  4. Turkish EV maker Togg expands lineup, eyes Germany debut in late 2024 The T10F fastback joins the startup's debut model, the T10X SUV, as Togg looks to expand into Europe. LAS VEGAS -- The Turkish EV startup Togg will double the size of its lineup by adding the T10F fastback, which will be sold alongside its debut model, the T10X SUV. Starting in late 2024 the company, which was founded in 2018 and currently sells only in its home market, aims to start selling both models in Germany, beginning with the SUV. Togg also plans to quickly add sales in other European markets, including France, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. The company did not provide timing or a cadence of the debuts in the other four markets, but it has set a goal of having 1 million vehicles on the road across Europe by 2032. "The launch of the T10F marks a defining moment for Togg, showcasing our unwavering commitment to transform the mobility landscape," the company's CEO, Gurcan Karakas, said in a release. Togg didn't release prices for the T10F, but they are expected to align with the SUV, which starts at the equivalent of 45,000 euros for the base model and rises to 57,320 euros for the long-range variant. Togg debuted a near-production version of the T10F at the CES technology show here Tuesday. It is the third consecutive appearance at the show for the company, which prefers to call its models "smart devices." Like the SUV, the fastback is a compact-sized model. Both models are made on Togg's C-segment (compact) platform. The T10F will have three variants -- two rear-wheel drive and one all-wheel drive. The RWD models offer a range of either 350 or 600 km while the AWD derivative's range is 530 km, according to the company's in-house testing based on WLTP guidelines. The AWD variant offers the model family's best performance as its dual electric motors provide 320 kilowatts (the equivalent of nearly 430 hp), which helps propel the T10F from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds. The RWD models have a 160 kW (215 hp) single electric motor. All variants have a drag coefficient below 0.23. The RWD models will be offered with a battery capacity of 52.4 or 88.5 kilowatt hours. The AWD version also has an 88.5-kWh battery. All three variants can get charged from 20 to 80 percent in 28 minutes and each can be used as an external power supply. Customers have the option of picking V1 or V2 equipment options, with V2 enabling more advanced autonomous features and safety systems, the company said. Aiming for a top safety score Togg uses a monocoque chassis made of advanced high-strength steel to help protect occupants and the key components such as the battery pack. The company said the model has been engineered to achieve EuroNCAP's top safety rating of five stars. To get to that level the T10F will offer a suite of advanced driver assistance systems that includes intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality that works in conjunction with a traffic sign detection system; lane-keeping capability and lane-departure warning; a surround-view camera; blind spot and driver attention warning systems, and automatic parking assist. The T10F will also feature Togg’s Rush Hour Pilot, which provides hands-free control of the car in heavy traffic at speeds of up to 15 kph (less than 10 mph) as long as there is a vehicle in front. This feature is available on T10F models with the V2 equipment level. The fastback has a 2890 mm wheelbase, ground clearance of 155 mm, and weighs between 1939 and 2215 kg, depending on the specification. Togg said that the design of the T10F and T10X are the result of its design studio's collaboration with the Italian styling specialist Pininfarina. The silhouette and body lines of the T10F mirror that of the T10X, but the creative team adjusted the maximum height and overhangs of the fastback to give it more sporty proportions. (ANE)

  6. Fiat 500e output in Italy falls short as buyers wait for incentives, union says Fiat's Turin plant made only 77,000 500e models last year after forecasting output of more than 90,000. MILAN -- Stellantis produced fewer full-electric Fiat 500e cars in Italy than planned last year, the FIM CISL union said, as buyers waited for the government to roll-out purchasing incentives for electric vehicle. Stellantis, home to brands including Fiat, Peugeot and Citroen, made 751,384 vehicles in Italy last year, up 9.6 percent from 2022, FIM CISL leader Ferdinando Uliano said during the union's annual press conference on Stellantis' production in Italy. The increase was driven by commercial vehicles, which helped to outweigh a 49 percent drop in the production of Maserati sports cars and the impact of a 20-day halt in production at the Turin plant that manufactures the 500e in the final part of the year. Only 77,000 500e cars were made last year, against the more than 90,000 forecast at the start of 2023. Uliano said EV incentives the government announced several times last year, but has yet to implement, prompted buyers to hold off, adding he expected them to be rolled out soon. A lack of charging infrastructure is also curbing the EV market, the union added in a statement. Sales of electric cars in Italy