Ford hires head of Apple's car project

Doug Field returns to automaker after stints at Apple and Tesla

Ford Motor is hiring the head of Apple’s car project away from the iPhone maker.

The automaker said Tuesday that has recruited Doug Field, who has been a vice president in Apple’s special projects group.

Field joins Ford as chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer, reporting to CEO Jim Farley.

Field was a top engineer at Tesla between two stints at Apple and played a major role launching the Model 3 sedan.

The hire is a coup for Ford, which has made major strides under Farley in convincing investors it can compete with Tesla and others on electric vehicles and technology.

Ford shares have almost doubled since Farley took over in October, after his two predecessors presided over a years-long slump.

Losing Field is a blow to Apple, whose car project has gone through several strategy and leadership shake-ups since it started to take shape around 2014. Field joined in 2018 and is at least the fourth member of the car group’s management team who has left since February.

Apple has become the world’s most valuable company, with an almost $2.6 trillion market capitalization, by selling smartphones, tablets, personal computers and services. Investors and customers have been clamoring for new device categories, and speculation about the car project was rampant early this year.

Some Apple engineers on the project believe the company could release a product in five to seven years if the company decides to go ahead with one, people with knowledge of the efforts said in January. Discussions with some major automakers, including Hyundai, have stalled, Bloomberg reported in March.

Field began his career as an engineer at Ford.

Ford hires Audi executive to lead Europe passenger cars business

Martin Sander was previously the premium brand's head of sales for Europe

Ford of Europe has hired long-time Audi sales executive Martin Sander to oversee its passenger cars division.

Sander, 54, will take over from Roelant de Waard, who retired at the end of last year, Ford said in a statement on Monday.

Sander, who was previously Audi's head of sales for Europe, will start his new role on June 1. He will report to Stuart Rowley, Ford of Europe president.

Sander will be based in Cologne, Germany, where Ford will build its first full-electric vehicle, which is based on Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, starting in 2023.

Sander, who has a degree in mechanical engineering, joined Audi in 1995 as a project sales manager in Germany.

His roles at the German premium brand included director of sales for northern Europe, Audi Canada CEO, head of Audi UK and head sales in the Americas, including the U.S.

Sander's assignments combine two senior leadership positions.

DETROIT — Ford Motor on Wednesday said it's separating its internal combustion and electric vehicle businesses with a goal of increasing profit margins and getting engineers, designers and developers more focused on the unique needs of each powertrain.

EVs — which the automaker now expects to account for 30 percent of its global sales within five years and half by 2030 — will be part of a unit called Ford Model e, while the combustion unit will be called Ford Blue. The two units, along with the recently created Ford Pro commercial unit, will collaborate in some areas but largely operate independently.

"We are literally splitting the business in half," CEO Jim Farley told Automotive News.

With the new structure, Ford said it aims to achieve a 10 percent total company adjusted pretax earnings margin by 2026, which is nearly double the 5.4 percent it posted for 2021. It also plans to produce more than 2 million EVs by 2026.

Ford also said it's planning big changes for its dealer body: The automaker wants a certain number of retailers to "opt-in" to selling EVs under a new set of standards that will include carrying no inventory, selling at nonnegotiable prices and being held to fewer facility requirements.

Farley, who declined to say how many dealers he wants to participate in the electric retail model, said Ford plans to discuss the upcoming changes with dealers over the next two months before finalizing the standards.

The automaker is shuffling some executive roles.

Farley will be president of Model e in addition to CEO, while Kumar Galhotra, president of the Americas and international markets group, will become president of Ford Blue.

"This new structure will enhance our capacity to generate industry-leading growth, profitability and liquidity in this new era of transportation," Ford CFO John Lawler said in a statement. "It will sharpen our effectiveness in allocating capital to both the ICE and EV businesses and the returns we expect from them — by making the most of existing capabilities, adding new skills wherever they are needed, simplifying processes and lowering costs. Most importantly, we believe it will deliver growth and significant value for our stakeholders."

Ford plans to report earnings for its EV, combustion and commercial units separately starting next year.

ICE, EV differences

Farley, in an interview, said the approach is unique in that most other automakers producing EV and gasoline-powered vehicles have similar teams working on both.

"We are not going to go to ICE people and say, 'Go do a deal on lithium raw material,' " he said. "We are not going to ask our designers to design the next Lincoln EV and then the Super Duty at the same time. Most OEMs including us, until [today], have been asking our teams to do both."

