Tesla cancels longest-range Model S Plaid+

An ultra-fast version of the sedan will not be made, Musk says

Tesla's longest-range car, the Model S Plaid+, will not be built, CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet.

"Plaid+ is canceled. No need, as Plaid is just so good." Musk tweeted on Sunday.

The Model S Plaid+ would have been Tesla's highest-end model with a driving range of 520 miles (834 km).

It was unveiled at a battery event last year and Musk said it would adopt the automaker's next generation 4680 battery cells. But production was pushed back to 2022 from the end of 2021.

Musk on Sunday said original iteration of the car, the Model S Plaid, is the "quickest production car ever made of any kind."

Tesla redesigns Model S interior for first time since 2012 launch

According to the company's website the Model S Plaid can go from 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) in 1.99 seconds and has a top speed of 200 mph and an estimated range of 390 miles.

"Model S goes to Plaid speed this week," Musk said in another tweet on Sunday, without elaborating.

The Model S Plaid was scheduled to be unveiled at an event on June 3, which has been pushed to June 10.

The Model S Plaid costs $112,990, according to the company's website.

La prossima top manager di Tesla abbandona la azienda:

Tesla veteran Guillen, architect of Model 3 ramp up, leaves automaker

French executive most recently headed Tesla's heavy truck unit

Tesla has parted ways with Jerome Guillen, a 10-year veteran who most recently served as president of heavy trucking and was one of four top executives running the company including CEO Elon Musk.

Guillen left the company June 3, according to a regulatory filing Monday. He was a top lieutenant to Musk and the brains behind the ramp up of Model 3 production in 2018. The executive previously served as president of Tesla’s automotive business, and was named head of heavy trucking in March of this year.

“That is a huge and unexpected loss,” Pierre Ferragu, an analyst at New Street Research said in an email. He added the news is part of a pattern of high-level executive departures at the company. “Jerome’s contribution to Tesla will remain part of the company and the company will continue to attract other top-guns."

Guillen, who is French, joined Tesla in the fall of 2010 as the program director for the Model S, the breakthrough electric vehicle which laid the groundwork for the crossover Model X and more mass-market Model 3 that followed. He was 48 years old as of Tesla’s latest annual report.

Guillen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tesla has struggled with executive turnover for years. Guillen took a several-months-long leave of absence from the company in 2015 but returned in 2016 to lead the company’s Semi truck program.  He was promoted in 2018 to serve as the head of automotive operations.

The executive is known for building an assembly line against all odds in a tent outside of Tesla’s auto plant in Fremont, California. The cobbled-together line was instrumental to the company finally delivering on the Model 3, a bet-the-company effort that nearly bankrupted Tesla in 2018.

Guillen's sudden exit leaves Musk, Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn and Drew Baglino, a senior vice president in charge of powertrain and energy engineering, as the triumvirate atop the company, which has more than 70,000 employees globally.

“We thank him for his many contributions and wish him well in his future career,” the electric car maker said in the filing.

Guillen, who previously worked at Daimler, briefly appeared on stage when Tesla unveiled the Semi Truck in the fall of 2017. But initial production of the Semi has been delayed and is dependent on new, larger 4680 battery cells that Tesla is trying to make in-house and get from long-time suppliers like Japan’s Panasonic.

Musk said via a tweet Sunday that Tesla has canceled plans to build a longer range version of its Model S known as the Plaid +, a vehicle that also was supposed to use the new type of battery.

Musk did not address whether the availability of the 4680 factored in Tesla’s decision to cancel the upscale version of the flagship sedan. Tesla will debut the standard Plaid model at an event scheduled to take place June 10.

Tesla expects to start Model Y production in Germany by the end of the year

Crossover will get updated design and new manufacturing process, Musk tells investors

Tesla expects to start limited production of the Model Y crossover at its new plant near Berlin before the end of this year despite construction delays, CEO Elon Musk told investors.

The factory, Tesla's first in Europe, has run into bureaucratic roadblocks that forced the automaker to delay the production start from its original date of July.

On an earnings call on Monday, Musk said that Tesla "expects to be producing the new design of the Model Y in both [Germany and Texas] in limited production later this year."

Besides the plant in Gruenheide near Berlin, Tesla is also building a new factory in East Austin, Texas.

Musk spoke of the "agony of a manufacturing ramp" as the company works to expand its production network, which currently comprises plants in Fremont, California and Shanghai, China.

Tesla has hit a series of environmental and planning hold-ups at the German plant.

