Today, Antonella Bruno, Head of the Jeep® brand Europe, unveiled the New Compass, the first Jeep SUV launched in Europe by the Stellantis Group. The launch marks a major step in the importance of the brand around the world and especially in Europe. A replay of the press conference can be viewed here.

The New Compass has been developed to speak a more European language, courtesy of the enhanced quality of the finishes and its advanced on board technology. It also introduces major new features that take it to an even higher level in terms of design, safety, technology and functionality.

Where does its secret lie? In combining two souls of Jeep – the off-road and urban spirit – to meet the needs of customers in the C-SUV segment. Rational, factual people, they are also fascinated by the possibility of getting away from their daily routines: we call them “pragmatic dreamers”.

The new model has a strong aesthetic character, enhanced by a refined and distinctive style – which remains true to the brand’s styling cues, excellent driving dynamics and more sophisticated safety and connectivity. All this crowned by the renowned Jeep 4x4 capability, a feature honed over 80 years of leadership in off-road driving.

In short, whether concerned with a pragmatic need for mobility or the desire to experience exciting everyday ‘adventures’, the answer lies in the New Compass, which offers a balance between performance and emotions, rational usage and dreams of freedom and adventure. All in the name of the brand’s claim: “Go Anywhere, Do Anything”. Because, 80 years later, Jeep remains Jeep.

At the launch of its first generation in 2017, the Jeep Compass marked the return of the brand to the C-SUV segment and was the first Jeep specially designed to hit global roads. This laid solid foundations for the success of this model: since its launch in Europe, the Jeep compact SUV is the driver of the brand’s commercial performance and accounts for more than 40% of its sales, confirming its position as one of the most appreciated Jeep models by European customers and one of the most sought-after in the 4xe configuration with plug-in hybrid technology. Approximately one in four Compass models sold in Europe is a 4xe version. The 4xe variant is the best-selling plug-in hybrid model in Italy.

The New Compass is fitted with a range of efficient internal combustion and plug-in hybrid engines, all Euro 6D Final-compliant, and a range of cutting-edge active and passive safety systems that enhance the dynamic behavior and the renowned Jeep 4x4 capabilities.

The engine range was updated with the addition of the new GSE four-cylinder 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine, designed to offer outstanding performance, while delivering excellent driving comfort and efficiency, with consumption and CO2 emissions reduced by up to 27% (WLTP cycle) when compared to the previous petrol model. All this was made even more fascinating by the debut of the version with plug-in hybrid technology for 100% electric, zero-emissions driving – the combination of extraordinary 4xe capabilities and sustainable mobility: the Jeep brand’s take on electrification.

Along with Renegade, the Compass was the first model to feature the 4xe logo, which identifies all Jeep 4x4 vehicles offering enhanced hybrid capability and performance, and providing the best possible balance between efficiency, driving fun and attention to the environment.

The new model features a refreshed high-tech profile, while maintaining its renowned urban, modern, sophisticated and environment-conscious spirit. More elegant and modern, it features an all-new cabin, designed to improve comfort and life on board, and to make the urban driving experience smarter. Major highlights include the full-HD digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster, DAB radio, Uconnect 5 system with touchscreens from 8.4-inch to 10.1-inch, moved to the middle of the dashboard in a higher position so the driver can remain focused on the road, a five times faster processor, Android operating system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, interactive 3D TomTom navigation and natural voice recognition, and Uconnect Services.

The interior has also been made even more functional with a new arrangement of the central console and augmented storage compartment space (providing nearly 4.4 litres of additional storage – a three-fold increase versus the 2.8 litres of the previous version, now with a total of 7.2 litres). In addition, it offers a more modern and distinctive style, courtesy of the new dashboard, central tunnel, steering wheel and door panels, featuring premium materials and finishes.

