  • Golf GTI02: the agile, efficient and fast, high-tech, compact sports car of the digital age generating 180 kW (245 PS).
  • Golf GTE03with a system output of 180 kW (245 PS) it is now just as powerful as the Golf GTI. Its hybrid drive links electric sustainability and a zero-emissions range of around 60 km with great levels of dynamism.
  • Golf GTD04: the new Golf GTD is a real endurance athlete. The vehicle’s output of 147 kW (200 PS) has been coupled with very long fuel ranges.

Three Golf versions, three characters, three efficient drive systems – one design and equipment philosophy. We are approaching the world premieres of the new Golf GTI, Golf GTD and Golf GTE at the Geneva Motor Show (5 to 15 March 2020). 44 years ago Volkswagen invented the Golf GTI, a sports car icon. It was followed in 1982 by the first Golf GTD and in 2014 by the first Golf GTE featuring plug-in hybrid drive.

Golf GTI. A car becomes an icon when its design DNA and character remain recognisable for decades – as is the case with the Golf GTI. For 44 years, Volkswagen has been reinventing this icon of sporty, compact cars – from one generation to the next. The eighth generation of the Golf GTI is now celebrating its debut. Newly designed and developed – fully digitalised and networked. The new Golf GTI is powered by a 180 kW (245 PS) 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine. The maximum torque is 370 Nm. The four-cylinder engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. A 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) is optionally available.

Golf GTE. The Golf GTE’s plug-in hybrid drive is made up of a TSI four-cylinder unit generating 110 kW (150 PS), an electric motor with an output of 85 kW (115 PS), a 6-speed DSG gearbox and a new lithium-ion battery. The drive train delivers a power output of 180 kW (245 PS) and a maximum system torque of 400 Nm. Compared with its predecessor, the all-electric range has increased significantly to now around 60 km. The increase in range has been achieved by improving the new Golf’s aerodynamics and by managing to boost the energy capacity of the battery by 50% to 13 kWh. The Golf GTE can be driven at speeds of up to 130 km/h in all-electric mode.

Golf GTD. The long-distance sports car features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI power unit with an output of 147 kW (200 PS). The Golf GTD engine convinces with a maximum torque of 400 Nm. The TDI already unleashes this power at very low engine speeds. As with all turbocharged diesel engines in the new Golf, the Golf GTD’s drive system is linked to two SCR catalytic converters connected in series (SCR = Selective Catalytic Reduction). This new twin dosing SCR system with dual AdBlue injection greatly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions compared with its predecessor. Volkswagen offers the Golf GTD featuring a 7-speed dual clutch DSG gearbox as standard.

Three Golf models, three characters. The design of the three new, sporty Golf models reflects unadulterated charisma, something that becomes particularly evident at the front end. The standard LED headlights are positioned low down and dominate the striking front end in conjunction with the radiator grille. The narrow edge below the bonnet, reaching across the entire front, has been designed in one of the three dedicated colours – red for the GTI, blue for the GTE and silver in the GTD. Upon activating the daytime running lights, two continuous LED strips up to the Volkswagen logo emphasise this striking line. This creates the completely new, unmistakable headlight design of the Golf GTI, GTE and GTD. Just as striking and unmistakable: the large, continuous, air inlet grille at the bottom featuring the honeycomb pattern so typical of this model as well as the integrated fog lights (optional).

Although Volkswagen is enhancing the digital and networking capabilities of the eighth-generation Golf – and with it also the GTI, GTE and GTD – to an unprecedented extent, many of the original GT insignia can still be found on board. However, the sports steering wheel of yesteryear has been transformed into a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel with touch controls and an optionally integrated Travel Assist button to help the powerful Golf models reach a top speed of 210 km/h while Travel Assist is engaged. The three silver spokes on the steering wheel have been retained – in the GTI, the interior of the central spoke has a red finish, while the GTE and GTD have blue and silver finishes respectively. The classic checked pattern of the sports seats is also retained. The new checked design is called Scalepaper. The seams of the grey and black design are red in the GTI, blue in the GTE and light grey in the GTD.

Press Release GTI:

Cita
  • Eighth generation of the Golf GTI with 180 kW / 245 PS is an efficient high-tech compact sports car
  • Networked Vehicle Dynamics Manager guarantees a new level of added performance
  • The unmistakable style of the GTI is extremely popular: more than 2.3 million cars have been sold since 1976

Digital, networked, sharper design and more active driving dynamics than ever before: with the new Golf GTI, Volkswagen again significantly raises the bar in the sporty compact class. The result is a Golf GTI that combines maximum dynamics with maximum comfort. The new GTI is available to order now. Prices in Germany start from 37,607.38 euros0304 (Golf GTI with 7-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox).

Things continue apace with the new Golf: following the sales launch of the new Golf GTE05 just a few days ago, the next flagship model of the Golf family is now also available – the new Golf GTI. This sporty model has enhanced the product portfolio since 1976. Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Sales, explains: “For over four decades, the three letters GTI have stood for sporty driving pleasure and technology at the highest level. We thank our customers for 2.3 million Golf GTI sold. The new GTI is full of innovation. It too will set new standards and thrill our customers.”

