New engines, new chassis, innovative control concept and more connectivity: Porsche is introducing the third generation of the Cayenne.

 

Porsche held a spectacular event on Tuesday in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen to unveil the new Cayenne. The third generation of the successful model, more than 760,000 units of which have been sold since 2002, is a completely new development. The vehicle will combine even more of the typical Porsche performance with excellent everyday practicality. Despite its extended standard equipment, the Cayenne is up to 65 kilograms lighter thanks to its intelligent lightweight construction. At launch, two turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engines will be available, with 250 kW (340 hp; Fuel consumption combined 9.2–9.0 l/100 km; CO₂-emissions 209–205 g/km) in the Cayenne and 324 kW (440 hp; Fuel consumption combined 9.4–9.2 l/100 km; CO₂-emissions 213–209 g/km) in the Cayenne S.

“We have completely redeveloped our successful model. It has been visibly and tangibly improved and perfected in all respects. The Cayenne has also been digitalised and networked throughout to give it a forward-thinking design”, says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche AG.

More Porsche, more Cayenne

Porsche has also enhanced the look of the Cayenne significantly: “Our primary objective was to accentuate the character of the vehicle. More Porsche, more Cayenne. The new Cayenne is more precise, elegant, athletic and expressive”, says Michael Mauer, Director of Style at Porsche AG, who unveiled the style of the new Cayenne alongside Peter Varga (Director Exterior Design) and Ivo van Hulten (Director Interior Design).

The first appearance of the new Cayenne at the Porsche Museum was accompanied by “Sinfonie des Lebens” (Symphony of Life), a piece composed by Jesse Milliner and performed by the Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague and the wind ensemble from the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, a partner of Porsche. The symphony was complemented by dancers, live musicians and an elaborate light show.

Cayenne and Cayenne S market launch

The new Porsche SUV is launching in two variants: The Cayenne with a six-cylinder turbo engine and displacement of three litres delivers 250 kW (340 hp), developing a torque of 450 Nm. That means that even the standard model achieves outstanding driving performance: It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds (5.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package). The maximum speed is 245 km/h. The second model to launch is the Cayenne S. It is driven by a 2.9-litre V6 engine with twin turbocharging. This engine, which has also been newly developed, delivers 324 kW (440 hp), achieving a torque of 550 Nm – 15 kW (20 hp) more than its predecessor. Accordingly, the vehicle accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds (with Sport Chrono Package: 4.9 seconds). The maximum speed is 265 km/h.

The new Cayenne

 

The Cayenne is based heavily on the iconic 911 sports car: The third edition of the SUV, which has also been enhanced visually, now has mixed tyres and rear-axle steering for the first time. In addition to these typical sports car features, the on-road capabilities are further improved by active all-wheel drive as standard, Porsche 4D Chassis Control, three-chamber air suspension and the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electronic roll stabilisation system. Despite its significantly extended standard equipment, the Cayenne weighs up to 65 kilograms less than its predecessor and remains perfectly suited to off-road use.

Faster on the road, even more impressive on rough terrain: Tiptronic S and PTM

The Cayenne’s expanded performance range, improving both sportiness and comfort, is due in no small part to the new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox. Shorter response times and sportier ratios in the lower gears enhance both on-road performance and off-road capability. At the other end of the expanded spread between comfort and sportiness, the long-transmission eighth gear ensures low torques, optimised fuel consumption and relaxed driving.

The new Cayenne offers even more potential when it comes to sporty performance. Porsche has redeveloped the Sport Chrono Package based on the model of the sports car. The Mode button on the steering wheel is one clear indicator of this approach. As well as the Normal, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes, the driver can select an individually configurable mode. Pressing the Sport Response button in the centre activates the engine and transmission maps, which are calibrated for maximum performance. The Sport Chrono Package also includes a separate PSM Sport mode, in which the driver can utilise the new Cayenne’s full driving dynamics.

Reduced weight - lower fuel consumption - even more driving pleasure

Sports cars need a lightweight construction. Following the 911 and the Panamera, the new body of the Cayenne also uses an intelligent combination of alloy and steel. The exterior is made entirely of aluminium. The floorpan assembly, front section and virtually all the chassis components are also manufactured from alloy.

