Chip crisis hits Stellantis' Italy output more than COVID, union says

Labor boss says 2021 production will not match the 461,000 units built last year

MILAN -- The impact from a global semiconductor shortage on Stellantis' Italian production this year will be worse and longer-lasting than the damage to output caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Italy's FIM-CISL union said.

A global microchip shortage is pushing automakers to slow down production, with Stellantis halting operations at several facilities across Europe and the United States. The automaker forecast it would make 1.4 million fewer vehicles this year.

"The semiconductor hurricane is causing production stoppages that are weighing more than the lockdown in 2020," FIM-CISL head Ferdinando Uliano said on Friday. "The forecasts are that such a situation will carry on for the whole first half of 2022."

FIM-CISL said Stellantis had produced 319,000 cars in Italy in the first nine months of this year, 11 percent more than in the same period of 2020, when operations where frozen for several weeks following the COVID-19 outbreak.

The production losses significantly worsened in the third quarter, according to Automotive News Europe calculations using FIM-CISL figures.

Production at FCA's six Italian car plants in the third quarter was down 46 percent on the same quarter of 2020 and production at the Sevel van plant was down 33 percent.

The worst-hit factory was Pomigliano, where the Panda minicar is built. Production was down 65 percent in the third quarter, with just 15 production days worked out of 50.

Uliano said 2021 full-year production would hardly match the 461,000 units produced last year.

"It's practically impossible, the chip situation is getting more serious and we will have further heavy closures," he said, adding a similar situation was expected with van production at the Sevel plant.

Stellantis, formed earlier this year through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group, will operate the Melfi plant, its largest Italian facility, for an equivalent of only six days in October.

Production stoppages will also hit component plants, Uliano said The Mirafiori Meccaniche gearbox plant will stop the six-speed manual gearbox production for the whole of October.

On the other hand, Turin's Mirafiori, where the New 500 small electric car is produced, is among the few plants which have not suffered major stoppages.

"Production of the BEV 500 must go on to meet targets on carbon emissions reduction," Uliano said. In the first eight months 38,187 New 500 models were produced, he said.

"The main risk is that Stellantis decides to delay planned investments and new model launches, as the chip crisis pushes sales down," Uliano said.

The automaker will present Maserati's Grecale SUV next month, followed by Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV, with sales due from June 2022.

Italian unions will meet Stellantis on Monday at Italy's Industry Ministry to discuss production and jobs in the country.

Stellantis has also decided to close Opel's Eisenach plant in Germany until the end of the year. because of the chips shortages.

Alfa or Maserati never used Chrysler built ZF 8HP.

Chrysler as Chrysler LLC, FCA US.

They produce some of ZF 8HP transmissions called 845RE and 850RE. They are not used in Alfa Romeo and Maserati products which have ZF sourced transmissions like ZF 8HP50.

Even FCA US products are using ZF sourced transmissions for Hemi engines.