To underscore the different needs and expertise of the teams, Farley recalled the product development team for the F-150 Lightning, made up of veterans of its gasoline pickups, originally projecting that Ford would need to produce just 20,000 Lightnings a year. It's now working to create capacity to build 150,000 annually, even before sales have started.

Although product development, supply chain and customer experience teams will be separated between the combustion and EV units, Farley said the two units will collaborate and complement each other in a handful of areas. At the Blue Oval City assembly plant being built in Tennessee, Ford Blue will handle body engineering and manufacturing operations, Farley said, while Model e will design the plant itself and source its advanced electrical architectures.

Model e also will handle upcoming digital services, software and over-the-air update experiences, although such services will be available in gasoline vehicles as well.

Farley said Ford is not spinning off its combustion or EV businesses into separate companies because doing so would require greater access to capital markets and make them less likely to work together.

The company also hopes to avoid the notion that it soon plans to wind down its gas-powered products.

"We still think that more than half our customers are going to be ICE, and they're going to be ICE for a long time," Farley said. "It's almost like our industry's kind of given up on that business. Even if the unit volume starts to fall over when mass adoption of electrification happens, in a lot of segments that's not going to happen, and we want to have a dedicated team to run that business with passion."

Galhotra said in a statement that Ford Blue plans to "unleash the full potential" of nameplates such Bronco and Maverick and the Raptor performance variant.

"We will pair these great products with a simple, connected and convenient customer experience that earns higher loyalty," Galhotra said. "We are going to be hyper-competitive on costs and make quality a reason to choose Ford. And by doing all that, Ford Blue will be an engine of cash and profitability for the whole company."

New executive roles

A number of executives will be taking on new responsibilities, effective immediately.

Doug Field, whom Ford hired from Apple last fall and is currently chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer, will lead product creation for Model e as chief EV and digital systems officer. Field also will lead development of software and embedded systems for all of Ford.

"Designing truly incredible electric and software-driven vehicles – with experiences customers cannot even imagine yet — requires a clean-sheet approach," Field said in a statement. "We are creating an organization that benefits from all of Ford's know-how and capabilities, but that can move with speed and unconstrained ambition to create revolutionary new products."

Lisa Drake, Ford's North America COO, will become vice president of EV industrialization for Model e.

Marin Gjaja will be Model e's chief customer officer, heading the unit's go-to-market, customer experience and new business initiatives.

Ford of Europe President Stuart Rowley will become the company's chief transformation and quality officer. Ford said he will "establish quality as a reason to choose a Ford and lead Ford's drive to improved efficiency, reduced complexity and a lean, fully competitive cost structure across the enterprise."

Hau Thai-Tang, chief product platform and operations officer, will become chief industrial platform officer. Ford says he will lead product development, supply chain and manufacturing engineering for combustion products and common systems across Ford Blue, Model e, Ford Pro and the Ford Drive mobility unit.

COLOGNE, Germany, March 14, 2022 – Ford today announced significant strides toward an all-electric future in Europe, which will see the company transformed and offering a new generation of seven, all-electric, fully-connected passenger vehicles and vans by 2024.

Today’s announcement builds on the recent news that the company has created a new global business unit – Ford Model e – focused on the design, production, and distribution of electric and connected vehicles. Together with Ford Pro, the business unit focused on Ford’s commercial vehicle business, these two business units will define Ford’s future in Europe.

“I am delighted to see the pace of change in Europe – challenging our entire industry to build better, cleaner and more digital vehicles. Ford is all-in and moving fast to meet the demand in Europe and around the globe,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO.

“This is why we have created Ford Model e – allowing us to move at the speed of a start-up to build electric vehicles that delight and offer connected services unique to Ford and that are built with Ford-grade engineering and safety.”

With its extended range of electric passenger and commercial vehicle models, Ford expects its annual sales of electric vehicles in Europe to exceed 600,000 units in 2026, and also reaffirmed its intention to deliver a 6 percent EBIT margin in Europe in 2023. The acceleration in Europe supports Ford’s goal to sell more than 2 million EVs globally by 2026 and deliver company adjusted EBIT margin of 10 percent.

“Our march toward an all-electric future is an absolute necessity for Ford to meet the mobility needs of customers across a transforming Europe,” said Stuart Rowley, chair, Ford of Europe. “It’s also about the pressing need for greater care of our planet, making a positive contribution to society and reducing emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.”