One particular technical highlight is the innovative lithium-ion polymer starter battery, which alone accounts for a weight saving of 10 kg over the predecessor model. In total, the weight of the Cayenne when empty has been reduced from 2,040 to 1,985 kilograms – even in spite of the significantly extended standard equipment, which now includes LED main headlights, larger wheels, ParkAssist (front and rear), an LTE telephone module including a WiFi hotspot, Porsche Connect services and anticipatory pedestrian protection.

Porsche is offering a new three-stage lighting concept for the headlights: Every Cayenne is fitted with LED headlights as standard. In the next upgrade, the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) can be selected as an option, offering a variety of light modes such as cornering light and motorway light.

The four-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 404 kW (550 hp; Fuel consumption combined 11.9–11.7 l/100 km; CO2-emissions 272–267 g/km). The increased driving dynamics are based on the combination of innovative technologies, such as active aerodynamics including roof spoiler, controlled three-chamber air suspension, mixed tyres and the new high-performance brake. With additional options, such as rear-axle steering or electric roll stabilisation with a 48-volt system, the SUV can even achieve the driving characteristics of a true sports car. The new Cayenne Turbo accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package) and reaches a top speed of 286 km/h.

Even sharper design

With an exclusive front end and the LED main headlights of the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), the Cayenne Turbo has an appearance that is both dominant and independent. At night, the new Turbo sets itself apart from other Cayenne models with its double-row front light modules. The side view is characterised by standard 21-inch Turbo wheels specially reserved for the top model, in widened wheel arches with painted wheel arch trims. The twin tailpipes, specific to the Turbo, are the key distinguishing features on the rear end. The door trims and rear apron are painted in the exterior colour. The completely new interior demonstrates the increased spread of the Cayenne Turbo: more sportiness and more comfort at the same time. Virtually all the vehicle functions of the fully networked SUV can be displayed and operated using the high-resolution display and touchscreen of the Porsche Advanced Cockpit. Among them, for example, is the BOSE® Surround Sound System with 710 watts, fitted as standard. Drivers and passengers experience this top-of-the-range model in sports seats with 18-way adjustment. The integrated headrests are a new feature and are also reminiscent of the 911. All seats and the multifunction sports steering wheel in an exclusive Turbo design are heated as standard.

Greater power, greater torque: biturbo eight-cylinder with 550 hp

At the heart of the Cayenne Turbo is the new four-litre V8 engine with twin turbocharging. With an output of 404 kW (550 hp), it exceeds the engine of its predecessor by 22 kW (30 hp), while the maximum torque of 770 Nm represents an increase of 20 Nm. The new eight-speed Tiptronic S converts both into acceleration and speed by means of the active all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The new Turbo sprints to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package) and reaches a top speed of 286 km/h. As is characteristic for new engine generations, the exhaust turbochargers are arranged inside the cylinder V, in the “central turbo layout”. The shortened exhaust paths between the combustion chambers and the turbochargers mean that the engine is especially responsive, while the central turbo layout results in significantly improved power delivery. Another advantage is the compact construction of the engine. This enables a lower installation position, which has a positive effect on the driving dynamics: The centre of gravity is lower and the cornering precision is higher.

Active chassis with three-chamber air suspension and mixed tyres

The new lightweight chassis of the Cayenne Turbo combines the best of three worlds: the precision of a sports car, the comfort of a saloon and the adaptability of an off-road vehicle. In particular, the combination of the new three-chamber air suspension with the active shock-absorber system PASM extends the range considerably. The concept of the new mixed tyres with standard dimensions of 285/40 at the front and 315/35 at the rear comes from sports car construction and produces even better longitudinal and lateral power transmission. Three air chambers per spring strut are used in the adaptive air suspension design, therefore the chassis is able to map different spring rates. With six selectable height levels, the ground clearance can be manually adjusted to suit the offroad terrain. They are also actively controlled via five new driving programmes for road journeys and off-road journeys. Complemented by optional rear-axle steering, the electric Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilisation connected to a 48-volt vehicle electrical system and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+), the new Cayenne Turbo achieves the driving dynamics of a sports car. At the same time, its everyday suitability in terms of parking and turning manoeuvres is improved, as is the comfort level.

