  1. Ford delays Spanish investments, citing 'revised outlook for Europe' Ford delays Spanish investments but will remain committed to Valencia plant. BARCELONA -- Ford said it is delaying its production investments in Spain, citing a "revised outlook for Europe" but said it remained committed to its plant in Valencia. The automaker will not ask for a share of Spain's EU pandemic relief funds to invest in the roll out of EVs by June 2025, Ford said on Wednesday. It said it will work with the authorities to identify other potential public funding as it moves to an all-electric fleet of passenger vehicles in Europe by 2030. In June, Ford said it will build its next-generation electric vehicles in Valencia. Ford did not give further details on its revised outlook for Europe. It said earlier this week it will cut a total of 3,000 salaried and contract jobs, mostly in North America and India. No jobs will be cut at its plant in Valencia for now, a Ford Spain spokesperson said, although the automaker has long said there will be some restructuring of its workforce as electric cars require fewer labor hours to assemble. Both UGT union and Spain's Industry Ministry played down the investment delay, noting that it does not affect Ford's plan to produce EVs in Spain. "The Spanish government maintains its commitment to support Ford in its current and future investments in Spain," the Industry Ministry said in a statement. Ford had applied in May for Spain's EU pandemic relief funds and had been allocated 106 million euros in a first provisional allotment but withdrew its application on Tuesday ahead of a deadline for potential changes, the Ministry said. The company picked the Valencia plant over its factory in Saarloius, Germany, for its latest EV investment. Ford said in June it has no plans to replace production of the Focus compact car at Saarlouis in 2025. Instead, the automaker said it will seek "alternative opportunities" for the Saarlouis factory, including selling it to another automaker. Ford plans to launch seven full-electric vehicles in Europe including three new full-electric passenger cars and four new electric vans. The first new EV will be a midsize crossover that will go into production at Ford's factory in Cologne, Germany, this year. It will use Volkswagen Group's MEB electric platform that underpins the VW ID4, among other VW Group models. Ford will build an electric version of the Puma crossover in Craiova, Romania, along with Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier electric vans. (ANE)

  8. Lucid Air Sapphire Lucid Group has unveiled its most powerful model to date, which also happens to be the world's most powerful production sedan, period. Making its public debut at the Quail Lodge during Monterey Car Week, the Lucid Air Sapphire is described by the automaker as the world's first luxury electric super-sports sedan. With three electric motors making more than 1,200 horsepower, carbon-ceramic brakes, an aerodynamic body kit and track-tuned suspension, this is probably going to give the Tesla Model S Plaid a good run for its money. Here are just a few key performance specs: 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds, 0-100 mph in under 4 seconds, the quarter-mile in under 9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 200 mph (322 km/h). Mind you, these figures can be achieved with no extra-cost equipment upgrades or protracted preconditioning routines. Mountains of power, clever torque vectoring applications The driving force behind these phenomenal numbers is Lucid's first three-motor powertrain featuring a new twin motor rear-drive unit and a single motor front-drive unit. Developed and manufactured in-house by Lucid, the motors incorporate the company's microjet stator cooling and wave winding. The twin rear-drive unit also introduces new heat exchanger technology and heightened coolant flow rate. The battery system is also upgraded for higher power and more precise thermal logic. As a result, the Lucid Air Sapphire delivers even more horsepower than the brand's most powerful dual-motor models, the 1,111-hp Air Dream Edition Performance and 1,050-hp Air Grand Touring Performance. With over 1,200 horsepower (the final power, torque and range ratings will be announced later), the Lucid Air Sapphire is not only the most powerful electric sedan in the world—it packs 180+ horsepower more than the Tesla Model S Plaid—it is the most powerful production sedan in the world, of any fuel type. Besides delivering mountains of torque to the rear axle, the twin rear-drive unit also enables torque vectoring, which has several interesting applications. Torque vectoring enables the rear motors to effectively pivot the rear of the vehicle by providing torque to the rear wheels in opposite directions to promote