Messaggi Raccomandati:

The new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar are here

  • S60 and V60 model
  • 0Ø100 km/h in 4.9 seconds l Limited Edition

The new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar are here, set for sale on four continents around the world in 2014. The countries set for the S60 and V60 Polestar include Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the USA, with further markets and final production numbers to be revealed next year.

”We are proud to present the S60 and V60 Polestar. A car developed for those who share our passion at Polestar: That driving really matters and that a true driver’s car should enable you to enjoy driving all year, on all roads and in all weather conditions. This is a driver’s car for real life,” said Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar.

“With the introduction of the V60 model, we are proud to continue the heritage of fast Volvo estates like the racing 850 BTCC, a tradition deeply rooted among Volvo enthusiasts,” continued Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar.

”Our motorsport co-operation with Polestar has been going on for almost two decades and it is rewarding to see how Polestar can use their experiences from motorsport to engineer such an exciting and competent car,” said Derek Crabb, Motorsport Director at Volvo Car Group (Volvo Cars).

“It is very satisfying to see how Polestar have been able to combine this level of driving performance in their interpretation of the S60 and V60 with maintained original service program, class leading safety features and certified fuel- and emission ratings. Customers buying this car will get the best from both Polestar and Volvo,” said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales & Customer Service at Volvo Cars.

All-year performance

The car is based on the latest generation Volvo S/V60 and marks the start of an extended Polestar production model range. Development of the car has been ongoing over the past years, picking up from the C30 and S60 Concept cars and the Australian S60 Polestar. Thousands of development kilometres have been driven on twisty mountain roads, on the Autobahn and test tracks from the south of Europe to the frozen north of Sweden.

”We have continued our work to create a true driver’s car which is not limited only to a few specific driving conditions, but enjoyable on everything from your favourite winding roads to taking the family for a long journey, no matter summer or winter. And in my view, we have gotten very close to our goals, something that of course is best experienced first-hand behind the wheel,” said Robert Dahlgren, Polestar racing and test driver.

Polestar performance engineering

Chassis

Upgrades include modifications made to increase rigidity of the chassis to cater for the 80% stiffer springs relative to the standard S60 R-Design. These changes combined with the tailored high performance Öhlins shock absorbers and 20” Polestar wheels results in a precise, yet comfortable, driving experience.

Brakes

The brake system has undergone substantial modifications. Most visible are the 371 millimetre ventilated front discs and six-piston Brembo calipers, guaranteeing a high level of braking performance.

Aerodynamics

To reflect the increased performance of the S/V60 Polestar, positive aerodynamic effects have been achieved through subtle, yet efficient, modifications based on data from tests in the Volvo Cars wind tunnel. The changes are visible with the front splitters, optimising the airflow underneath the car, as well as a new rear spoiler and diffusor, increasing downforce.

Engine

The six-cylinder turbo-charged T6 engine has undergone extensive development with a new twin-scroll turbo and intercooler to produce 350 HP/257 kW at 5700 rpm and 500 Nm/369 lb-ft already at 2800 rpm. The engine breathes through a 2.5” stainless steel exhaust system, making for a throaty engine note.

Transmission

The six-speed automatic gearbox features a new paddle shift system that together with the Polestar developed Haldex four-wheel drive system takes the car from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and to a limited top speed of 250 km/h. The gearbox as well as the four-wheel drive system and traction control system has been recalibrated in order to provide an active driving experience and maximum grip in all situations.

Interior

The interior has been reworked with new details, materials and Polestar colours, such as the steering wheel, seats and more, with the sole purpose of increasing driver support and control.

”All in all we have taken a major step forward in all areas, from chassis and engine to interior and exterior details. Development work has been focused on the overall package in order to create a car that you want to use every day, both from a practical and emotional perspective,” said Henrik Fries, S/V60 Polestar Technical Project Manager.

Sales and delivery

Polestar will begin delivery of the new S60 and V60 Polestar in June 2014 to the local markets.

“We are all very excited and proud over our launch of two new cars as yet another step towards a range of Polestar Engineered Volvo cars available for people like us around the world. To do it together with Volvo, one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, is greatly satisfying and we look forward to an exciting future,” said Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar.

The S60 was on Pirelli 245/35-20 street tires,

24535.jpg

While the V was on 265/35-20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport .. ..

26535.jpg

The seat is great with very nice support and the steering wheel looks very nice also,

seat.jpg

steeringwheel.jpg

The centre console face is made out of carbon or a print. Hard to see. It's not gloss but matte which is nice. To bad the doors still have the cheap plastic inlay.