Networked and with active driving dynamics. Like its predecessors, the latest version of the Golf GTI has also been equipped with groundbreaking technical features. The turbocharged engine now develops 180 kW / 245 PS, its torque is 370 Nm. The agility and sportiness has been perfected with the new, networked Vehicle Dynamics Manager. This higher-level control system centrally coordinates all electromechanical running gear functions. DCC running gear with variable shock absorbers is optionally available so that GTI drivers can choose their own very individual setup using the standard driving profile selection. The result is an even more precise driving experience.

Digital and innovative. The digital displays of the standard Digital Cockpit and infotainment system start up as soon as the doors are opened. Discover Media – including streaming and internet – is installed here as standard, while the 10-inch Discover Pro system is optionally available as the maximum specification level. A new and individual feature is the possibility of activating a custom GTI design. Here, the rev counter is displayed in the middle of the Digital Cockpit. The new standard background lighting bathes the displays and many other illuminated interior areas in a spectrum of 30 freely configurable colours.

Unmistakably GTI. Typical GTI details are also preserved in the new generation. The classic checked pattern has been given a new, fresh look, and now covers the also newly developed sports seats. The new Golf no longer has an ignition lock – this has been replaced by an Engine Start/Stop button (standard equipment), which is notable in that after the doors are opened, it pulses red until the engine is started. The three-spoke sports steering wheel of old has been transformed into a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel with touch controls and an optionally integrated Travel Assist button to permit assisted driving of the Golf up to speeds of 210 km/h.

The design of the new Golf GTI also matches its added driving dynamics. At the front, the wide air intakes, low-positioned standard LED headlights and unmistakable signature light on the radiator grille are particularly distinctive. The latter is illuminated for the first time by a narrow LED strip, which flows on the left and right into the headlight modules. At the rear, the roof spoiler, diffuser and two round tailpipes located at the outer sides are striking distinguishing features of the sporty GTI variant.

Golf GTE

Press Release GTE:

Cita
  • Two new plug-in hybrid models: the Golf eHybrid02 has an all-electric range of up to 80 kilometres03, while the more powerful Golf GTE04 can cover up to 62 kilometres03
  • Golf eHybrid: the drive of the new Golf eHybrid is designed for maximum comfort and develops a system power of 150 kW (204 PS)
  • Golf GTE: thanks to additional electric power, the Performance hybrid drive of the new Golf GTE matches the power output of the Golf GTI with 180 kW (245 PS)05

Volkswagen is electrifying the eighth generation of the Golf with two new plug-in hybrid versions: the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE. This means that no less than two Golf models are now available as plug-in hybrid models for the first time. The Golf eHybrid is designed for maximum comfort and delivers an output of 150 kW (204 PS). Price in Germany: from 39,781.18 euros0607. With an output of 180 kW (245 PS), the Golf GTE offers outstandingly sporty performance, combining both power and efficiency. Base price: 41,667.40 euros0607. Sales of both models are starting now. By the end of the year, a total of eight different Golf and Golf Variant models will be available with hybrid drive – the Golf will therefore be the brand’s product line with the greatest level of hybridisation.

The new Golf plug-in hybrid versions feature a 50 percent-higher energy capacity (13 kWh) compared with the plug-in hybrid drive of the Golf Mk7. This allows a wider electric range. When the battery is charged, the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE start electrically and therefore with zero local emissions. The Golf eHybrid covers up to 80 kilometres fully electrically, while the Golf GTE boasts a locally zero emissions range of up to 62 kilometres. The E-MODE also permits all-electric driving on country roads and motorways. The TSI engine (turbocharged petrol engine) is automatically switched on at higher speeds – depending on the activated hybrid mode, driving profile or charge level of the battery. The drive then operates in economical Hybrid mode, which makes it possible to achieve very high combined ranges – up to 870 km (NEDC) with the e-Hybrid resp. 745 km (NEDC) with the Golf GTE.

In every case, a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox DSG is responsible for gearshifts as standard. On longer journeys, electric energy can be reserved for driving into a built-up area at the destination so that driving in the city is possible with locally zero emissions.

Volkswagen offers the Golf eHybrid in the upscale “Style”07 equipment versions. Like the predecessor, the Golf GTE will again be offered as an independent model with customised GTE07 equipment. Always on board: features such as Digital Cockpit Pro (digital instruments), “Discover Media” navigation system including streaming and Internet, DAB+, mobile phone interface with inductive charging function, voice control, Dynamic Road Sign Display, a multifunction leather steering wheel, sports comfort seats (eHybrid), Travel Assist for assisted driving up to 210 km/h (including Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Assist lane keeping system), Front Assist Autonomous Emergency Braking, Air Care Climatronic automatic air conditioner, start/stop system with brake energy recuperation, V2X local warning system, new Keyless Start keyless comfort start function, LED Plus headlights and LED tail light clusters as well as alloy wheels. The Golf GTE is additionally equipped with details such as customised bumpers as well as customised premium sports seats with integrated head restraints and an LED light strip in the radiator grille.

