Claiming a 35% drop in orders, Tyco Electronics has decided to temporarily lay-off 230 people at its Portuguese plant of Évora. The measure, formerly expected to involve 536 out of a total workforce of ~1.600, will become effective from Jan. 16th for a period of six months. The European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA, representing ~3,000 companies with a total of 3 mill. employees) has called on national governments and the EC to give the industry loan guarantees of over 25 billion € to prevent keep the companies afloat. According to the association, with crisis expected to hit companies’ cash flows in February and March at the latest, as many as 500 suppliers could face bankruptcy in the coming months if no action is taken.

The most critic situation regards the two French giant carmakers (Renault and PSA) that, as we already said, are going to totally axe more than 8,400 jobs. Gloomy scenario also for Tyco axing 620 employees further to the closure of the plants at Chapareillan (Rhône-Alpes) and Val-de-Reuil (Haute-Normandie) and Molex axing 330 jobs following the closure of its plant at Villemur-sur-Tarn. § Valeo (one of the world's top automotive suppliers with 54,000 employees in 27 countries) has just announced 5,000 layoffs worldwide, of which 3,400 in Europe (1,600 in France).