account for only around 4 percent of the total, compared with the European average of about 14 percent. Uliano said the eventual rollout of the buying incentives should provide a boost this year, and the launch of the 500e in the United States should also help lift its production. In December, the government said it planned to allocate 930 million euros ($1 billion) to help lower-income householders buy cleaner cars, such as EVs and hybrids, produced in Italy. While the incentives aim to support demand by covering part of the cost of the purchase, Uliano said the government had reassured unions that they would translate into increased production at some of Stellantis's plants in Italy. The government has also said it wants to lift domestic production of cars and vans to at least 1 million a year by 2028. To that end, Rome will work to encourage other automakers to manufacture in Italy, where Stellantis is currently the sole manufacturer, Urso said. (ANE)

  8. VW cuts prices, revises trim levels on ID electric-car lineup Lower-priced versions of the ID3, ID4, ID5 and ID7 are now available in France, Belgium, Italy, Norway and other European countries, as VW seeks to compete better with Tesla and other EV makers. The Volkswagen brand has cut prices and revamped its trim offerings on its ID line of full-electric vehicles to boost sales in France, Belgium, Italy and several northern European countries. VW's local subsidiaries and importers announced the changes at the end of December and this week. VW said the revisions to its ID lineup "will enable us to achieve our ambitious business goals." "With our clear pricing strategy, we continue to focus primarily on the quality and attractiveness of our products," a VW spokesperson told Automotive News Europe on Friday. Additional market-specific offers are geared to the country-specific requirements and needs of customers, VW said. ”Individual markets determine what pricing or promotions to offer, the spokesperson said. The price cuts come despite VW Group CEO Oliver Blume saying last year that the automaker would not get into a price war in Europe with Tesla, the region's top-selling BEV brand, after Tesla cut prices sharply on the Model 3 and Model Y. "We have a clear pricing strategy and are focusing on reliability. We trust in the strength of our products and brands," Blume told Frankfurt Allgemeine Sonnetagszeitung in January 2023. Many experts are forecasting that demand for EVs will slow, as consumers balk at high prices and a still-developing charging network, and automakers struggle to match the profitability of internal-combustion cars. VW Group executives said in October that EV orders had slowed significantly in 2023, although the automaker said at the time that it would stick to its EV pricing despite cuts by rivals. The ID4 is now priced at 43,990 euros in France in the new ID trim. It was launched in France at more than 51,000 euros. VW in November cut shifts at its huge EV factory in Zwickau, Germany, in the face of reduced demand for EVs. The factory, which has an annual capacity of 360,000 units, builds the ID3, ID4, ID5, Audi Q4-E-tron and Cupra Born EVs. French EV incentives targeted In France, the new prices and trim lines mean that nearly all versions of the ID3 compact hatchback and the ID4 and ID5 midsize SUVs will be eligible for a government EV bonus of 5,000 to 7,000 euros in 2024, VW said in a news release. The VW models will have two new trim lines, ID and Life Max. The VW ID3 Pro with a 58 kilowatt-hour battery, for example, is available in ID trim level for 39,990 euros; with a 77 kWh battery, it is 44,310 euros. The previous lowest-price version was the Pro Performance, at 42,990 euros. The ID4 in ID trim starts at 43,990 euros. When the ID4 was launched in France last year, it started at more than 51,000 euros, although VW offered a rebate to buyers last autumn that cut the price to about 44,000 euros. The lowest-price ID5 (ID trim) starts at 50,500, VW said, while the Life Max trim starts at 51,500, which VW says is 8,150 euros less than the roughly equivalent 2023 Pro Performance trim but with more options --- for a net benefit to buyers of 11,260 euros. “The complete overhaul of the ID range demonstrates Volkswagen's ambition to offer very competitive models on the electric market in France,” Dorothee Bonassies, VW brand director in France, said in the release this week. The ID3 compact hatchback will start as low as 358,000 Norwegian krona (31,700 euros), Norway's VW importer Moller said. VW has trailed other automakers in EV sales in France, the second-largest electric vehicle market by volume in Europe. In 2023, VW sold 4,791 ID3s, making it the 84th most popular model overall and 13th-best-selling EV, according to figures from the PFA industry group. The ID4 ranked 98th overall and 16th among EVs, with 3,911 sales. France’s best-selling EVs last year were the Tesla Model Y, with 37,124 sales; the Dacia Spring, with 29,761 sales; the Tesla Model 3, with 24,539 sales; the Fiat New 500, with 24,120 sales; the Peugeot e-208, with 22,700 sales; and the MG4, with 20,072 sales. Seeking growth in Norway In Norway, which has Europe’s highest EV penetration at 82 percent of new-car sales, VW