VW faces sluggish start for ID4 sales in China

Lack of smart tech features, fierce competition blamed for low demand

SHANGHAI -- Volkswagen's ID family - the backbone of its electric-vehicle ambitions - is off to what even company sources call a worryingly slow start in China.

Sales of two ID4 electric SUVs, the ID4 X and ID4 Crozz, were just 1,213 combined in May. And that was about 200 fewer than in April, according to auto consultancy LMC.

The sales fall far short of VW's initial hopes, four people with knowledge of the matter said, and below what some other automakers have achieved with early sales of flagship EV offerings in the world's largest auto market.

VW's venture with state-owned SAIC Motor, which makes the slightly bigger ID4 X model, had been targeting sales of 50,000-60,000 vehicles this year, according to comments by Yang Siyao, a company marketing executive, in Chinese media in March.

A separate venture between VW and FAW which makes the ID4 Crozz had similar targets, one of the sources said.

Those goals now seem unrealistic.

Furthermore, both ventures' EV plants are running below 10 percent of production capacity, according to three of the people.

The sources blamed the less than auspicious debut on a lack of smart tech features, fierce competition, a late launch compared to Tesla and Chinese EV makers as well as hiccups with its new EV sales network.

"Sales so far are behind our earlier expectations. We've had to dial down production plans for the ID4 again and again," said one person, who like the other sources was not authorized to speak to media and declined to be identified.

"This is not healthy, but at the moment customers are not coming to buy them."

In another sign of sales stress, SAIC-Volkswagen has suggested staff members buy ID4s, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.

By comparison, Tesla sold 6,612 of its Model Y in China in the first two months after its launch. The ID4's sales performance in China also contrasts sharply with Europe, where it is a top-selling electric car with 12,101 sold in the first two months post-launch, according to JATO Dynamics.

VW said in a statement to Reuters that ID4 China sales were in line with expectations as it builds up production and a new sales network, adding it does not view Tesla's Model Y as a direct competitor for the ID4, which occupies a different vehicle type segment.

It also said it was confident the two ID4 models would see sales growth and noted plans for three more ID models to be launched this year in China.

More than any other country, China has aggressively pushed for the adoption of EVs, introducing sales quotas as it seeks to cut pollution, encourage the growth of its auto industry and reduce reliance on oil.

VW, the country's biggest foreign automaker with 3.85 million vehicles - mostly gasoline - sold last year, has more riding on successfully transitioning its customers to EVs than the average automaker. It has also declared its intention to surpass Tesla as the world's top EV maker by 2025, ensuring that China will become a crucial battleground.

Lacking tech

But getting customers on board is another matter altogether.

At a shopping mall in western Shanghai last week, David Qian, a 50-year-old engineer, was looking for an EV for his wife but found he was not drawn to the ID4 X, which starts at just under 200,000 yuan ($31,000).

"The car looks okay but I know it is not smart enough," said Qian, who owns a Tesla Model 3 and enthuses about its assisted-driving technology.

Unlike Tesla models and a growing number of vehicles from Chinese electric car makers like Xpeng and Nio, the ID4 cannot park itself and does not offer advanced self-driving features or advanced voice-controlled functions.

"Chinese consumers value the sense of technology and science fiction of electric vehicles, and brand loyalty has always been low which is completely different from the European market," said Yale Zhang, head of Shanghai-based consultancy AutoForesight.

And unlike Europe, electric car competition is already cutthroat in China, where a plethora of manufacturers compete and the top-selling Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV, an entry-level sedan made by a General Motors joint venture, costs just 28,800 yuan ($4,450).

At the shopping mall where Qian checked out the ID4, the SAIC-Volkswagen showroom is right next door to a store run by Xpeng and close to rival stores belonging to EV startup Neta and Huawei, which sells an electric car in partnership with automaker Seres. A store for Chinese EV maker Aiways is also set to open nearby soon.

"Compared with Europe, this car has too much competition and they are all new models with a strong tech sense," said Zhang.

VW said in its statement it would be offering new software feature updates in the future and with newer models.

Teething problems

VW has been faster than some other foreign automakers in China with EV development such as Toyota and Ford, but sources say ideally it should have moved quicker.

Its joint ventures' EV plants, which can each build 300,000 vehicles per year, were ready for mass production in early 2020 but time taken to develop the vehicles in Germany meant the new ID4s did not get regulatory approval until July, they added.

At the distribution level, Volkswagen is grappling with the introduction of new sales strategies popular with pure-play EV competitors.

Rather than relying predominantly on its existing roughly 2,000-dealer network, it is shifting to an agency sales model for EVs where showrooms are typically located in shopping malls, prices are fixed and there is no inventory for showroom operators.

