Il Gruppo Jaguar Land Rover ha avviato in Inghilterra la produzione dei quattro cilindri benzina della serie Ingenium. Queste unità derivano dallo stesso progetto modulare di alluminio che ha dato vita ai propulsori diesel attualmente in commercio e permetteranno al Gruppo di ridurre ulteriormente le emissioni dei propri veicoli. Rispetto alle attuali unità, i nuovi benzina offriranno consumi ridotti fino al 15%, a fronte di potenze superiori fino al 25%. Tra le caratteristiche tecniche salienti dei nuovi Ingenium a benzina spiccano la distribuzione elettroidraulica, il collettore di scarico integrato nella testata e il montaggio su cuscinetti ceramici della turbina twin-scroll. Per il momento non sono stati rilasciati i dati tecnici.

Il nuovo cambio automatico Transcend con motore elettrico integrato. Accanto ai propulsori, la Jaguar Land Rover sta sviluppando anche una nuova generazione di trasmissioni automatiche. Il progetto Transcend, per il quale sono già stati investiti 30 milioni di sterline, permetterà di ridurre fino al 10% i consumi combinando la tecnologia doppia frizione e la propulsione elettrica. Questa soluzione permetterà anche di fare a meno delle marce ridotte, pur garantendo le massime prestazioni in fuoristrada. Il sistema permetterà di guidare la vettura in modalità ibrida e in quella completamente elettrica, confermando di fatto l'arrivo di questa tecnologia sui prodotti di serie entro breve tempo.

Nel 2020 consumi ridotti del 25%. L'innovativo cambio otto marce, progettato per essere installato longitudinalmente, offrirà una maggiore spaziatura tra i rapporti e peserà circa 20 kg in meno rispetto alle unità attuali. L'unione fra la trasmissione Transcend e i motori Ingenium consentirà a partire dal 2020 di ridurre le emissioni di circa il 25% rispetto ai modelli attualmente in commercio. [\quote]

Innovative TRANSCEND transmission boosts off-road performance and reduces CO2

Coventry, UK: This week, Jaguar Land Rover will expand its powertrain family, unveiling new technologies for both current and future vehicles. The new additions will support the company’s long-term commitment to reduce vehicle emissions and improve fuel economy across its range through the introduction of more efficient engines along with alternative powertrains, lighter vehicles and improved vehicle energy conservation.

At the heart of its low-emissions strategy, the new four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine is now in production at Jaguar Land Rover’s £1 billion Engine Manufacturing Centre. Designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK, these are the most advanced engines the company has ever developed. They will deliver up to 25 per cent more power than the engines they replace and offer fuel consumption reductions of up to 15 per cent.

Looking to the future, Jaguar Land Rover has developed a revolutionary advanced automatic transmission that will both improve the efficiency of future vehicles and expand their all-wheel drive capability. The £30 million advanced research project, TRANSCEND, uses an innovative ultra-wide ratio spread (20) that integrates low-range gear box, dual-clutch and hybrid technologies to deliver new levels of off-road performance and fuel economy improvements of nearly 10%.

Nick Rogers, Executive Director - Product Engineering, said: “Environmental innovation is at the heart of our strategy to dramatically reduce emissions up to 2020 and beyond. With the Ingenium family of powertrains and advanced research projects such as TRANSCEND, future Jaguar Land Rover vehicles will emit significantly less CO₂. By 2020, new technologies will help us reduce our CO₂emissions by a further 25 per cent.”

Ingenium petrol engines

The Ingenium petrol engine features state-of-the-art technologies, such as an electrohydraulic valvetrain, integrated exhaust manifold and twin scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearing technology. They will deliver exceptional performance, efficiency and refinement while meeting the most stringent global emissions regulations.

Nick Rogers said: “Ingenium has been developed as a modular family of powerful, efficient and refined all-aluminum petrol and diesel engines. All Ingenium engines deliver benchmark low levels of friction, contributing to inherently good efficiency and refinement.”

Using a common architecture based on a 500cc per cylinder displacement delivers both maximum flexibility and scaleability. This enables a range of derivatives to be developed to suit applications as diverse as sports saloons and luxury SUVs.

Following the launch of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesels in 2015, these advanced petrol engines become the latest Ingenium engines to enter production and will be available from 2017.

TRANSCEND transmission

TRANSCEND is an advanced research project that combines innovative mechanical design and advanced manufacturing techniques to deliver a compact, lightweight eight-speed transmission with an ultra-wide ratio spread of 20, more than double that of a conventional eight-speed automatics. Weighing around 20kg less than existing eight-speed automatics, TRANSCEND could be used in longitudinal rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles.

Nick Rogers said: “TRANSCEND demonstrates Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to original research that improves the driving experience and the environmental performance of our vehicles. It will make manoeuvring and off-road use easier than ever before for drivers whilst also improving on-road vehicle dynamics and CO2 emissions.”

With part funding from the UK government, the TRANSCEND programme aims to rebuild the UK’s transmission production - through investment in processes to develop lighter components as well as more energy-efficient manufacturing production - and promote the export of British hybrid vehicle technologies.

Low emissions future

Jaguar Land Rover has made significant investments in new technology and environmental innovation in recent years. Its vision for reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency is to make improvements in powertrain, continue its leadership in vehicle light-weighting and improve vehicle energy conservation - all without compromise for its customers.

Since 2008, Jaguar Land Rover has doubled the number of powertrain engineers and invested in the research of a range of future powertrain solutions. This team is developing the technology that will help deliver a further 25 per cent improvement in CO2 emissions in the next five years.

