Messaggi Raccomandati:

Chrysler retires an old engine; all V-6s now are Pentastars

DETROIT -- The last of Chrysler Group's old V-6 engines has been replaced with a 3.0-liter version of the Pentastar V-6 that is being launched first in China.

Chrysler introduced the engine today in the 2014 Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee at the Chengdu Motor Show in China.

Chrysler makes the engine in Trenton, Mich., and ships it to China. Production started on July 3, and the first engines were shipped to China July 22, Chrysler said today.

The engine, based on the same compact 60-degree architecture as the 3.6-liter V-6 used on such vehicles as the Chrysler Town & Country and Ram Pickup, is rated at 230 hp and 210 lbs.-ft. of torque.

With the addition of the 3.0-liter, all Chrysler's V-6 engines are in the Pentastar family. Pentastars are used in 16 models in 11 segments.

Chrysler began production of the Pentastar engine family in March 2010 and has been gradually phasing out production of seven older V-6 engines.

The 3.0-liter V-6 generates 230 horsepower at 6,350 rpm. Its peak torque – 210 lb.-ft . (285 Nm) – arrives at 4,400 rpm.

MASERATI'S SECRET : CHRYSLER MAKES ITS ENGINE BLOCKS

Hiding beneath the hood of some of Maserati's best-selling sedans beats a secret heart of Detroit iron -- or rather, Detroit aluminum.

During the summer, workers at Chrysler Group's Trenton Engine Complex in suburban Detroit with no fanfare have been machining aluminum 3.0-liter V-6 engine blocks under the supervision of Ferrari engineers.

The blocks -- cast in Chrysler's foundry in Kokomo, Ind. -- are being shipped to Ferrari S.p.A. in Maranello, Italy, where they are finished for installation into Maserati's flagship Quattroporte and its new, hot-selling entry-level sedan, the Ghibli.

It's the first time that Chrysler -- now a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles -- has had a hand in producing engines for its parent company's luxury nameplates.

Brian Harlow, global head of powertrain manufacturing engineering for the now-combined automakers, said Chrysler is machining about 50 engine blocks per day for Maserati and soon will expand that to 80.

"It's been a real opportunity for us to learn what it means to work on high-performance engines," Harlow said.

"The level of quality is just supreme. We're going to benefit on our standard engines just because we're working on this smaller engine on a higher level."

The engine blocks are a source of pride for workers at Trenton Engine, which has built some legendary Chrysler engines, such as the Slant Six, an inline six-cylinder engine, and the 440 -- the largest V-8 ever made by Chrysler. Workers have placed signs around the plant touting it as Ferrari-certified and displaying the brand's famous prancing horse logo.

The block of the 3.0-liter V-6 is all aluminum with cast-in steel cylinder liners. Harlow said both the casting and the machining of the blocks are done to exacting tolerances.

"We collect more data on a piece-by-piece basis than on anything else that we do," Harlow said.

He said the V-6, with twin turbochargers, was designed by Ferrari and also is being machined in Europe by supplier Weber Automotive GmbH. But demand for the Maserati sedans began outstripping Weber's ability to keep up earlier this year.

That's when FCA's top leadership, including CEO Sergio Marchionne, looked to capacity in North America to fill the gap.

"It's a sensitive thing," Harlow said.

"We're Chrysler; they're Ferrari and Maserati. In no way do we want to impact in any negative way the image of either of those. We wanted to make sure we were getting it right, and we did. There's only one standard which we go by, and that's the Ferrari standard. They do not compromise."

Harlow said the interaction with Ferrari engineers "has been a good, collaborative effort," and some of the practices have been incorporated into Chrysler's other engine production.

From Automotive News:

Chrysler Pentastar V-6s to get turbos and direct injection, sources say

DETROIT -- Chrysler Group is improving its Pentastar family of V-6s, adding direct injection, turbocharging and other technology to enable smaller displacement engines to power its vehicles.

The Pentastar Upgrade -- or PUG for short -- is part of a strategy to meet tightening corporate average fuel economy standards. Sources say the improvements will boost output and increase fuel economy on the V-6 engines that power most Chrysler vehicles.

Also possible as part of the improvements: the potential for turbocharging what are now naturally aspirated engines. Meanwhile, Fiat's MultiAir variable valve timing technology will remain, sources say.

The first improved 3.6-liter V-6 is scheduled to debut in late 2015 as part of a freshening of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, sources say. A Chrysler spokesman declined to comment on the Pentastar Upgrade project.

Another example will be the redesigned Chrysler Town & Country minivan, due in 2016. Chrysler sources say the new minivan will be powered by an improved 3.2-liter V-6 instead of its current 3.6-liter V-6.

The improved 3.2-liter V-6 will be combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, as it is in some versions of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The powertrain combination, better aerodynamics and weight reductions are expected to boost the minivan's fuel economy at least 25 percent over its current EPA fuel economy rating of 17 mpg city/25 highway, the sources said.

The naturally aspirated 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 was introduced in 2010 on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Chrysler Group has spread the 3.6-liter across most of its lineup, including its top-selling products such as the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler.

Depending on the added efficiency engineers are able to achieve, the improved 3.6-liter engine could help the Ram 1500 regain the gasoline-powered fuel efficiency crown it lost last month to a turbocharged version of the 2015 Ford F-150.
