Is That Really A Snake Eating A Guy On The Alfa Logo?

Is That Really A Snake Eating A Guy On The Alfa Logo?

    Jason Torchinsky

    hg5o9djuxmv15sudaddg.jpg

Having a coat-of-arms as your car's badge has been popular for decades. There's lots of good ones out there, with interesting details — Cadillac's little ducks, for example — but only one has what appears to be a dragon-snake swallowing some poor bastard: Alfa Romeo.

Alfas are generally really lovely cars, and they invite close, lurid inspection. Which means that many of us have likely taken a good long look at an Alfa's badge and thought to ourselves, with the introspection of a philosopher, "What the fuck?"

    poou0jcbuo2rlpvnooke.jpg

Let's just break down what the badge looks like here: it's a bisected circle. The left half of the circle contains a white field with a red cross, and the right side has a large, stylized serpentine snake/dragon like beast, with a red... something in its mouth. Before I really paid attention, I had thought this object represented some manner of stylized flames or tongue, but closer inspection and a little research reveals exactly what it is: a human being.

Let's get the meaning of the the boring left half out of the way first: according to most sources, the white field with the red cross dates from the Crusades. The red cross was a standard used by Milanese soldiers (Alfas were originally built in Milan, you see) following Giovanni of Rho to the Holy Land. The white background came from the white undergarments they were forced to wear under their armor to protect themselves from the intense heat and sun of the Middle East.

Does that imply they normally didn't wear anything under their armor? Because that sounds insane.

That's the left half, and it generally makes sense. It's not too exciting, but how exciting does your logo have to be when right next to it a fucking dragon is chomping away at some guy?

    cerdgvbhzo1rf8pshvby.jpg

And about that dragon: it appears to be what's known as a Biscione, which is pretty much what you see there: a large, serpent-like snake or dragon, eating a human figure. That human figure, interestingly, is usually either a baby or an adult Moor or Muslim, likely from its Crusade-era roots.

The Biscione is normally associated with the House of Visconti of Milan, Alfa's home city. Even after the Viscontis lost power sometime around 1447, the Biscione remained as a symbol of Milan, and can be found in many places throughout the city.

It's not exactly clear exactly how or why the dragon/snake motif was created in the first place. One legend suggests that it's in reference to a dragon who was tormenting Milan at the beginning of the fifth century and was finally killed by Uberto, Squire of Angera. Uberto is also considered to be the start of the Visconti family. As you may guess, this particular origin story is suspected by many of being, just maybe, made up.

There's also the theory that the Viscontis just thought a big dragon eating a guy made you look badass, and that's hard to argue with.

Things get a little weirder when you dig deeper and find that it's possible the dragon isn't eating anyone at all, but rather orally birthing a human baby. Or maybe just vomiting up a kid — the distinction between giving birth out of your mouth and puking something up is really a pretty fine line, if you ask me.

I'm not sure what Alfa's official company line is on the identity of the little doomed figure being eaten (or birthed) by that dragon. They're kind of screwed either way with the two common interpretations: say it's a Muslim and they risk alienating a huge market, and if they say no, no, everyone calm down, it's just a baby, it's hard to see things getting much better.

    blj2ghu3ari1hstkokyd.jpg

Still, if you don't dwell too much on just who that poor dragon-lunch is, it's a pretty fantastic looking logo, even in today's highly stylized and streamlined form. I wouldn't mind seeing some more blatant dragon-eating-people motifs on their cars, either. I'm thinking maybe something nice and detailed and big that can go on the hood of a 4C, to make a sort of Italian Firebird?

Think about it, Alfa. You're already the only car maker with a guy being eaten on their badge — why hold back now?

    Questa è la mejo battuta:

Alfa and Omega: Fresh Starts, Strong Finishes - The Kiinote

    2015-alfa-romeo-4c-front-three-quarter-in-motion.jpg

I'm writing this column two days prior to departing for Motor Trend's fifth annual Best Driver's Car (sixth, if you count 2008's Best Handling Car), an exhilarating week full of mountain roads, a historic racetrack, and, yes, fast cars. Each year brings a new mix of mesmerizing metal (and carbon fiber and sometimes fiberglass, too), with every entrant promising the ultimate combo of speed, power, and agility. The last two years, the Porsche 911, with its sublime chassis and flat-six giddyup, handily snatched the title. Before that, it was Ferrari's enthralling 458 Italia -- to this day, the finest sports car I've driven and easily my favorite Italian exotic. Now, though, I'm not so sure. An hour ago I arrived at the office in Alfa Romeo's all-new mid-engine 4C sports coupe, the car responsible for reintroducing the boutique brand to America. I parked and shut off the engine, but my adrenaline was still pumping and my face still beaming from the thrill ride 30 miles earlier through the hills of Malibu. I'm pretty sure the 4C's muffler-less $500 Racing Exhaust woke up every slumbering resident within a 10-mile radius. While the Alfa's hot Brembos and force-fed I-4 were crackling on cooldown, I was just trying to catch my breath. The $55,195 Modena-built 4C is Ferrari fantastic at Corvette cost. 2015-alfa-romeo-4c-front-end-in-motion.jpg Whenever I gaze at the 4C, I can't help but think of Al Pacino in "Scarface": "Say hello to my little friend." At 157.5 inches long and just under 2500 pounds, the 4C is about as compact and light as cars come these days -- for comparison, a Miata measures 0.2 inch shorter and 113 pounds heavier. And like Pacino's "little friend," the Alfa's compactness belies its force. Its appropriately tiny 1.7-liter I-4 makes 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and sounds like a dishwasher running on the heavy cycle, only with the door left open, whooshing and whirling with every spool-up and blow-off of the turbo. It's controlled chaos snugly packaged two feet behind your back. And it couldn't be more endearing. The kid in you gets to enjoy extended recess, but instead of playing kickball on the playground, you're flying down the road in an oversized go-kart capable of 160 mph. At which point you hit the gas pedal harder. Fully spur the direct injectors and the lithe Italian will launch from 0 to 60 mph in as quick as 4.1 seconds (we've tested three 4Cs) and through the quarter mile in as quick as 12.7 seconds at 106.7 mph. A 505-hp Camaro Z/28 is just a tenth quicker to 60; a 355-hp CLA45 AMG no quicker to the quarter. Indeed, the 4C is as speedy as it looks. No surprise, reallyØ—with those 237 horses, its weight-to-power ratio (10.4 lb/hp) is better than that of the 320-hp BMW M235i (10.9). Better still: Sans power assist, the leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel relays all pertinent road conditions, illustrating the definition of communicative steering. All of which makes relishing the race-inspired suspension that much better. Of the three 4Cs we've tested, the one with the $2400 Track Package put down the best numbers: lateral acceleration of 0.98 g and the figure eight in 24.3 seconds. (Last BDC's BMW M6 and Aston Martin Vanquish each recorded 24.4.) By the time you read this, our 2014 BDC competition will have wrapped and a new champ will have been crowned. Whether that's the 4C remains to be seen -- you can find out in our November issue and online before long. But I'd be shocked if this Alfa didn't post a mega upset.

  7. 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition Track Package First Test - Motor Trend

While an impressive performer, a treat on the track, and at home on glass-smooth surfaces, the Alfa 4C is ultimately tough to live with on a daily basis. Though the Alfisti will no doubt flock to it, I'm not convinced the buyers Alfa needs to give it a viable market in the U.S. will. That said, with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles throwing money at new rear-drive platforms for Alfa Romeo, here's hoping this one sticks.

DETROIT -- Chrysler Group, rolling out sales of the Alfa Romeo 4C sports car in the U.S., has picked Reid Bigland to lead the Italian sports car brand’s return to North America.Bigland, 47, one of the rising stars at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, had been head of the company’s fast-growing Ram Truck brand. Robert Hegbloom, 50, director of Ram, will take over for Bigland, Chrysler said today in a statement. Bigland’s post at Alfa is a new position, and he retains his responsibilities as head of Chrysler’s U.S. sales and CEO of Chrysler Canada. The moves are effective immediately."The addition of Alfa Romeo to (Bigland's) portfolio of responsibilities is an indication of how committed we are to the establishment of this brand in the North American market, a process that has already started with the introduction of the Alfa Romeo 4C," Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said in the statement."Much more is expected from this brand in the next few years as outlined in our five-year plan presented on May 6, 2014, and Reid's seniority and experience are ideal for the significant task that is now getting underway."Alfa Romeo withdrew from the U.S. in 1995 when the 164 sports sedan reached the end of its production run, ending a presence in North America dating back to the 1950s.New investmentMarchionne plans to invest $5 billion to overhaul Alfa’s lineup and position it as a competitor to BMW, Audi, Cadillac and other sporty luxury brands.Last year, Alfa Romeo sold just 74,000 cars globally, the lowest level since the 1960s. Marchionne’s ambitious growth plan for Alfa calls for volume to reach 400,000 globally by 2018, with the United States becoming one of the largest markets.A new midsize sports sedan is due in the U.S. by 2016, and seven other new Alfas are in the company’s five-year plan.Hegbloom’s major challenge will be to establish the Ram brand in the commercial market and compete with General Motors and Ford. Ram is launching two vehicles, the ProMaster full-size van and the ProMaster City, a small utility van, to compete with the Ford Transit Connect.

Holy Crap There's An Ultra-Rare Maserati MC12 Race Car On Public Roads

The Maserati MC12 Corsa isn't just rare, it might as well not exist. It's so rare that if I saw one anywhere, even at a show, I'd expect an entire herd of unicorns to go marching right past. Now someone's gone and made one road-legal, and they're driving it around California.