The New Compass is the first Jeep vehicle in Europe to offer level 2 autonomous driving and is equipped with the latest generation ADAS, as standard across the range. These include: Traffic Sign Recognition, which reads and interprets the road signs; Intelligent Speed Assist, to automatically keep the car within the speed limit advertised; Drowsy Driver Alert, to alert the drivers when their attention falters or if they drop off for a moment; and Automatic Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, which slows the vehicle down to a complete stop, to avoid (or mitigate) accidents that could occur. But the biggest new feature is the Highway Assist, combining Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering, to automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed and trajectory. The vehicle therefore automatically stays in the middle of the lane, at a sensible distance from the vehicle in front, for a driving experience with total peace of mind (available in the second half of the year).

The New Jeep Compass also comes with a new range, now offered in five trim levels (Sport, Longitude, Limited, S and Trailhawk), with five different combinations of powertrains – petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid, three gearboxes (six-speed manual, automatic Dual Dry Clutch Transmission (DDCT) or six-speed automatic) – and front- or four-wheel drive. The petrol version comes with the 1.3-litre GSE engine with 130 hp or 150 hp, paired with a manual transmission and Dual Dry Clutch Transmission (DDCT) respectively, both with front-wheel drive. To complete the range of internal combustion engines comes the 1.6-litre, 130-hp diesel engine paired with six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid range is offered with two power outputs – 190 hp and 240 hp, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and eAWD four-wheel drive.

Furthermore, there is an array of rental and financial solutions offered by Leasys and FCA Bank that make the Jeep range and New Compass even more accessible to customers. These include innovative rental solution as Leasys Miles, the pay per use mobility solution, and financial solution as the FCA Bank private lease.

Finally, for the launch of the New Jeep Compass, Mopar® developed new accessories with the aim to complete the new vehicle’s features with additional contents, improve the customization opportunities, and enhance the interior comfort offer.

In-depth fact sheets are available at the following links on the media website:

New design

  • Authentic Jeep design, modern, distinctive and high-tech.
  • New front and new full LED headlights, deliver a more sophisticated and technological look.

The exterior of the new Jeep Compass sports a refreshed look featuring an even more sophisticated, modern design, perfectly adapted to its urban character. The changes are mainly to the front, now featuring a broader, more athletic appearance, achieved using stylistic elements that develop horizontally, and highlighting the vehicle's breadth and on-road presence.

Compared to the previous version’s separate fog lamp housing, these components are now integrated into a single broad linear opening in the centre, resulting in a ‘layered’ construction of the front.

The horizontal elements emphasise the linearity of the design, while the sculpted surfaces and the three-dimensional effect of the seven-slot grille highlight its dynamism.

Designers have revamped the look of the legendary Jeep grille, raising its vertical position and dividing it into two horizontal sections. It integrates new full LED headlights featuring a thinner, sleek profile (standard across the range). Available in three different types, they give the New Compass a bolder look. The daytime running lights (DRLs) – now marked out by their subtle elongated form – have also been repositioned and are now built into the main headlights. The lower opening and skid plate are wider and more noticeable too.

All these changes add personality and a technological character to the front, now offering three themes according to the trim: the more functional and urban Limited version, boasting black bumpers with new 18-inch alloy wheels; the elegant S version with metallic grey finish, body-colour bumpers and new multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels; the theme dedicated to the "Trail-Rated” off-road performance of the Trailhawk trim, features a specific grille treatment, body-colour fog lamp bezels, a more noticeable skid plate and specific 17-inch alloy wheels. The development of the Compass’ body has also been focused on functionality, specifically in the Trailhawk version, which now features the bumpers and fog lamps in a higher position. The same change was made to the camera radar housing, which has been moved upwards from the lower air intake to the central opening for greater protection when driving off-road.

Key new features also include full-LED daytime running lights, high beam, low beam and fog lamps that enhance the vehicle’s efficiency and safety. Thanks to the new front lighting, brightness is increased by approximately 100% compared to the Xenon headlamps, resulting in the improved perception of depth and lateral lighting.