Jaguar Land Rover is committed to introducing electrification and has confirmed its electric future with an entry for Jaguar in the innovative FIA Formula E Championship. This investment will push the boundaries of electrification technology and provides a real-world, fast-track test bed for future Jaguar Land Rover electrification technology, transferring it from track to road.

Il 2.0 benzina sarà disponibile in 3 livelli di potenza, secondo Autocar: 200, 250 e 300cv. Il prossimo motore sarà un 6 in linea 3 litri, seguito da un 1.5 3 cilindri, ovviamente tutti modulari.

La teoria è quando si conosce il funzionamento di qualcosa ma quel qualcosa non funziona.

La pratica è quando tutto funziona ma non si sa come.

Spesso si finisce con il coniugare la teoria con la pratica: non funziona niente e non si sa il perché.

Jaguar Land Rover will become the second customer after Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for German supplier Schaeffler's fuel-saving UniAir electrohydraulic variable valve lift system, industry sources have told Automotive News Europe.

Schaeffler's head of engine system development, Marin Scheidt, declined to confirm the new customer's name in an interview with Automotive News Europe, saying only that the second automaker to use the system is "in the luxury and sports car segment" and is not a German premium automaker. Multiple industry sources said the customer is Jaguar Land Rover, which declined to comment for this story.

 

CO2 challenge

Jaguar Land Rover needs more fuel-efficient cars to help the company meet tougher EU CO2 emissions limits that come into effect in 2020, as well as tighter fuel-economy targets planned in markets such as the United States and China. Failure to do so could result in government fines as well as hurt the automaker’s chances of competing against rivals such as BMW and Audi.

To reduce CO2 emissions Jaguar Land Rover is making its vehicles lighter through increased reliance on aluminum and by launching diesel-electric powertrains. The diesel-hybrid version of the new 335-hp Range Rover Sport emits 169 grams of CO2 compared with the 194g/km produced by the 254-hp diesel variant without electrification.

Because it sells between 10,000 and 300,000 vehicles a year in Europe, Jaguar Land Rover qualifies for an exemption that gives it a default target of a 45 percent CO2 reduction between 2007 and 2020. This means JLR must achieve average emissions of about 130g/km by 2020, according to Brussels-based green lobby group Transport & Environment.

 

Media reports suggest that if Jaguar Land Rover fails to reduce CO2 enough it might have to consider an alliance with another automaker that has a large fleet of small, low-CO2 cars to avoid fines.

Schaeffler’s technology improves engine efficiency and reduces CO2 by optimizing the fresh air charge entering the combustion chamber. Initially arising from Fiat research, the system is currently used by Fiat Chrysler in Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat models with engine sizes ranging from 0.9 liter to 2.4 liter. Since production began in 2009, 400,000 Fiat Group engines have been equipped with this technology, which won two PACE Awards in 2012 from Automotive News Europe sister publication Automotive News. The annual PACE Awards recognize innovation and technological advancement.

Despite the accomplishments, Scheidt admitted: “It’s not easy to convince customers about the advantages” of Schaeffler’s entire UniAir system. He said many automakers, however, are open to purchasing pieces of the system for their powertrains. For instance, Schaeffler supplies key components for BMW’s Valvetronic and Audi’s AVS.

Schaeffler Chief Technology Officer Peter Gutzmer last summer told Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche that UniAir works best “if we network intensively very early on with the customer, starting during the specification phase, clarifying who will cover particular areas and who will take over particular work packages.”

 

Further development

 

That has not stopped Schaeffler engineers from further developing the UniAir system, experimenting, for example, with variable compression achieved solely by controlling the intake valves. In a joint project with Continental, the tweaked system reduced knocking at medium throttle and cut fuel consumption by about 4.4 percent. A similar reduction was achieved at full throttle, Schaeffler said.

At a company gathering last month, Schaeffler also revealed a new potential application for UniAir: a three-cylinder engine that shuts down each cylinder on a rotating, alternating basis at low throttle. The process is claimed to achieve 4 percent fuel savings from a cold start while also providing vibration-control benefits.

Interessante, anche perchè questo motore è un bialbero e sembra abbia un variatore di fase anche lato scarico a differenza dei Mair Fiat. Penso che comunque il sistema sarà simile ma non lo stesso modulo identico al Mair Fiat.

Ma Transcend è solo per benzina 4/6 cilindri longitudinali ( quindi rimpiazzerebbe ZF 8HP )?

Curiosa come scelta, soprattutto perché continuano a dover essere ben alleati con ZF, che fornisce loro il 9 marce per diesel trasversali ...

Significa che Schaeffler, ovvero quella ditta tedesca di componentistica automotive che materialmente costruisce i moduli uniair per FCA, ora fornirà anche a Jaguar Land Rover.

The latest generation of UniAir technology is also demonstrating its potential. In this specific case - a newly-developed four-cylinder gasoline engine series - the UniAir system is combined for the first time with two hydraulic camshaft phasing units in accordance with customer-specific requirements. The additional degree of freedom offered by the system with its optimized mass design means that the engine can operate in an even broader spectrum of the data map with optimum efficiency. This means, for example, that the engine can be switched off in start-stop operation and can be started again at lightening speed keeping vibrations in both instances to a minimum. Another advantage of the technology is the fast and precise control of the valves to match the relevant cycle. This allows an instant increase in torque without impairing the efficiency of the engine due to the significant retardation of the ignition timing.

Ron Lee, Powertrain Director in the Development department at Jaguar explains that “with the Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium gasoline engine, we have successfully completed the first stage on the way back to producing our engines in-house. The close collaboration with Schaeffler has made a significant contribution here.