either turn-in or straight-line stability. While a brake-based setup and a rear-wheel steering system can also accomplish that, Lucid says its system is faster, quieter, and more seamless. For example, in tight corners, regenerative braking is applied on the inside wheel while powering the outside wheel, enhancing vehicle turn-in rotation with much quicker response times than RWS systems. Carbon ceramic brakes, upgraded suspension and staggered wheels To give the Air Sapphire a stopping power matching its sensational performance, Lucid fitted massive carbon ceramic brakes as standard—a $20,000 option on the Model S Plaid. The automaker says these brakes provide "exceptional stopping power and contribute to Lucid Air Sapphire's endurance in high-performance driving." Furthermore, the vehicle gets stiffer front and rear springs, unique damper settings, stiffer bushings, and a unique tuning for ABS, traction, stability control, and electronic power steering. The Lucid Air Sapphire rides on wider Aero Sapphire staggered wheels and specially developed Michelin PS4S tires sized 265/35R20 at front and 295/30R21 in the rear. The unique wheels feature removable carbon-fiber aero disk wheel covers, which are said to further optimize the aerodynamic efficiency of the car. From a styling perspective, you'll recognize the Lucid Air Sapphire thanks to its beefier yet subtle aero kit consisting of a front splitter, extended lip spoiler, generous rear diffuser, and 21-inch wheels, as well as the exclusive Sapphire Blue paint complemented by the standard Stealth Look package. Inside, the Air Sapphire introduces a new interior theme called Sapphire Mojave which includes new highly bolstered 18-way power sport seats, upholstered in black leather trimmed with black Alcantara and Sapphire Blue contrast stitching. While designed for dynamic driving, the seats are said to still provide "decadent" comfort, featuring heating, cooling and massage functionality. The headrests sport a debossed Lucid bear logo (a hint at the brand's Californian origins), the dash and doors are decorated with Mojave dark wood veneers, while the steering wheel and upper roof structure for the standard Glass Canopy roof are trimmed in black Alcantara. Finally, the on-screen display features a unique Sapphire theme with specially configured drive modes and performance settings. Lucid will offer the Air Sapphire as a limited-production model, with production scheduled to begin in the first half of 2023 and deliveries shortly after. The starting MSRP is $249,900 in the US ($325,000 CAD in Canada) and reservations will go live on August 23, 2022 at 9 am Pacific time. The Air Sapphire represents the launch of an entirely new performance-focused brand within Lucid, with additional Sapphire variants to be available for all future models going forward. (insideev)

  10. Great Wall Motor: Haval To Stop Sales of ICE Models By 2030 On August 22, Chinese automaker, Great Wall Motor announced that its sub-brand, Haval will halt the sales of fuel-powered vehicles by 2023. The announcement came at the brand’s new energy strategy conference in Beijing where the brand manager, Li Xiaorui, also revealed that NEVs will constitute 80% of its sales by 2025. This move by Haval means it joins BYD as the other Chinese to stop selling ICE vehicles. In March, BYD announced plans to stop the manufacture and sales of fuel-powered vehicles as it aimed to concentrate on pure electric and plug-in hybrid models. Since March, BYD has sold 100,000 models monthly for five consecutive months. The Chinese NEV market (pure electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, and plug-in hybrids) has seen rapid growth, which has challenged traditional automakers like Great Wall Motor. For example, the Haval H6 was the best-selling Chinese SUV from 2017 to 2021, but all that has changed since the BYD Song overtook it. From January to July 2022, the BYD Song sold 162,573 copies, the Tesla Model Y sold 133,666 units, while the Haval was only able to ship 123,496 units of the H6 SUV. With the ever-rising cost of fuel and the emergence of a strong market for NEVs, Haval has chosen to go the route of hybrid vehicles. Data from local agencies show that in July this year, NEVs accounted for 26.7% of domestic sales, with 428,000 pure electric vehicles and 136,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles sold. This amounts to a year-on-year increase of 109% for pure EVs and 187.2% for plug-in hybrid models. This growth spurt has made many traditional manufacturers look toward NEVs. Speaking at the conference, Mu Feng, President of Great Wall Motors, said: “Chinese auto companies usher in an opportunity unseen in a century.” “Today, the release of Haval New Energy will start a new journey of the Haval SUV king”, he said.