The same treatment can be found in the rear, where the horizontal lines of the front continue and characterize the sleek cut of the taillights, providing a more modern and commanding look.

All-new interior

  • Modern, sophisticated new interior, with sculpted 3D surfaces and technical details.
  • Numerous customisation options for finishes and interior upholstery, with high-quality, soft-to-the-touch materials.
  • New full-HD 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • Increased functionality for a smart use of space.

The goal of the Jeep design team was to completely redesign the interior and give it a more modern, sophisticated style, consistent with the exterior design in terms of elegance, linearity and high-tech language. At the same time, their work stressed the need to rethink internal solutions to improve practicality, offer a more functional use of space and broader customisation options.

The update was all-encompassing, involving the dashboard, central tunnel and door panels.  The result is a more sophisticated and spacious cabin, featuring premium materials and technical details.

The overlap of volumes, materials and fabrics has given the new dashboard a three-dimensional design with a horizontal ‘three-layer’ development reminiscent of the architectural language. The central horizontal dashboard panel now looks extremely elegant and essential, with ultra-slim air intakes that almost disappear into its layered structure. The controls are seamlessly integrated and easy to reach, as is the connectivity touchscreen that dominates the middle of the dashboard, now in a higher and more ergonomic position.

The layered construction of the dashboard has also provided the ability to differentiate and customise the cabin according to the various trim levels, by using various pairings of materials, textures and colors, including upholstery in prestigious Nappa leather and practical sports fabric for the central panel, with high-tech aluminium and carbon fibre-effect finishes for the upper panel.

A brand-new chrome insert surrounds the inner dashboard profile, which can also be customised in liquid chrome, brushed chrome, gloss black (Piano Black) and metallic grey (Gunmetal).

The design team's goal was also to improve functionality. The redesigned central tunnel is now in a higher position and offers a new, large, almost 5-litre storage compartment under the central armrest and an additional 2.4-litre compartment next to the new gear lever, to store a mini-tablet or other small accessories. These numerous smart solutions have increased storage compartment space almost three-fold (by 4.4 litres).

Finally, the increased functionality also involves the exterior, featuring the new tailgate that is operated by making a kicking motion under the bumper to open.

Another major new, high-tech feature for the New Compass is the full-HD 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, which accentuates the feeling of modernity. Standard on Limited, Trailhawk and S (optional on Longitude), it provides the user with around two dozen configuration options in five customisable menus.

Intuitive technology with the Uconnect™ 5 system

  • The New Compass sets new standards for the Jeep range in terms of infotainment systems.
  • Three Uconnect™ systems – 8.4, and new 10.1 and 10.1 NAV – offer ultra-HD screens and new features including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™ integration.
  • More powerful, higher-performance processor with improved responsiveness.
  • All the new features at your fingertips, for a smart on board experience enhancing the ‘at-home feeling’.

The New Compass is fitted with the latest generation of the Uconnect™ system, offering the new 10.1-inch Ultra HD display, for an extremely intuitive user experience. The new Uconnect 5 system comes with a more powerful, higher-performance processor with responsiveness that is five times better than the previous generation. By using an Android operating system and 4G connectivity with Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, Uconnect 5 brings flexibility that will allow the system to continuously evolve to offer new content, features and services. With the new Uconnect system, drivers benefit from an extremely intuitive interface to access all the functions available with ‘touch & swipe’ input and to create their own interface with ‘one-touch access’ to their favorite and frequently used features.

The Uconnect 5 system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen and integrated TomTom navigation also boasts the natural language interface system with advanced voice recognition, so drivers can talk to the car to control its settings, program the air conditioning and choose your favourite music. This feature is integrated into vehicles with TomTom navigation and can be activated hands-free with the wake word “Hey Jeep!”.

