Leapmotor files for B01 electric sedan, to debut at Shanghai auto show The B01 is 4,770 mm long and will be the second model in Leapmotor's B-series. Leapmotor is targeting monthly sales of more than 40,000 units of the B-series models. Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) has made a regulatory filing for a new all-electric sedan, the B01, as it begins to expand its B-series lineup. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released a new regulatory catalog yesterday for public comment, and the Leapmotor B01 is included. The public can submit feedback between April 17-23. Entry into the catalog is the last major regulatory process by which a model can be allowed to be sold in China. The Leapmotor B01 has three pages in the catalog, all of which are battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions, and are manufactured at Leapmotor's two production sites in Jinhua, Zhejiang province. The all-electric sedan measures 4,770 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width and 1,490 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm. These dimensions are smaller than those of the C01, Leapmotor's C-class sedan, which measures 5,050 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width and 1,515 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm. The B01 has a curb weight of 1,625 kg, 1,660 kg and 1,711 kg, respectively, and supports a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour. The model is powered by a single electric motor, with two motor options available, with peak power of 132 kW and 160 kW, respectively. The B01 is powered by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from Gotion High-tech, CALB, and Zenergy. The model supports the option of LiDAR for the roof. The B01 will make its debut at the Shanghai auto show, which will begin on April 23, Leapmotor said on Weibo today. The B01 will be the second model in Leapmotor's B-series, the first of which, the B10, just went on sale on April 10. Leapmotor's main selling models are the C-series, which include the C01 sedan, as well as the C10, C11, and C16 SUVs (sport utility vehicles). The B-series appears to be aimed at a market that is less expensive than the C-series. On March 10, Leapmotor management said in a media interview that it was confident it would see monthly sales of more than 40,000 units of the B-series. Leapmotor delivered 37,095 vehicles in March, up 154.65 percent from 14,567 in the same month last year, and up 46.70 percent from 25,287 in February, according to figures it released earlier this month. Leapmotor is targeting sales of 500,000 to 600,000 units in 2025, its founder, chairman and CEO, Zhu Jiangming, said on March 11. The company delivered 293,724 vehicles in 2024, up 103.76 percent from 2023. (cnevpost)

China sets world’s strictest EV battery standard: “No Fire, No Explosion” rule effective July 2026 China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has announced new mandatory national safety standards for electric vehicle batteries that will take effect on July 1, 2026. The updated regulation GB38031-2025 “Safety Requirements for Power Batteries of Electric Vehicles” represents the world’s first standard requiring batteries to prevent fire and explosion even after internal thermal runaway occurs. The most significant change in the new standard is the thermal diffusion test requirement. While the previous standard only required a warning signal five minutes before fire or explosion, the updated regulation mandates that batteries must not catch fire or explode, even during thermal runaway events. Additionally, any smoke generated must not harm vehicle occupants. The standard also introduces new tests, including: Bottom impact testing to evaluate battery protection capabilities when the underside experiences a collision Fast-charging cycle safety testing requires batteries to withstand 300 fast-charging cycles without fire or explosion during subsequent short-circuit tests Industry experts believe these stringent requirements will significantly enhance consumer safety while accelerating industry consolidation. Leading manufacturers like CATL claim they have already developed technologies that meet the new standards. CATL states that their first-generation No Thermal Propagation (NP) technology has been produced since 2020. “The new standard will effectively reduce the risk of power battery fires after collisions in new energy vehicles, better protecting consumers’ lives,” said a CATL representative, emphasising that meeting these requirements demands collaboration between automakers and battery manufacturers. The timing of this announcement follows closely behind a high-profile accident involving a Xiaomi SU7 electric vehicle that caught fire after a collision in March. However, the cause of that incident remains under investigation. Industry experts believe the new national standard safeguards battery safety through rigorous testing protocols, significantly alleviating public concerns about spontaneous combustion risks in electric vehicles. While these regulations may increase R&D costs for small and medium-sized enterprises and potentially trigger short-term market consolidation, the industry’s long-term benefits are substantial. Enhanced safety performance will ultimately reduce hidden costs related to insurance and maintenance, creating greater value opportunities across the sector. (CNC)

