General Motors is laying down the gauntlet. The next-gen Cadillac CTS-V won't be here until the fall of 2008, but, with an anticipated 500 horsepower, it has the BMW M5 squarely in its sights.

The next-gen CTS-V “will be at a power level only described as unexpectedly high,” GM vice chairman Bob Lutz tells CARandDRIVER. Sources say we should be prepared for a 25-percent increase on the current car—which means 500 horsepower.

And that has us dreaming of the 505-hp, 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 that currently powers the Corvette, although GM types say there are a few possibilities vying to cram themselves into the CTS-V.

Meanwhile, having recently driven prototypes of the new CTS-V, Lutz pronounced it “flat-out incredible. I’ve never driven anything like that.”

And already he’s talking smack, warning a certain Teutonic competitor that unless the next M5 is substantially better, the CTS-V “will suck the doors off” the competition.

The new V is due in the fall of 2008 as a 2009 model. In the interim, enthusiasts must continue to embrace the 2007 CTS-V powered by the 400-hp 6.0-liter Corvette LS2 V-8 engine. With an-all new CTS sedan bowing this year, the ’07 CTS-V, which will stop production in May, will have to bridge the gap until the V makes its triumphant return as an ’09.

The 2009 CTS-V will use the "LSA" motor. This is another new supercharged, small block V8. This new blown V8 will be good for at least 500hp. A number of 515-525hp may even be possible, and even higher numbers have been rumored. The CTS-V will feature a supercharger integrated into the intake manifold. This is the same setup the upcoming Corvette SS / Blue Devil will have with its LS9 motor. However, while the Corvette SS motor will be hand built at the Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI, the Cadillac's LSA motor will be built in a conventional motor plant.

Automatic and manual transmissions will be available, and an optional paddle shift feature is also anticipated. Production on the new CTS V-Series will start in September of 2008, and will be limited to approximately 7000 units annually. Internally, GM is referring to the car as "GMX322 V S/C." In the past, the current CTS-V has suffered from rear suspension/drivetrain problems, more specifically, wheel hop. The 2009 CTS-V will feature a completely redesigned rear-end with an improved rear axle, which sources say has completely eliminated the wheel hop issue. The '09 will continue to utilize a massive set of brembo brakes up front and in back. While the wheels on this prototype are not production spec, the wider tires and larger exhaust pipes certainly are.

The Cadillac CTS-V development program has once again gone global, with a trip to Germany and the Nürburgring. Our sources at the track tell us that the actual hot laps on the famous track have been few and far between, as the Cadillac engineers continue to work on the car’s set-up. Part of that work involved an impromptu raising of the hood, and our spy was on hand to catch it with the long lens. Our look into the engine bay doesn’t exactly solve the mystery of what engine is powering the CTS-V, but the massive cross brace spanning between the strut towers seems to explain the huge hood bulge seen on all CTS-V prototypes. That brace sits high to clear some serious engine modifications, but a carefully placed piece of insulation manages to hide the hardware which lies beneath.

There has been rampant speculation about the 2009 CTS-V’s powerplant, with Motor Trend claiming that the car would get a detuned version of the Corvette Blue Devil’s 700-hp supercharged V8 making about 600- horsepower. Others have speculated that CTS-V would get a supercharged version of the 2008 Vette’s LS3 V8. And still others have said that the CTS-V wouldn’t be supercharged at all, using the 505-hp normally aspirated 7.0-liter LS7 from the current Corvette Z06. However, our bet is on the supercharged LS3 version also known as the LSA which we previously reported in a CTS-V spy story we posted yesterday. Our shot of this CTS-V’s engine bay gets us closer than ever before to an answer, but there is still some room for speculation.

Prototypes of Cadillac’s next generation CTS and CTS-V sedan have been spotted doing their rounds at Germany’s famous Nürburgring racetrack, as well as at various testing spots in the US.

Now these latest photos, taken in the US and in Germany, capture the new Caddy with its hood open. The wide silver bar across the rear of the engine compartment looks to be a prototype model of a strut bar, stiffening the connection between the tops of the strut mounts. The wide intake plenum makes it appear that the engine is naturally aspirated, not turbo or super-charged as has sometimes been speculated
