some market share in Europe.