The lack of inventory, however, has meant that staff who are used to the pressure inventory brings have less financial motivation to sell product, people familiar with the matter said.

Volkswagen said in its statement that production at its EV plants was running on schedule and that internal feedback on its new agency model is very positive.

It had 12 ID stores in China as of end-May and plans to have more than 100 stores by the end of this year. It is also boosting its number of ID sales agents to more than 1,000 by the year's end from 825 currently.

Volkswagen presents all-electric ID. XTREME01 off-road concept car in Locarno

  • ID. XTREME concept car is based on the performance-enhanced ID.4 GTX02
  • All-electric off-road vehicle with all-wheel drive is the most powerful ID. model yet
  • ID. XTREME shows the performance potential and versatility of the modular electric drive matrix
  • Volkswagen is supporting the international ID. Treffen in Ticino as a partner

Electrifying surprise at the ID. Treffen in Locarno: Volkswagen presents the ID. XTREME in Ticino today, an exceptional off-road concept car that will generate an enthusiastic response among the many electric mobility fans at the event. The fully electric concept car with all-wheel drive system is based on the ID.4 GTX and combines the strengths of a modern SUV with the sense of adventure embodied by a rugged off-road vehicle.

The ID. XTREME01 from Volkswagen stands for maximum emotion and a desire for adventure. The concept vehicle was created by the team of Andreas Reckewerth (Head of overall vehicle) in the Volkswagen Development department. “The modular electric drive matrix (MEB) has enormous technical potential,” says Silke Bagschik, Head of the MEB Product Line. “For many of our customers, vehicles are much more than just a means of transport. With the ID. XTREME, we are raising electric mobility from VW to a new performance level.” The result of the project is a unique off-road vehicle that impresses with its rugged appearance and outstanding power. A high-performance drive on the rear axle and software adaptations in the drive control unit increase the system power of the concept car by 65 kW to 285 kW compared with the ID.4 GTX02 – in other words, by about 30 percent. “The ID. XTREME is made by enthusiasts at Volkswagen for ID. enthusiasts here in Locarno. We are really eager to find out how the fans of electromobility react to the vehicle. Based on the feedback from our community, we will decide how to proceed with the project," adds Silke Bagschik.

The exterior of the VW ID. XTREME01 also shows that the vehicle is ready for every off-road adventure. Raised rally running gear, 18-inch off-road wheels, a modified crash member with additional front bumper, and 50 mm-wider wings manufactured by 3D printing combine to give the concept vehicle an authentic off-road look. The roof carrier with additional LED lights and the completely closed aluminium underbody also equip the fully electric all-wheel drive vehicle for excursions away from paved roads.

Acoustically also, the ID. XTREME01 has something special to offer: the driving noise was developed together with Volkswagen Design especially for the concept vehicle and is output to the outside via a sound generator in the wheel housing. In the interior, the concept car impresses with various highlights, including numerous Alcantara applications, revamped seats and elements in the accent colour orange. And it goes without saying that the ID. XTREME is sustainable: a no longer required test vehicle from production development and a used 82 kWh battery were taken as the basis for the concept vehicle.

Volkswagen is presenting the ID. XTREME01 to the public for the first time at the ID. Treffen in Locarno. The event by and for fans of electric mobility is taking place for the second time this year and could become the green and sustainable event for electric mobility modelled on the GTI meeting at Lake Wörth (Austria). This year, ID. enthusiasts from the whole of Europe are meeting up on the shore of Lago Maggiore from 6 to 10 September to share their experiences with electric mobility.

Initiated and organized by the ID. Drivers Club the ID. Treffen is supported by Volkswagen as part of its commitment to the way to ZERO. Together with experts from the company the team of the Volkswagen Drivers Club is attending the event to provide insights into the current developments in the area of sustainable mobility. Alongside the ID. XTREME01, Volkswagen is also presenting other models from the ID. family in Locarno.

Upgrade for the ID.4 and ID.5: new infotainment system with intuitive operation, new electric drive with more power and efficiency

  • Now available to order: upgraded ID.4 and ID.5 with completely new operating concept and new efficiency drive
  • Strong and efficient: new electric drive of the ID.401 and ID.502 develops up to 60 kW more power than previous versions and enables WLTP ranges of up to 556 km03
  • Attractive price-performance ratio: prices remain constant and start at € 40,335

Volkswagen is launching pre-sales for the enhanced ID.4 and ID.5 models. The two electric models will now be offered with a brand new generation of infotainment system and software. In addition, all Pro and GTX versions will feature a new drive system. The high-efficiency drive introduced for the first time for the large ID.704 offers significantly more power together with reduced energy consumption. The combined WLTP range of the ID.4 as a versatile electric SUV is increased to up to 550 kilometres03 (WLTP) thanks to the new electric drive. The spacious ID.5 SUV coupé will have a range of up to 556 kilometres03 (WLTP) on one battery charge. Volkswagen offers the optimized models at the same base prices as their predecessors. The price-performance ratio of the ID.4 and ID.5 has thus been significantly improved.