Uconnect 5 features easy-to-use connectivity, the main new features of this new-generation system include:

  • 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch digital touchscreen;
  • Multiple user profiles – customisable music preferences, apps, seat position, mirror angles and climate comfort levels, and frequent destinations, plus a ‘Valet’ mode;
  • Wireless integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as standard across the range;
  • Fully customisable homepage for quick access to frequently used features and one-touch operation;
  • Integration of Amazon Alexa features, via the ‘Home to Car’ interface offered by the ‘My Jeep’, which provides constant updates on vehicle status from home, checks the level of charge and/or fuel, searches for points of interest, the vehicle’s latest location, sends remote door’s locking and unlocking commands, and much more. The service is also available in-car via the ‘Alexa Voice Service’, a veritable driving assistant to interact with. For example, it can be asked to add products to the shopping list, to search for a restaurant nearby or to adjust lights or heating connected to the user’s home automation system, all while remaining focused on the road;
  • TomTom navigation with improved search and predictive text functions, natural voice recognition and connected services for real-time traffic updates;
  • Seamless, over-the-air map updates for Uconnect NAV system;
  • Customisable radio user experience with new touch & swipe mode and the option to create widgets according to preferences.

The Jeep Compass is well-equipped to keep vehicle occupants connected while on the go. Standard on all trims from the Longitude upwards is the wireless charging pad for easy smartphone charging (at up to 15 W). By simply placing the device on the pad in front of the gear lever, the charging starts, making life on board easier and most of all 100% wireless.

The New Compass Uconnect 5 system also offers Uconnect Services, with a series of innovative connected services for customers, as well as the Emergency Call function. These include:

- My Assistant: connects the customer with an operator to request geolocated roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown and to receive the support needed to resolve technical issues. Also included in the My Assistant pack, customers will receive a monthly report by e-mail, in which they can check the vehicle’s current usage and health status.

- My Remote: via a mobile app on their smartphones, customers can schedule vehicle charging for the most convenient time slots, find the exact location of the vehicle, lock and unlock the doors, turn the lights on, program the air conditioning system, and set driving alerts based on speed and vehicle position.

New-generation safety systems

  • The latest Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) make the Compass the first Jeep in Europe with Level 2 autonomous driving.
  • New high-resolution 360° camera for stress-free parking in the city.

In terms of safety, the New Jeep Compass offers an even more complete specification, suitable for everyday driving needs. As well as the systems now available as standard across the range – including Forward Collision Warning and LaneSense Departure Warning, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) and front, side and curtain airbags – the active and passive safety specifications are further enhanced with new devices and innovative technology that refines the interaction between driver, vehicle and road.  These systems increase the driver’s field of vision, help make information easier to see and enable driver-assistance systems to ensure a safe and stress-free driving experience, especially in the city. These include Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Assist, Drowsy Driver Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Recognition, all offered as standard features across the range. Even better, the New Jeep Compass is also the first Jeep vehicle in Europe to include Highway Assist, a driver assistance system for level 2 (L2) autonomous driving, using the combination of the Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centring systems when driving on motorways (optionally available in the second half of the year).

More specifically, the new safety specification available on the New Compass include:

  • Traffic Sign Recognition, standard across the range, uses a front-facing camera to detect the speed limit and the related road signs, including those that prohibit overtaking.
  • Intelligent Speed Assist combines Adaptive Cruise Control and Traffic Sign Recognition, suggesting the driver automatically adjust the speed according to the limits indicated by the road signs.  It comes as standard on all versions.
  • Drowsy Driver Alert tracks vehicle movement and interaction, such as lane deviation and steering-wheel input over time, for driving behavior consistent with that of a drowsy driver. When certain thresholds are reached, the system responds with audio and/or visual cautions for the driver to pull over. The feature comes standard on all models.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Recognition alerts the driver of the danger and brings the vehicle to a complete stop to avoid collision with a pedestrian or a cyclist (standard on all versions).
  • Highway Assist (or Level 2 autonomous driving) makes the new Compass the first Jeep model with this advanced monitoring technology, including a front-facing camera to keep an eye on the car's surroundings, both lengthways and sideways. The system uses the Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering devices. The former brakes or accelerates, paying attention to the obstacles it encounters, while Lane Centering uses radar and cameras to keep the vehicle in the middle of the lane, provided its markings are correctly detected. It will be available on request on the Limited and S versions in the second half of the year.
  • Additional protection and safety are guaranteed by the 360° camera. Optionally available on Limited, S and Trailhawk trims, this system offers a 360° view of the vehicle and its surroundings, enhanced by dynamic gridlines displayed on a 10.1-inch digital touchscreen. With four high-definition cameras positioned on the grille, rearview mirrors and tailgate, the system offers four different views and activates when driving up to 12 km/h.

