80742 Michelotto prepared seven of these little-known F40 GT's for an endurance racing scene that was recovering from years in the doldrums. Several more-or-less standard F40's had already contested 1992's inaugural Italian GT Championship, the regulations stipulating no modifications to the engine, suspension or brakes, those few changes that were permitted including fitting a safety rollcage and slick tyres. For 1993, the rules allowed considerably more development though and Michelotto were able to fit a number of LM-derived parts.
One car that had been used during the 1992 championship (74047) was modified over the winter of 1992/'93 while six more GT's were freshly built. Set up alterations included new suspension wishbones, spring and damper units, larger anti-roll bars, four-pot Brembo brakes and wider one-piece OZ wheels, all of which were sourced from the F40 LM. Output jumped to 560bhp, the turbo pressure having risen by 0.1 bar while a more efficient competition exhaust system was also fitted. A number of lighter and stronger LM body parts were used although the stock F40 nose with its retractable headlights and distinctive supplementary clusters was retained. Michelotto managed to shed 125kg of the production cars weight, most GT's being constructed over the winter of 1992/3, just a couple being built later. The regulations for 1994's Italian championship were largely unchanged, a further drop in ride height and some mild suspension mods being among the few changes sanctioned. Chassis numbers and race histories for the seven F40 GT's are indexed in Part 9.
