Reborn Capri | Auto Express News | News | Auto Express

It's the car every Ford fan has been waiting to see! Here’s the new Capri.

The original was one of the most famous and best loved models in the firm’s history, and left the scene in the late Eighties. Now, the time has come to reinvent the classic.

Affordable coupés are experiencing a real renaissance, and Ford has already proved its talent for building niche products with models such as the S-MAX compact MPV and Kuga 4x4. So the stage is set for the Capri to make its stunning comeback.

One thing is for sure – it will not be short of competition. Audi has its A5 and Volkswagen has resurrected the Scirocco, while Toyota is planning a Celica replacement based on Subaru Impreza running gear.

There’s also Hyundai’s forthcoming Coupé, plus news that Peugeot has at last given its 308 RC Z the green light for production.

But while there will be an army of rivals, the Capri will certainly have style in its favour. As you can see from our pictures, the new Ford is a real feast for the eyes. If it seems a little familiar, that’s because it takes some cues from the 2003 Visos concept.

However, it mixes those with the company’s latest design themes. At the front there are the trademark twin grilles, with a large lower air intake incorporating neat spotlights. Bold Mondeo-style headlamps complete the Capri’s striking look.

Its profile harks back to the original model, with a tail-heavy stance and familiar C-shaped rear windows and thick pillars. At the back, strong shoulder lines combine with distinctive tail-lights and a sloping tailgate to create a pert-looking rear. A neat roof spoiler and venturi-style lower bumper finish the design off.

Inside, the Capri will offer a 2+2 seating layout, with a cabin inspired by the current-generation Mondeo’s. Under the skin, it’s likely that Ford will follow VW’s approach with the Scirocco, which sits on the Golf platform, and base the car around the Focus. That will mean a front-wheel-drive layout and a similar engine line-up to the family model, with the range topped by the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged unit from the ST hot hatch.

An RS version, powered by a 3.2-litre six-cylinder motor and offering four-wheel drive, could also be on the cards.

With the Focus as a starting point, things bode well for the Capri’s hand-ling. Engineers will give the new model a sporty suspension set-up to ensure excellent grip and agility. There’s even the possibility it will benefit from the Mondeo’s adaptive damping system. This would provide the car with sharp handling or refined cruising ability at the flick of a switch.

As Ford has yet to officially confirm its new Capri plans, we won’t see the car before the next decade. However, it has been reported that the blue oval is planning to reveal a concept version of the coupé at a major motor show in 2009.

BOOHH!!!!!

    focus4wd.jpg

That's right, BTG can reveal that the 2009 Ford Focus 4WD is still undergoing testing, despite numerous articles claiming that car will indeed be just FWD. Having seen the car power oversteer out of Wehrseifen, I was convinced that the car was 4WD. A chance encounter in Touristenfahrt tonight gave me the opportunity to lie down and squint underneath... where I saw a rear diff!

A quick chat with an un-named official confirmed that the car is still undergoing rigorous testing to be made ready for production. Whether this is to be badged as an RS, or as something even fruitier and less readily available remains to be seen. But this 350bhp six-cylinder, 4WD Focus is definitely real and definitely fast!

New Ford Focus | Auto Express News | News | Auto Express

    car_photo_251016_25.jpg

Take a look at the best picture yet of Ford’s Focus RS! Just a few months after bosses gave the new hot hatch the green light (Issue 992), we caught this striking prototype testing in Germany.

While the car wears a previous-generation Focus ST bodykit, there’s a big giveaway that it’s no ordinary model – check out the giant scoop on the bonnet, which feeds the modified 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine with cool air.

Twin bonnet air vents, harking back to the Escort RS Cosworth, will replace the scoop on the production car. Blistered wheelarches, a rear wing and a low front splitter will also feature.

With a larger turbocharger, remapped electronics and a bigger intercooler, the 2.5-litre Focus ST-derived unit will produce around 280bhp, enabling the RS to sprint from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph.

It’s likely that Ford will equip the newcomer with a clever electronic differential, giving the front-wheel-drive layout excellent traction.

A six-speed manual box will be fitted, but Ford’s new twin-clutch VW DSG-style Powershift transmission could appear, too. The RS will go on sale next year, priced around £25,000. A concept will be revealed at the British Motor Show in London in July.

It’s the machine that hot hatch fans have been waiting for... so say hello to the new Ford Focus ST!

These official images reveal the five-door hot hatch and we can also show what the revised three-door will offer, too.

The revised Focus range hits UK showrooms in January, but the ST won't join the line-up until March. These pictures reveal the dramatic revisions that aim to keep the car at the top of the class.

The new car will have a lot to live up to - fast Fords of the past still have a big following (click here for a few of our favourites).

Mondeo-style headlamps are the most obvious change, yet look closely and you’ll also see a sporty honeycomb grille. The front bumper has integrated foglamps and a huge air intake that takes its inspiration from the Fiesta replacement, the Verve, a concept version of which debuted at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Ford’s designers have ditched the rubbing strips fitted to the current Focus for a clean new look. And at the back, there’s a revised tailgate with a sporty diffuser-style bumper designed to improve high-speed stability.

The comprehensive changes have been made to bring the best-selling model into line with Ford’s latest styling. The new Mondeo was the first production car to preview the firm’s ‘kinetic’ design language when it arrived earlier this year. Its look will be shared with the hotly anticipated Kuga compact SUV – due next May – and the forthcoming Verve.

Changes inside the Focus include new instruments and revised controls for the stereo and ventilation. Buyers will also be able to choose from a host of fresh extras, with keyless entry available as an option for the first time. Cars fitted with the handy set-up get a sporty ‘Power’ button on the centre console to start and stop the engine.

Although the ST’s styling has been changed, fans of the current model needn’t panic about its performance. Engineers are so confident in the outgoing hot variant that modifications under the skin have been kept to a minimum. “The Focus isn’t behind the times dynamically, so there’s no real need to make changes,” explained a spokesman for the company.

The newcomer therefore uses the same 2.5-litre turbocharged engine as before. With 222bhp on tap, the five-cylinder unit will propel the ST from 0-60mph in only 6.5 seconds.

Other manufacturers are toying with the idea of diesel power for their performance models. Only last week (Issue 985), we reported on Honda’s plans to introduce an oil-burning version of its Civic Type R. But a blue oval spokesman confirmed that the powerful 2.2-litre TDCi – the most likely engine choice for a hot diesel model – doesn’t fit under the bonnet of the Focus.

He also ruled out an estate version of the performance flagship. Although other countries in Europe offer sporty Focus load-luggers, demand in the UK is not sufficient to justify converting such a variant to right-hand drive.

The new Focus ST is due in dealers here in March, alongside facelifted versions of the coupé-cabrio and estate.

The existing line-up of ST, ST-2 and ST-3 models will continue, and prices have remained unchanged. The three-door ST will start from £17,995, with the flagship ST-3 costing £19,995. Five-door cars will command a premium of around £600.