In truth, Maserati made 12 examples of the MC12 Corsa, itself a racing version of the impossible MC12. And the MC12 was an even rarer Maserati-fied version of the Ferrari Enzo, itself a Hope Diamond of a car.1

To put it all in perspective, there are more than eight times as many McLaren F1s, traditionally considered the holy grail of car-spotting. So to have video of one not only driving, but on public roads, is just nuts.

That's what we in the business call "goddamn special."

What you'd need to do to certify this not just for public use, but for American public use, must've been downright Herculean, and even then I can't imagine how it got past the notoriously-difficult New York State DMV. You'd need to raise the suspension, fix the fuel system so that you could actually put a regular fuel pump in it, surely change the exhaust, and probably fiddle with the lights, not to mention a whole bunch of other small details most don't even think about.

And yet I still can't believe what I'm watching. The 755-horsepower V12 engine sounds like it's not silenced at all, the steering wheel has a giant screen in the middle for all the racing information, and you can hear every little pebble in the world, for lack of sound deadening. And as for the "raised suspension," I imagine they raised it from 1 millimeter off the ground, to maybe 1.1 millimeters off the ground.

New Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA to target BMW M3

    alfa-giulia-gtaexcl_0.jpg?itok=YZf0xfhX

    13 Aug, 2014 12:15pm Jack Rix

Our exclusive image shows how a new Alfa Giulia GTA supersaloon could look

When Alfa Romeo launches its new Giulia saloon late next year, it will have its work cut out tempting buyers away from the BMW 3 Series.

But the brand has a secret weapon up its sleeve. Straight from launch it will show its intent with a storming 500bhp Giulia GTA, designed to blow the 425bhp BMW M3 out of the water, and we can show you what it looks like

Our exclusive image is based on inside information and is the most accurate view yet of how the GTA will look. Plus, if you replace the prominent bumpers and vents with more restrained bodywork, it shows how the standard Giulia will shape up, too.

Classic cues from its 156 GTA forebear will include the arrow-head front grille and telephone-dial alloys, making it instantly recognisable as an Alfa, while bonnet vents and a deep front bumper with integrated foglights add aggression.

Alfa Giulia GTA: 480bhp+ from 3.0-litre biturbo V6

Perhaps most significant is the decision to fit hidden rear handles, giving the four-door the look of a two-door and suggesting a Giulia coupe isn’t in the product plan. Power will come from a version of the Maserati Ghibli’s Ferrari-built 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, producing between 480bhp and 520bhp – the exact figure is yet to be decided.

It’s also understood that Alfa’s brand new rear-wheel-drive platform will ensure the Giulia is lighter than the 1,635kg M3, thanks to the use of high-strength steels and aluminium sections. As a result, performance will eclipse the BMW’s, with a 0-62mph sprint time of under four seconds.

To help tame all that power, expect a limited-slip differential and a dual-clutch gearbox as standard. While the Giulia GTA is likely to cost close to £50,000, the standard car should start from as little as £22,000, and will feature a more wallet-friendly line-up of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, ranging from a 118bhp to 200bhp. A hot 350bhp six-cylinder diesel, based on the Ghibli unit, is believed to be in development, too.

The Giulia will kick off an unprecedented five-year expansion plan for Alfa, which will include an Audi Q5-rivalling mid-size SUV in 2016.

Exclusive: Ferrari working on a new supercharged engine with electric turbocharger

[h=1]Exclusive: Ferrari working on a new supercharged engine with electric turbocharger[/h]Published by Andrew Christian @andrew4wheels Google+ | Monday July 28, 2014

    2014_ferrari_california_t_engine__large.jpg

According to our sources located in Italy, Ferrari is currently working on a supercharged engine that also features an electric turbocharger. The Italian manufacturer wants to completely eliminate the turbo lag as the new electric turbocharger provides staggering power when starting off.

Still, this is not something new as Audi already revealed its RS5 TDI Concept, while Mercedes-AMG head of powertrain development Jochen Martin Schmid said that the company is considering electric turbochargers. Ferrari said back in June that they will reduce their CO2 footprint and lower CO2 emissions across the range by 20 percent by 2012.

If today Ferrari’s average CO2 figure stands at 270 grams, this number is expected to drop by three percent each year on average. The latest model from Ferrari, California T, comes with a new 3.8-liter V8 turbocharged engine that delivers 560 hp (412 kW) ad 556 lb-ft (755 Nm) of torque. As a result, the California T hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.6 seconds, while top speed is in excess of 300 km/h or 186 mph.

Thanks to the new electric turbochargers, the new supercharged engines from Ferrari are expected to deliver more power as well as lower fuel consumption.

There is also a rumor that the facelifted Ferrari 458 Italia will drop the naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 in favor of the turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 engine used by the California T.

According to our source, one thing is for sure: the V12 engines from Ferrari will remain naturally aspirated and the Italian carmaker will use its new technology on smaller powerplants.