With the new Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE, Volkswagen is launching the next models as part of a wide-ranging product offensive. The number of different models available in the eighth Golf generation will be extended in particular as part of this offensive. Iconic sporty models such as the new Golf GTI08, Golf GTD08 and Golf R08 will be launched in the coming weeks. The market launch of the new Golf Variant will also take place soon. The mild hybrid models are also becoming increasingly important. The new Golf eTSI with the first 48 V mild hybrid drive (110 kW / 150 PS)09 is already on sale. Further power output level of the eTSI will follow before the end of 2020.

Golf GTD

Press Release GTD:

Cita

In brief:
New Golf GTD features the most powerful turbocharged diesel engine in the long history of the Volkswagen best-seller

Important facts

  • Endurance athlete. High efficiency levels of the new GTD engine enable very long ranges
  • Turbocharged diesel engine. 147 kW (200 PS)01 of power and 400 Nm of torque are the vital statistics of the most powerful Golf with a TDI engine
  • Dual SCR catalytic converter. Innovativetwin dosing significantly cuts nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of the turbocharged diesel engine (TDI)
  • Always automatic. New Golf GTD launched onto the market with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) as standard
  • LED headlights as standard. GTD with illuminated radiator grille fin which merges into the LED headlights
  • GTD insignia. Air intake grille in honeycomb design, red brake calipers, illuminated radiator grille and red pulsing start button
  • GTD interior. Background lighting with 30 colours and Digital Cockpit on board as standard

The new Golf GTD01 is a real endurance athlete. With its 147 kW (200 PS) 2.0-litre TDI engine, the new flagship of the Golf diesel models is more powerful, more efficient and produces lower emissions than ever before. The sporty overall package is rounded off by GTD-specific features and extensive standard equipment. The new Golf GTD’s driving performance and consumption are also impressive: thanks to the power of 400 newton metres of torque, the Volkswagen races to 100 km/h in only 7.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 245 km/h. At the same time, the combined NEDC consumption is only 4.4 l/100 km. As with all the turbocharged diesel engines for the new Golf, the GTD’s drive system is linked to two SCR catalytic converters connected in series (SCR = Selective Catalytic Reduction). This new twin dosing SCR system with dual AdBlue injection greatly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions compared with its predecessor. Volkswagen offers the Golf GTD featuring a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DQ381 DSG) as standard.

Dynamic front end. The design of the new Golf GTD01 embodies sporty charisma. The standard LED headlights are positioned low down and form a striking crossbar in conjunction with the radiator grille. A slim, silver line towards the top of the bonnet now stretches across the front section. An LED strip in the headlight mirrors the silver line when the daytime running lights are activated – or when the driver approaches with the key. As standard, the radiator grille is illuminated as a continuation of the LED strip for the first time. This creates the completely new, unmistakable headlight design of the Golf GTD. Another striking and unmistakable feature is the typically large, one-piece lower air intake grille in a honeycomb pattern. It is framed on the outside by a black application, with a striking wing-like design on the sides. The new GTD insignia also include the optional fog lights which have now been integrated into the air intake grille in an X formation.

Striking outline. The side section features the eye-catching, standard 17-inch Richmond alloy wheels. Painted in red: the brake calipers. The Golf also bears a GTD signet on the side of the front wing. The standard equipment also features wider side sills in black – with a splitter design similar to that found on racing cars. Towards the front the sills come together to form the front spoiler and at the rear they morph into the diffuser. An individualised spoiler extends the roof line at the very top of the outline.

Superior rear end. The eighth Golf generation has a powerful shoulder section and striking rear end design with standard LED tail light clusters. The GTD01 also benefits from this dynamic design. The GTD lettering is now positioned centrally under the Volkswagen emblem rather than on the driver side as it was before. The roof spoiler is extended rearwards and merges with the black edging around the rear window, making the Golf GTD appear even flatter. Down below, the sporty diffuser distinguishes the GTD from the less powerful versions of the product line with diesel engine. A further distinguishing feature of the Golf GTD: the exhaust system’s twin tailpipes arranged on the left-hand side.

Traditional GTD characteristics in the vehicle interior. Anyone opening the doors on new Golf GTD’s01 will immediately notice the premium sport front seats with integrated head restraints and the traditional, yet redesigned, Scalepaper tartan pattern. Signature GTD: silver highlights integrated into the grey and black tartan as stitching. A silver clip on the sports steering wheel covered in perforated leather also indicates to drivers that they are at the wheel of a Golf GTD. The standard Digital Cockpit with a 10-inch display is behind the sports steering wheel. The engine start/stop button pulsates red until the engine starts – yet another exciting feature. Applications in the vehicle interior boast a sporty, carbon-fibre look.

Progressive technology package. A host of functions, assist and convenience systems round off the Golf GTD’s comprehensive standard features. These include driving profile selection, progressive steering, electronic differential lock XDS, Dynamic Road Sign Display, voice control and a mobile phone interface with inductive charging function. Car2X technology, which allows vehicles to warn each other of hazards, and the lane keeping system Lane Assist guarantee added safety.