Imelda Labbé, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management with responsibility for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, says: “Our customers can look forward to exceptional technical performance with the new ID.4 and the new ID.5. Software and infotainment are state-of-the-art. In addition, there are extensive assistance systems that leave nothing to be desired. The further improved ID.4 and ID.5 models are at the top of the segment with their new technologies and the acknowledged balance of driving, comfort and spaciousness.”

Intuitive operation improved. Volkswagen has significantly enhanced the cockpit landscape of the ID.4 and ID.5. The focus here was on intuitive operation. Against this background, both product lines have received brand new latest-generation software which is much faster and offers more functions. In addition, both models are equipped with a new standard infotainment system with a screen diagonal that has been increased to 32.8 centimetres (12.9 inches). The infotainment system impresses with a completely new menu structure while the Digital Cockpit (digital instruments as standard) and the optional augmented reality head-up display have been enhanced. Touch sliders for the air conditioning and volume control are now illuminated and the multifunction steering wheel with new operating logic is also new. Furthermore, Volkswagen has removed and separated the driving mode selector from the housing of the Digital Cockpit and designed it as a steering column switch – like in the ID.7. This creates space for the larger infotainment display. Operation of the ID.4 and ID.5 is made easier by the new IDA voice assistant, which responds more precisely than in the past to natural voice commands and offers new functions including cloud-based weather information and the status of sporting events or stock market prices, which can be queried via IDA. Volkswagen also offers a new premium sound system from Harman Kardon with 480 Watts of music output and 10 speakers (including centre speaker and subwoofer) as an option for both models.

An extra 75 per cent of torque. The most important new technology feature in all ID.4 and ID.5 models with 77 kWh battery (net) is the high-efficiency drive. Thanks to a new electric drive motor on the rear axle and a new-generation battery, it has been possible to reduce energy consumption while at the same time increasing power. An electric drive motor with 210 kW (286 PS)06 is now used in the rear-wheel-drive models ID.4 Pro01 and ID.5 Pro02 – this corresponds to 60 kW more power than in the predecessors. The power delivery is more dynamic in every situation as the torque of the 210 kW drive motor has jumped from 310 to 545 Nm. The additional 235 Nm corresponds to about 75 per cent more torque. With the new rear electric drive motor and an additional drive motor on the front axle, the all-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro 4MOTION0708 develops a system power of 210 kW (286 PS)08 – an increase of 15 kW (21 PS).

GTX models – 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds09. The particularly sporty and likewise all-wheel drive ID.4 GTX1008 and ID.5 GTX1108 flagship models will deliver a system power of 250 kW (340 PS) in future, equivalent to an increase of 30 kW (41 PS). The associated improvement in the dynamic characteristics is clearly noticeable. A good indicator of this is the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. With a time of 5.4 seconds09, the GTX models now clearly beat the six-second mark. As before, the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX are electronically limited to a top speed of 180 km/h. To match the GTX models, the top speed of the Pro models has now also been increased to 180 km/h (previously 160 km/h). The drive of the ID.4 base model remains unchanged: the ID.4 Pure12 has a maximum speed of 160 km/h with its 125 kW motor (170 PS).

Energy for another 178 kilometres in 10 minutes. All ID.4 and ID.5 models with the new 77 kWh battery now have a longer range. Two examples: the new ID.4 Pro can cover a distance of 550 kilometres03 (WLTP combined) – 17 kilometres more than the predecessor. The new ID.5 Pro has a range of up to 556 kilometres03 – an increase of 11 kilometres. The ID.4 and ID.5 models with rear-wheel drive charge with the familiar 135 kW. The all-wheel-drive models now also offer a DC charging capacity that has been increased from 135 to 175 kW. With the maximum charging capacity, these ID. versions can take on enough energy for a further 178 kilometres in about just 10 minutes. The base version ID.4 Pure with a 52 kWh battery is now offered with a charging capacity of up to 115 kW instead of 110 kW.

Faster charging on journeys. New charging and thermal management of all ID.4 and ID.5 models makes sure the battery is pre-conditioned while driving before the next DC charging stop. Thanks to this pre-conditioning, the ID.4 and ID.5 are supplied with new energy again as quickly as possible, especially on long journeys with one or more charging stops.

More comfortable and dynamic at the same time. To complement the new drive system, the running gear has also been reconfigured. Furthermore, Volkswagen has refined control of the optional adaptive chassis control (DCC) and designed the Vehicle Dynamics Manager for an even greater spread between comfort and dynamics.