First SUV with adaptive roof spoiler and new high-performance brake

The new Cayenne Turbo is the first SUV to have an adaptive roof spoiler as a component of its active aerodynamics. Depending on the position, this optimises efficiency, increases downforce on the rear axle and, in the airbrake position, shortens the braking distance from higher speeds. At full braking from 250 km/h, the SUV comes to a stop up to two metres earlier as a result. The aerodynamic system therefore complements the effect of the new high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) which takes care of deceleration in the Cayenne Turbo as standard. The tungsten carbide layer applied to the steel discs increases braking performance and resistance to wear while reducing the amount of brake dust at the same time, meaning less dirt on the rims. The top system in the programme remains the optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).

The new Cayenne Turbo is available to order now, with the market launch in Europe scheduled for the end of 2017. In Germany, the top model of the SUV model line costs EUR 138,850 including VAT and country-specific features.

A three-litre V6 engine (250 kW/340 hp) combines with an electric engine (100 kW/136 hp) to generate system power of 340 kW (462 hp; Fuel consumption combined 3.4 – 3.2 l/100 km; CO2emissions 78 – 72 g/km; energy consumption: 20.9 – 20.6 kWh/100 km). The maximum torque of 700 Nm is already available just above idling speed; the boost strategy matches that of the 918 Spyder supercar. The Cayenne’s plug-in hybrid drive enables acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 5.0 seconds and a maximum speed of 253 kilometres per hour. The new Cayenne E-Hybrid can drive up to a distance of 441) kilometres and speed of 135 kilometres per hour on electricity alone. The average consumption in the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), depending on the set of tyres used, is 3.4 – 3.2 l/100 km of fuel and 20.9 – 20.6 kWh/100 km of electricity. Alongside the launch of the Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche is expanding its range of comfort and assistance systems for the entire Cayenne series with additional options such as the new head-up display, massage seats and 22-inch light metal wheels.

462 horsepower system power with 918 Spyder boost concept

The next stage in Porsche’s journey towards e-mobility is the Cayenne E-Hybrid. While the performance of the combustion engine moderately improves on its predecessor by five kW (Seven hp) to 250 kW (340 hp), the performance of the electric engine is now over 43 per cent higher at 100 kW (136 hp). Both combine for a total system power of 340 kW (462 hp). The boost strategy derived from the 918 Spyder supercar is a new addition. It ensures that the electric engine can be used in all the standard Sport Chrono Package’s driving modes for an additional performance boost. This means the maximum system torque becomes available as you press the accelerator pedal. Depending on the driving situation and performance requirements, drivers can continue to draw on the boost torque across the entire range of speeds. This leads to a more agile and superior driving experience.

The extent of the boost support and battery charging during the journey depend on the driving mode. In the performance-focused Sport and Sport Plus modes, virtually all of the battery's energy can be used for a boost. In Sport mode, the battery is charged just as much as is required for a new boost. In Sport Plus mode, the battery is recharged as quickly as possible. The other modes support maximum driving efficiency.

Charging with the Porsche Connect app and Porsche Charging Service

Battery capacity has improved significantly in the Cayenne E-Hybrid, along with the distance on electricity and the boost reserves: in comparison to the previous model, capacity increased from 10.8 to 14.1 kWh. This is an increase of around 30 per cent. The fluid-cooled battery, stored beneath the loading floor in the rear of the car, consists of eight cell modules with 13 prismatic lithium ion cells each. Within 7.8 hours, the high-voltage battery is charged fully via a 230 volt connection with ten amps. if the optional 7.2 kilowatt on-board charger and a 230 volt connection with 32 amps are used as an alternative to the standard 3.6 kilowatt charger, the battery is ‘filled up’ again after only 2.3 hours.