Most recently, two environmental groups asked a court to force Tesla to relocate a population of endangered sand lizards that live on the site as well as some adders that prey on the lizards and are considered a threatened species.

Updated Model Y

Tesla has also given itself extra work by redesigning the Model Y for its Gruenheide and Texas production to include new aluminum casting for rear body structure, including the crash rails. The Model Y built in California only casts the front body structure, itself a new technique.

Musk also said on the call that Tesla plans to make the battery pack for the new Model Y part of the body structure and they will feature new, larger 4680 cells.

"From a physics standpoint, this is the best architecture, and from an economic standpoint it is the lowest cost way to go," Musk said.

However, Musk said the company had a back-up plan to build the Model Y in Berlin and Texas with a non-structural pack and the automakers' current, smaller 2170 cells.

"We still have work ahead of us before we can achieve volume production" of the 4680 cells, Musk said.

In the interim, Tesla has begun exporting Chinese-built Model Ys to Europe with deliveries starting in August, the German news agency dpa reported, citing an official Tesla communication

The Model Y competes against premium compact and midsize SUVs. The SUV is slightly larger than Tesla's entry-level car, the Model 3 sedan.

Tesla wants to produce around 500,000 Model Y and Model 3 cars annually at the Gruenheide factory.

The Model 3 was Europe's second best-selling car for the month of June with sales of 25,934, according to figures from JATO Dynamics market researchers.

Uneven deliveries across the year however meant the car fell outside the top 10 for the first six months with a total of 66,864 sales.

Tesla again cuts the price of its Model 3

China Daily, August 9, 2021

Tesla has again trimmed the price of its Model 3 in China, in an effort to boost sales in the world's largest electric vehicle maker.

The electric vehicle maker announced that the price of China-made Model 3 Standard Range, after subsidies, has been reduced by 15,000 yuan ($2,323) to 235,900 yuan. The models are expected to be delivered in four to six weeks.

Since Tesla started production of the entry-level model at its Shanghai factory in late 2019, it is the fourth time the price has been dropped. From its original price of 328,000 yuan, the Model 3 has been reduced by a total of 92,100 yuan so far.

Tesla said that the price adjustment is based on cost fluctuations.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that the company's mission is to make electric cars affordable and has blamed vehicle price increases on a shortage of chips and raw materials.

A Tesla employee said the pricing strategy is simple-costs plus a certain and reasonable profit. Without dealers hoovering up profits and advertising costs, once the profit margins are set, the price will fluctuate only according to costs.

Yale Zhang, managing director of consulting company Automotive Foresight, said that having a production facility in Shanghai allows Tesla to source locally and more cheaply from suppliers in the Yangtze River Delta.

Tesla is aiming to reduce the price difference between the Model 3 and the Model Y, whose price was reduced in early July, Zhang said.

The starting price of the Model Y Standard Range is 276,000 yuan after subsidies, which is more than 70,000 yuan lower than the previous model at 347,900 yuan. The previously lowest-priced Model Y is not eligible for China's state subsidy because it was priced above 300,000 yuan.

Zhang forecast that the price of the Model 3 will continue to fall and end up being priced at around 200,000 yuan, considering the production capacity in China, chip shortage and the positioning of the Model 2, which is expected to launch in late 2023.

In the next two to three years when the models have longer ranges, the Model 3 could potentially pose a threat to popular models such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, Zhang said.

Compared with other markets, especially its home market of the United States, Tesla faces fiercer competition in China from local rivals, including Nio and Xpeng, and problems that include product recalls, high-profile protests by consumers and pressure from regulators, Reuters reported.

A study by Bernstein analysts found Tesla owners in China were less enthusiastic and had lower repurchase intentions than owners in the US and Europe.

"Tesla is looking to be as competitive as it can be in China. Lower prices will be a part of that aggressive market positioning," Roth Capital Partners analyst Craig Irwin was quoted by Reuters.

In China, Tesla's market share slipped to 11 percent in the electric vehicle market, which excludes plug-in hybrid cars, in the second quarter from 18 percent a year earlier, according to GLJ research.

Unlike the models produced in China, Tesla also raised the prices of the Model S Long Range and Model X Long Range in China again last week. The Model S and X are produced in the US.

Tesla sold 161,700 cars in China in the first half of this year, accounting for 41.9 percent of its global total. The sales of Model 3 reached 16,515 units in the same period. Tesla's Shanghai factory can produce more than 450,000 cars annually.