needs to be more competitive, said Ulf Tore Hekneby, the CEO of importer Harald A. Moller. Volkswagen has fallen to third place in overall sales in Norway, he said, after years at the top. “We realize that although we have great and attractive models, we have not had equipment variants and prices that have been popular enough to climb all the way to the top, as we have succeeded in doing in the past,” Hekneby said in a news release. The ID3 will start as low as 358,000 Norwegian krona (31,700 euros) compared with more than 500,000 krona in the past, with the ID4 starting at 413,000 krona. Italian buyers have also seen changes to the ID lineup, starting Jan. 3. The new Pro Edition Plus versions of ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 are offered at 1,000 euros more than the Pro versions, but with 9,800 euros of added standard equipment, equivalent to an 8,800-euro advantage for customers, VW said. On the new ID.7, the Pro Edition Plus becomes the entry version, costing 1,300 less than the Pro, but with 6,350 euros worth of additional standard equipment, translating 7,650 euros in customer benefit, the company said. In Germany, VW's biggest European market, the automaker is funding EV subsidies after the government abruptly pulled its support for the incentives. The ID3 starts at 39,995 euros there, a lower price that was introduced early last year along with a face-lift for the model. According to reports, reductions total up to 7,735 euros on some ID models. The ID7 midsize sedan is the newest member of VW's EV lineup. New pricing in Belgium and Sweden Other countries where VW recently announced a reworked EV lineup and lower prices include Belgium and Sweden. The ID3 is now available for 39,990 euros and the ID4 for 39,649 euros in Belgium to take advantage of an EV bonus of 5,000 euros in the Flanders region, VW Belgium said, saying that prices had been “seriously revised downward” to reach the bonus threshold. Gert van Leeuw, director of VW Belgium, said that there would be an additional discount early this year on the ID3 to match the ones traditionally given at the Brussels auto show, so an ID3 will be available for 37,990 euros, or 32,990 euros with the Flemish EV bonus. In Sweden, VW has added two new trims to ID models, an “EU” base version and “Edition,” which adds features at a lower price to other trim levels. An ID3 Pro Performance Edition model, for example, is 460,000 krona (41,115 euros), compared with the Pro Performance model, which is 479,000 krona. An “EU” version of the ID3 has also joined the lineup, at 448,000 krona. Similar pricing applies to ID4, ID5 and ID7 models. (ANE) Auto Motor und Sport

  16. VW said to delay small EV volume production amid Euro 7 changes Softer Euro 7 anti-pollution rules mean small combustion-engine cars can now be sold for longer. BERLIN -- Volkswagen is delaying volume production of a new affordable battery-electric car because weaker Euro 7 anti-pollution rules mean that smaller cars with combustion engines will be allowed to be sold longer than anticipated, according to a German media report. The small EV, based on the ID.2all concept unveiled last March, is scheduled to go into full production in May 2026 instead of 2025, auto motor und sport reported. The production ID.2all will be sold at a base price of less than 25,000 euros ($27,200). The retail price will be higher than ICE rivals such as VW's own Polo that will be on the market at the same time. The Polo costs less than 22,000 euros in Germany. VW and other European automakers had anticipated that they would no longer be able to sell small ICE cars profitably by the end of the decade because of tough Euro 7 anti-pollution rules. After strong lobbying from the industry, EU countries have agreed not to change the existing Euro 6 test conditions and emissions limits for cars and vans, meaning that small ICE cars can continue to be built without costly upgrades that would make them unprofitable. However, the delay in volume production will put VW further behind European rivals such as Stellantis, which has launched the Citroen e-C3 full-electric small BEV that starts at 23,300 euros, and Chinese automakers that are targeting Europe with cheap electric cars. Production shake-up The ID2all's delay comes amid VW brand boss Thomas Schaefer's shake up of the automaker's production network in Europe to reduce costs. From now on, only 80 percent of the maximum forecast sales volume of a new model will be planned for production, Schaefer told auto motor und sport. VW's previous production planning included a buffer in case demand was higher than anticipated. For example, if the sales department estimated that they would sell 150,000 units a year of a new model, production was planned at 170,000 vehicles. Large overcapacities quickly arose when new orders collapsed, Schaefer said. He said if a new model had higher sales than forecast, the extra demand will be met by additional shifts. The new 80 percent planning is being used for the first time for production of the latest new Passat midsize model in Bratislava, Slovakia. "We will implement this for all future models and have already planned for it as part of the plant allocation," Schaefer said. (ANE)
