Pedestrian safety is a hot topic in Europe, where automakers are scrambling to meet new rules in 2006. Americans don't face the same edict. But, said Hans Demant, vice president for engineering at Adam Opel AG, they'll feel the effects. A rule meant to protect pedestrians flung over the front end of a car mandates about 4 inches between a vehicle's hood and any hard surface beneath it. That's changing plans for any sort of low-slung, sporty vehicle, at least until designers get the technology to raise a hood on impact. With automakers going global in their product plans, Demant said, "There are not going to be different cars for North America. You're going to see those cars in North America, like it or not."
