2014 Cadillac CTS Spy Photos

The next-gen CTS will punch for the middleweight crown.

What It Is: A 2014 Cadillac CTS wearing pretty heavy camouflage. It’s a prototype for the third generation of Cadillac’s bestselling model; the original CTS launched for 2003, while this car’s predecessor arrived for 2008. The current car is available as a sedan, coupe, and wagon. The sedan is what we’ve captured here; we have heard no definitive word on whether Cadillac intends to continue offering multiple body styles, but a powerful V variant is as close to a sure thing as you can get.

Why It Matters: The CTS has been the feather in Cadillac’s cap during its decade-long renaissance, quickly becoming its most popular offering and, recently, its only car. (It also has been on five consecutive 10Best Cars lists in one form or another.) For years, it’s attempted to compete on two levels, being sized more like larger cars such as the Mercedes-Benz E-class and BMW 5-series while selling at a price commensurate with those of the BMW 3-series, Infiniti G37, and Audi A4. That strategy was necessary as Cadillac fought for respect after years of woeful products ill-suited to take on the world’s best. That will change with this new model. With the new 2013 ATS, Cadillac will have a direct opponent for the 3er and A4, and will reposition the CTS as a proper 5-series fighter.

Platform: Expect the new CTS to utilize GM’s rear-drive Alpha platform, which also underpins the all-new ATS. Exact dimensional changes from the previous generation remain unknown, but it’s clear from these spy photos that the next-gen CTS will be longer than its predecessor.

The CTS will continue to wear Cadillac’s Art and Science design theme, although it may be slightly softened—witness the look of the new ATS, which downplays sharp creases in favor of a more contoured look. (The Chinese market, which GM hopes will buy the ATS sedan in large numbers, prefers less-aggressive designs.) We can’t discern many details from this prototype, but it will adopt angular exhaust finishers similar to those on the larger XTS. Finally, the head- and taillights could be placeholders at this stage of development, but the outboard positioning of the vertically oriented LED daytime running lights up front align with Cadillac’s latest vehicles. Expect them to stay there for production.

Powertrain: The current CTS offers a 270-hp, 3.0-liter V-6, as well as a 318-hp, direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6. Huge V-8 power has been reserved for the CTS-V models. We don’t expect this strategy to change much, although it’s likely—as part of the constant search for improved efficiency—that the CTS base engine will become the 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder seen in the ATS. A manual transmission may be offered again, although its availability in the current car is extremely limited, and six-speed automatics should again be employed.

Competition: BMW 5-series, Mercedes-Benz E-class, Audi A6, Lexus GS350, Acura RL.

Estimated Arrival and Price: Plan on the new CTS to arrive in late 2013 as a 2014 model. Price is tough to nail down; ATS pricing should begin at roughly $34K and the current CTS starts at $36,790. We expect the base CTS to move toward the $40,000 mark when it arrives in dealerships, which would still mark it as somewhat of a value: The cheapest BMW 5-series, the 528i, starts at $47,795

Posso esser cattivo?

E un po' d'ordine in stanza... see you later!"