The charging process can be managed and monitored via Porsche Communication Management (PCM) and remotely using the Porsche Connect app. The independent climate control, i.e. heating and air conditioning when the ignition is switched off, is available as standard and can also be individually controlled via smartphone. Porsche Connect can also be used to find and filter charging stations and set them as a navigation destination. The new Porsche Charging Service allows cross-provider access to public charging stations – without requiring additional registration with the relevant provider. This is billed directly via the Porsche ID account.

New hybrid module and rapid switching Tiptronic S

Porsche has redesigned the Cayenne E-Hybrid’s drive train. The hybrid module consists of a highly-integrated combination of electric engine and separating clutch. In contrast to the previous electro-hydraulic system with the spindle actuator, the separating clutch is operated electromechanically, which ensures even faster reaction times. The transmission acquires the new Tiptronic S, newly developed for the entire Cayenne range with eight speeds. The automatic gearbox not only offers even more comfortable and smoother starting but also significantly speeds up switching. Interruption of tractive force during switching processes has also been reduced further.

Active hang-on all-wheel drive and 3.5 ton trailer load

With Porsche Traction Management (PTM), the Cayenne E-Hybrid has an active hang-on all-wheel drive with an electronically regulated, map-controlled multiplate clutch. With its broad range of torque distribution, the system offers clear benefits in terms of driving dynamics, agility, traction control and offroad capabilities. Thanks to the brand new chassis, Cayenne E-Hybrid offers the same sports car driving dynamics as all models of the new Cayenne generation. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is available as standard. Optional features include the electric Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilisation system and a trailer connection for loads up to 3.5 tonnes.

 

New options: head-up display and 22-inch light metal wheels

With the launch of the Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche is expanding its range of assistance systems and optional features for the entire series with a variety of innovations. For the first time, head-up display is available in a Porsche. It projects all the relevant driving information directly into the driver’s line of vision in a full-colour display. Other new features now available in the Cayenne are the smart digital copilot Porsche InnoDrive with adaptive cruise control, massage seats, a heated windscreen, independent heating with remote operation and 22-inch light metal wheels.

The maximum system torque of 900 Nm is available from just above idle. Both models accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 295 km/h. This exceptional performance is matched by a high level of efficiency: the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé can drive for up to 40 kilometres with zero local emissions. The average NEDC consumption is 3.9–3.7 l/100 km (fuel) and 19.6–18.7 kWh/100 km (electric).

In addition to the two top models, the hybrid range from Porsche now includes the new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé with system power of 340 kW (462 PS; Fuel consumption combined 3.2–3.1 l/100 km, electricity consumption 18.7–17.7 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 75–72 g/km), torque of 700 Nm, and electric range of up to 43 kilometres. The Cayenne E-Hybrid, which now features a gasoline particulate filter, is available to order again.

Speeds of up to 135 km/h with just electric power

Like all Porsche plug-in hybrids, the new top-of-the-range model in the Cayenne family is also one of the sportiest vehicles in the premium segment – not in spite of its hybrid powertrain but because of it. In the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid models, the electric motor is located between the V8 engine and the eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission. The two motors are interconnected via a separating clutch inside the hybrid module, referred to as the Electric Clutch Actuator (ECA). In E-Power driving mode, the electric motor can, on its own, propel the vehicle up to a maximum speed of 135 km/h. It can also be used in the other modes for an additional power boost. These modes can be selected via the standard Sport Chrono Package (Hybrid Auto, Sport and Sport Plus). Porsche has taken this boost strategy from the 918 Spyder super sports car.

 

The lithium-ion battery is installed underneath the loadspace floor and has a capacity of 14.1 kWh. The high-voltage battery can be fully charged within 2.4 hours with the standard 7.2 kW onboard AC charger when using a 400-volt connection with a 16-amp fuse. The charging process takes six hours from a conventional domestic socket with a rating of 230 volts and 10 amps. Charging can also be scheduled via Porsche Communication Management (PCM) or the Porsche Connect app (for smartphones and Apple® Watch).