There were some brushed stainless pedals and footrest in the car, more on that later...

Engine wise not much to see except for a Polestar badge and a CF strut brace,

cf-strutbrace.jpg

Brakes look stunning. Wheels are very nice quality. If they are really that nice is a matter of taste. The design itself isn't anything special. I think the high quality finish is what makes them work.

Getting rid of the chrome window trim is the best decision I think.

Then the things which caused new mixed emotions..

The spoilers and splitters,

spoiler-s.jpg

spoiler-v.jpg

splitter.jpg

Although they add a lot to the overall appearance of the car they look tacky up close..

The picture of the V spoiler shows the whobbly surface. Appears to be made out of glass fibre. Hope this is a pre production issue if not it is no better than the average after market spoiler reseller.

Next the shiny pedals.. One fell off. :o

malpedal.jpg

Another one in the category cheap tuning. Combined with the plastic flippers on the steering wheel I think these things do not belong on a car with an expected 100K Euro retail price.

These are the small things where Volvo's current sub premium position really shines through.

Also no sign of adjustability of the Ohlins shocks. Wonder if they are adjustable.

But it is a stunning car to see irl.

Volvo V60 Polestar review
volvo-v60-polestar-1-004.jpgThere will only ever be 125 Volvo V60 Polestars made for the UK market, all in right-hand drive. So even though the car costs a tear-inducing £49,775 you will always be guaranteed a certain edge of exclusivity with this car.
As it turns out, however, the Volvo V60 Polestar may appear expensive but, in reality, it has every single option upon it you could ever want for. And better than that, it’s actually rather a tasty piece of kit to drive. More than good enough in most aspects to justify its junior Audi RS4 price tag.

Built on the regular V60 production line but designed by Polestar – Sweden’s equivalent of AMG, if you like – to be very different indeed from the standard car beneath its subtly modified skin, the V60 is a proper Q-car.
Its 3.0-litre straight-six engine has been massaged in every direction to produce 345bhp and a rousing 369lb ft between 3000-4750rpm, approximately 15 per cent more than in a standard V60 T6.
The software of the paddle-shift six-speed automatic gearbox has also been completely rewritten to include much more convincing sport and auto modes, allowing proper manual shifting. Volvo claims that the V60 Polestar will hit 62mph in 5.0sec from a standing start, later running into an electronic limiter at 155mph. Economy's not so hot, at a claimed average of 27.7mpg, but few buyers will probably be put off.
Volvo hasn't restricted its changes to the powertrain. The suspension has also been thoroughly re-thought to include not just 80 per cent stiffer springs front and rear but massively more capable (and adjustable) Ohlins dampers to go with them.
Even the four wheel-drive system has been tweaked by Polestar to enable 100 per cent of the torque to be delivered to either axle, although under no circumstances has Polestar produced a tail happy V60. Despite its significantly bigger muscles, the car still retains the deep rooted sensibility of a standard Volvo, albeit with a much bigger smile on its face.
Does it succeed? In a word, yes. Performance is much stronger than before, and the new exhaust system allows the full magnificence of the 3.0-litre engine to be heard at all times but especially above 4000rpm when the baffles open up (actually they’re open all the time if you select Sport mode within the gearbox). And the handling, steering, brakes and even the ride have all taken a similarly impressive leap forwards, too.
I’m not sure I’d go so far as to call the V60 Polestar a full on keen driver’s delight; its handling still feels a touch too sensible in its set-up for that – it either understeers a bit or a lot, depending on how committed you are at the turn in point.
And its responses in general still feel a mite blunt for it to be described as anything more inspirational than “secure” – both of which are the inevitable consequence of the car still mauling the scales at some 1834kg before so much as a single human being or hunk of luggage has been placed in the impressively vast load area.
Despite this, the V60 Polestar is still a car you can revel in and enjoy driving for what it is. And it’s also quick with a capital Q.
Inside, the cabin has been tastefully upgraded and contains just about every item of standard equipment you could possibly want for, save for any genuinely exotic materials to look at or touch.
Outside and in, it feels quietly like a quality piece of engineering, one that will appeal to the sort of customer who wants the performance of anAudi S-Line or BMW M-Sport car but without the edge of brashness that these cars inevitably contain. And if you do the maths, says Volvo, you’ll end up paying around 10 per cent less than the established competition once the Polestar’s generous standard specification has been taken into account.
The V60 Polestar is good car then, one that probably over-delivers on its appealingly subtle Q-car good looks. And in a simpler sense it’s categorically NOT like anything else on sale from the establishment at the moment.

And in a tunnel it sounds absolutely fantastic. More of this in future please, Volvo.