The probability of Nio, Xpeng and Li Auto surviving independently in the next three years is zero, China’s automotive analyst says In the Tencent News panel called Auto Market Hot Topics+, Professor Zhu Xican from the School of Automotive Engineering at Tongji University discusses the future of the three EV startups Nio, Xpeng and Li Auto. According to Zhu, if none of the three EV startups go bankrupt, their probability of existing independently is zero. “They must merge, restructure and cooperate as soon as possible,” Zhu adds. According to Zhu, any EV maker that sells under 2 million vehicles a year will not survive, as the scale would be too small and R&D costs would be too high. “If the R&D investment is small, the technological progress will stop. With such high R&D investment and such a small output, you will die,” Zhu says. The analyst sees Li Auto as a current winner who managed to avoid big mistakes. Xpeng relies too much on software and ignored the hardware side of the vehicle in the early stage, which led to product problems, but it seems this was fixed with introdcing Wang Fengying (former CEO of Great Wall Motor) and Xpeng’s CEO. Nio’s William Li is too concerned about creating “atmosphere” and doesn’t focus enough on R&D investments. Another panelist attending the Auto Market Hot Topics+ was Li Yanwei, a member of the Expert Committee of the China Automobile Dealers Association. Li believes that if Li Auto can succeed in the electric vehicle market, its future development will have an advantage over the other two EV startups. “If new all-electric models can replicate their success in the EREV market, Li Auto will be able to expand its market share further and increase sales and profits.” Li believes there are currently too many brands in the EV market that need to die. “I don’t think there will be many companies that can survive, because after all, the elephant in the room is called BYD. I don’t think other small companies will have much value in existence.” Another analyst, Yiran, argues that if we agree to the 2 million sales volume being the survival threshold, with about 20 million future EV sales per year in China, only ten companies can survive. “The Future of most of the current brands is uncertain.” The Xiaomi SU7 has become a sales phenomenon, not only because of its appealing design and features but also because consumers perceive the Xiaomi brand as “big and powerful.” With substantial financial backing and a presence across multiple industries, Xiaomi gives buyers confidence that the brand is here to stay. As a result, customers are less concerned about the company folding or the car’s resale value. Its status drives Tesla’s strong sales as a globally recognized electric vehicle brand. Many consumers buy Tesla models to follow the trend, and used car dealers are happy to purchase them due to their high resale value and profitability, Yiran concludes. The Tencent News-hosted panel concluded that in a market dominated by BYD’s cost control and Tesla’s scale, the “Big Three” China EV startups, Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto, must either consolidate, reinvent their tech edge, or face extinction. As Zhu Xichan starkly put it, “The probability of independent survival is zero.” (CNC)

China’s MIIT tightens regulations on autonomous driving features, banning key functions China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has introduced strict regulations for autonomous driving technologies following recent safety concerns, effectively reshaping how automakers can develop, test, and market these features. At an April 16 meeting on intelligent connected vehicle management, MIIT officials outlined comprehensive restrictions in a document that has since circulated within the industry. The new guidelines target several key areas of autonomous driving development and marketing. Public beta testing programs are now prohibited The ministry has banned the standard industry practice of using “pioneer user” beta testing programs. Officials stated that “public testing, whether with thousands or tens of thousands of users, must go through official approval channels.” This effectively ends the smartphone-inspired approach where automakers recruited early adopters to test and provide feedback on new autonomous driving features. Marketing terminology is strictly regulated Automakers must now avoid terms like “automatic driving,” “autonomous driving,” “intelligent driving,” or “advanced intelligent driving” in their marketing materials. Instead, they must use “L(number) assisted driving” and strictly adhere to automation level classifications. Remote parking and summoning features banned Functions that operate without driver supervision—including valet parking, one-touch summoning, and remote control features—are now prohibited. The ministry emphasised that “these functions will not be approved for products” as they cannot ensure driver engagement and operational safety. Strict hands-on requirements enforced The regulations mandate that driver monitoring systems cannot be disabled and must detect when drivers remove their hands from the steering wheel. If hands-off detection exceeds 60 seconds, the system must implement risk mitigation strategies such as slowing down, activating hazard lights, or pulling over. OTA updates are heavily restricted MIIT criticised frequent over-the-air updates, stating that one goal of the new regulations is to “reduce frequent OTA updates and improve version risk management.” Emergency updates will now require recall procedures and the State Administration for Market Regulation approval. Industry observers note these regulations come shortly after a high-profile incident involving three fatalities, which has prompted authorities to prioritise safety over rapid technological advancement. The timing, just before the Shanghai Auto Show, where autonomous driving features were expected to be heavily promoted, signals the government’s determination to regulate this sector more stringently. The new rules particularly impact companies that have positioned themselves as autonomous driving leaders, including Huawei, Xpeng, Li Auto, and Nio. They could potentially benefit traditional automakers that have taken a more cautious approach to autonomous technology. As of press time, the China stock market automotive sector is trending downward, with BAIC falling nearly 7%, Seres dropping more than 5%. (CNC)