Roll stabilisation system, air suspension, and ceramic brakes as standard

The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé come with extensive factory-fitted equipment as standard: features include the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electric roll stabilisation system, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) rear-axle differential lock, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) high-performance brake system, 21-inch lightweight alloy wheels in Aero design including wheel arch extensions in body colour, Power Steering Plus, and the Sport Chrono Package. The adaptive three-chamber air suspension, including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), ensures a broad spectrum of typical Porsche driving dynamics and a comfortable ride. Up to 22-inch lightweight alloy wheels and rear-axle steering are also available as optional extras.

 

Full connectivity and auxiliary air conditioning as standard

All Cayenne models include full connectivity as standard. This enables online navigation with real-time traffic information, smart online voice control, and extensive Porsche Connect services – including searching for public charging stations. Additional options for all Cayenne derivatives when the new model year starts include wireless Apple CarPlay®, new USB-C ports and a smartphone storage tray with inductive charging function. All hybrid models from Porsche have auxiliary air conditioning as standard. This can be remote-controlled directly via the PCM and via the Porsche Connect app, and enables the vehicle to be heated and cooled even when the ignition is not switched on.

 

All Cayenne models feature LED headlights, a cruise control system with speed limiter function, camera-based pedestrian protection and Park Assist at the front and rear – including a rear-view camera system in the Cayenne Coupé. Optional extras include LED matrix beam headlights, a head-up display, Night Vision with thermal imaging camera, and the Porsche InnoDrive digital co-pilot including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, road sign recognition, active lane guidance, junction assistant and emergency braking.

A double debut: Cayenne Coupé as a V6 and V8 hybrid

With the Cayenne Coupé, Porsche has added an even sportier variant to its successful SUV line-up. Highlights of the coupé include sharper lines with a unique roof and rear section, an adaptive rear spoiler, a rear seat bench with the characteristics of two individual seats, and two different roof designs: a panoramic fixed glass roof as standard and an optional carbon roof. Like the SUV, the SUV coupé is now available in two different hybrid versions: in combination with the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo engine. The new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé has a system output of 340 kW (462 PS) and a system torque of 700 Nm. In conjunction with the standard Sport Chrono Package, it sprints from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds
(5.0 seconds with the lightweight sports packages) and has a top speed of 253 km/h. The average consumption according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is 3.2–3.1 l/100 km (fuel) and 18.7 – 17.7 kWh/100 km (electric). The purely electric range is up to 43 kilometres.

All four different hybrid versions of the Cayenne are now available to order.

The interplay of the systems significantly increases the performance, driving safety, and comfort of the new Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid. Porsche Traction Management (PTM) adaptively controls the distribution of drive power between the front and rear axles according to the driving situation. The three-chamber air suspension can map various spring rates with a very wide spread, depending on whether you’re looking for greater comfort or a sportier driving mode. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) continuously regulates the force of the shock absorbers for each wheel, based on road conditions and driving mode. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) ensures that the SUV remains horizontal up to a lateral acceleration of 0.8 g when cornering. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) supports steering with targeted braking interventions and provides improved traction when accelerating out of corners, thanks to its fully variable transverse lock. And Porsche 4D Chassis Control connects all of the chassis systems to one another and continuously calculates the optimum driving status information.

The twenty-one-inch wheels, which are standard equipment, support a dynamic driving style. The factory-fitted Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) ensures top braking performance for the most exacting requirements. One useful investment for even more agility and stability is the optional rear-axle steering. Not only does it reduce the turning circle from 12.1 to 11.5 meters by steering three degrees, it also steers the rear wheels up to 80 kmh in the opposite direction from the front axle for greater maneuverability and precision. When driving fast straight ahead, the rear-axle steering has a stabilizing effect, steering parallel to the front wheels up to the final speed, for example, when changing lanes on the freeway. The Cayenne’s front axle therefore doesn’t have to pull the rear axle around—it actively shapes the directional movement. As a result, the Cayenne is able to implement its high system power by combining combustion engine and electric motor safely and efficiently. And what’s the result of all this engineering? In a nutshell, Karl Heeß says, “When you drive the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, you think you're sitting in a classic sports car.”

Gli interni della Panamera sono decisamente meglio, col tablet decisamente meglio integrato a mio avviso.