A full range of engines

  • Five powertrains combinations, including internal combustion engines – both petrol and diesel – and plug-in hybrid technology.
  • The updated diesel version is now Euro 6D Final-compliant, and delivers more power, more efficient fuel consumption and reduced emissions.

The range of engines in the New Compass includes petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, all Euro 6D Final-compliant. This includes the updated version of the 1.6-litre Multijet II, now capable of delivering 130 hp at 3,750 rpm, and 320 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm, paired with a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The update has seen a 10 hp increase in power delivery versus the 1.6-litre diesel engine available on the previous model, which also translates into benefits both in terms of consumption (10% lower) and CO2 emissions (11 g/km less in the WLTP cycle).

The petrol range includes a 4-cylinder 1.3-litre GSE turbo engine with two output levels: 130 hp and 270 Nm of peak torque in combination with a six-speed manual transmission; or 150 hp and 270 Nm of peak torque, paired with a Dual Dry Clutch Transmission (DDCT). Both petrol options are front-wheel drive.

The 1.3-litre engine is designed to offer outstanding performance both on- and off-road while delivering excellent driving comfort. It has been updated with specific turbo-matching, maximising the engine response at low engine speed and reducing CO2 emissions and consumption by up to 27% (WLTP cycle) when compared to previous 4x4 petrol version with automatic transmission.

The 4-cylinder 1.3-litre turbo engine with plug-in hybrid technology, 190 hp or 240 hp and 270 Nm of torque, six-speed automatic transmission and eAWD powers the 4xe versions and completes the New Compass engine range. Today ‘4xe’ identifies all Jeep 4x4 vehicles featuring enhanced hybrid capability and performance, guaranteeing the best possible balance between efficiency, driving fun and attention to the environment.

On the 4xe versions, the 1.3-litre turbo engine is paired with an electric motor located on the rear axle, powered by an 11.4 kWh battery that can be recharged while driving or via an external power outlet: either at home on your domestic mains, using the efficient and exclusive easyWallbox or the more advanced Connected Wallbox, or from a public charge point. On its own, the efficient 1.3-litre turbo engine delivers two output levels (130 hp and 180 hp), plus the 60 hp produced by the electric motor, adding up to a total of 190 hp (Longitude and Limited versions) or 240 hp (Trailhawk and S). In terms of torque, the electric motor produces 250 Nm, with the combustion engine generating 270 Nm. By combining the internal combustion engine and the electric motors, the New Compass 4xe guarantees remarkable performance and driving pleasure with acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in around 7.5 seconds (according to the version), a pure electric top speed of 130 km/h, rising to 200 km/h in hybrid mode. Rapid response and smooth delivery ensure maximum driving pleasure.

4xe models are also ideal cars for driving in the city, courtesy of plug-in hybrid technology, offering zero-emissions travel in full-electric mode, with a range between 47 and 49 km (WLTP cycle), depending on the version. On longer hauls, with the internal combustion engine, average CO2 emissions are between 44 and 47 g/km in hybrid mode (WLTP cycle) depending on the version, while in case of extended off-road driving, the two electric motors featuring Powerloop ensure that eAWD traction is always available to take on extreme adventures with peace of mind.