Together, these efforts will support Ford’s global plans to significantly reduce carbon emissions. The company today announced it is targeting zero emissions for all vehicle sales in Europe and carbon neutrality across its European footprint of facilities, logistics and suppliers by 2035.

Seven new electric vehicles by 2024

Following the successful European introduction of the all-electric Mach-E in 2021 and Mach-E GT this year, plus the launch of the E-Transit in the next quarter, Ford today unveiled plans for seven
all-electric vehicles to join the Ford family in Europe – three new passenger vehicles and four new commercial vehicles.

Starting in 2023, Ford will begin production of an all-new electric passenger vehicle, a medium-sized crossover, built in Cologne with a second electric vehicle added to the Cologne production line-up in 2024. In addition, Ford’s top-selling passenger vehicle in Europe, the Ford Puma, will be available as an electric version made in Craiova, Romania, starting in 2024.

Reaffirming its leadership as Europe’s top-selling commercial vehicle brand, Ford’s iconic Transit range will include four new electric models – the all-new Transit Custom one-tonne van and Tourneo Custom multi-purpose vehicle in 2023, and the smaller, next generation Transit Courier van and Tourneo Courier multi-purpose vehicle in 2024.

“These new Ford electric vehicles signal what is nothing less than the total transformation of our brand in Europe – a new generation of zero-emission vehicles, optimized for a connected world, offering our customers truly outstanding user experiences,” said Rowley.

EV production and investment in Cologne

Ford confirmed today that the first volume all-electric passenger vehicle to come out of the Ford Cologne Electrification Centre will be a five-seat, medium-sized crossover. In 2021, sports utilities and crossovers accounted for 58 percent of all Ford passenger vehicle sold in the continent, up nearly 20 percentage points from 2020.

The all-electric crossover breaks new boundaries for Ford. Capable of a 500km driving range on a single charge, the vehicle and its name will be revealed later in 2022, with production commencing in 2023.

Today’s confirmation that a second, all-electric passenger vehicle – a sports crossover – will be built at the Ford Cologne Electrification Centre means that electric vehicle production at the facility will increase to 1.2 million vehicles over a six-year timeframe. Investment in the new electric passenger vehicles to be built in Cologne is expected to be $2 billion. The investment includes a new battery assembly facility scheduled to start operations in 2024.

New joint venture aims to increase battery production in Europe

To support Ford’s ambitious vehicle electrification plans, Ford, SK On Co., Ltd. and Koç Holding have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding for a new, industry-leading joint venture business in Turkey. Subject to execution of a final agreement, the three partners plan to create one of the largest EV battery facilities in the European wider region.

The joint venture would be located near Ankara and will manufacture high Nickel NMC cells for assembly into battery array modules. Production is intended to start as early as mid-decade with an annual capacity likely to be in the range of 30 to 45 Gigawatt hours.

The investment the three partners are planning in the battery joint venture – including support from the Turkish Government – will directly benefit large and small commercial vehicle operators across Europe, reducing energy and running costs and providing a significant contribution to CO2 reduction.

Boosting EV manufacturing capacity in Craiova

Ford’s manufacturing plant in Craiova, Romania, will play a significant role in the company’s electric and commercial vehicle growth plans in Europe.

From 2024, European customers will be able to purchase an all-electric version of the Ford Puma, Ford’s popular compact crossover. The Puma was Ford’s best-selling passenger vehicle in Europe in 2021, and the all-electric Puma will bring this successful new nameplate to an even wider group of European customers when it goes into production in Craiova in 2024.

Additionally, the all-new Transit Courier, the popular light commercial vehicle, and Tourneo Courier, a compact multi-purpose vehicle, will also be produced in Craiova from 2023, with all-electric versions coming in 2024.

To further boost electric and commercial vehicle capacity, Ford announced this morning that Ford Otosan will assume ownership of the Craiova plant and manufacturing business, subject to regulatory approval and consultation. Ford Otosan, a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Koç Holding, is one of the longest running and most successful joint ventures in the global auto industry.

“We welcome this opportunity to grow our joint venture with Koc Holding and leverage this strategic partnership to better utilize our resources and know-how in Romania,” Rowley said. “Ford Craiova is today a strong success story, and we believe that through Ford Otosan's experience and expertise in electrification and commercial vehicles it can reach even higher levels of achievement.”