  11. Porsche sets high target for electric Macan sales The brand expects to build as many electric Macans as combustion versions. "We produce more than 80,000 units per year of the current generation. In the long term, we also plan to produce the all-electric Macan on this scale," production boss Albrecht Reimold told Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche. The full-electric Macan is scheduled to go into production before the end of next year at Porsche's factory in in Leipzig, Germany, where the current model is built. Sources have said that the electric Macan and its PPE platform sister model, the Audi Q6 e-tron, risk being delayed because parent Volkswagen Group is is behind in developing advanced new software. The Macan will be the sports car maker's second all-electric model after the Taycan coupe. In the first half, the Macan was Porsche's second best-selling model with 38,039 deliveries. The Cayenne SUV was the topseller with a global sales tally of 41,947. The Taycan's first-half sales were 18,877 customers after production of the electric couple was hit by supply-chain bottlenecks. Reimold said Porsche will build the electric Macan and the combustion engine version in parallel for about two years. (ANE)

  17. Tesla cuts waiting time for Model Y cars in China to a minimum of 4 weeks Tesla has cut the waiting time in China for some Model Y SUVs to as little as four weeks and 12 weeks for the Model 3 sedan. SHANGHAI -- Tesla has cut the delivery waiting time for its Model 3 and Model Y cars in China as it ramps up output at its Shanghai plant after upgrading production lines. The waiting time for the rear-wheel drive Model Y SUV is now four to eight weeks, while buyers of other versions of the SUV and Model 3 sedans need to wait for 12 to 20 weeks. Tesla previously said a buyer in China had to wait for eight to 24 weeks after placing an order for the best-selling models. Tesla confirmed the shortened waiting time, first disclosed on the company's Chinese website, citing the output ramp-up at its Shanghai plant as one of the reasons. The automaker usually delivers more of its cars produced in Shanghai to Chinese customers in the latter half of each quarter, which also brings an acceleration in deliveries, the company said. Tesla has completed a major upgrade of the production lines at its Shanghai plant, its most productive manufacturing hub, and is ramping up output with a target of making 22,000 Model 3 and Model Y cars combined each week. CEO Elon Musk has said production is a bigger challenge for the company than demand. Tesla is struggling to increase output in its Berlin and Texas plants, while production losses during a two-month COVID-19 lockdown in Shanghai hurt Tesla's profit margin in the second quarter. The company has stopped taking orders for its Cybertruck outside North America, and also for Model 3 Long Range vehicles in the United States and Canada, citing big delivery backlogs. (Reuters)
  18. Chinese EV automaker, BYD has continued its recent expansion efforts into Europe and the global market. The company recently announced its entry into Denmark where it appointed Nic. Christiansen Group as its nationwide dealer. BYD passenger cars will be gracing the Danish landscape for the first time, and the first BYD store will be situated in Copenhagen in Q4 of 2022. BYD has sped up its global expansion with its entry into Thailand, Australia, Isreal, and Singapore. The automaker has also established its presence in Sweden and Germany in addition to its entry into the Japanese market. In Japan, BYD introduced the BYD Seal, Yuan Plus, and BYD Dolphin. As with other markets, BYD chose a local partner to handle product support and customer service. BYD’s latest partner – Nic. Christiansen Group – is a prominent dealer in Denmark with a string of dealerships scattered across the country. The dealerships will offer sales and service support in addition to online resources for BYD passenger vehicles. In the announcement, the manufacturer also revealed that its Danish website will become operational in late August. Michael Shu, General Manager and Managing Director for BYD Europe, said: “It’s a great pleasure to partner with Nic Christiansen Group as we introduce our market-leading technology and some of our latest electric passenger vehicles to customers in Denmark. Further speaking, he said: “Customer service and product satisfaction is always our priority, and BYD values local partnerships to give customers high levels of localized sales and service support. I do believe that with a combination of BYD’s cutting-edge technology and Nic. Christiansen Group’s local knowledge and experience, we will achieve our shared vision of accelerating electrification in Denmark.” On the other hand, Niels Vrist Bertelsen, CEO of Nic. Christiansen Group, said: “We have the experience and the resources to lift BYD into the Danish market. The market is ready for a brand with BYD’s range and quality. I am convinced that our wish to be a Scandinavian key player in the car market, along with the mutual desire from BYD, makes us a good match, starting an effective long-term commitment to our markets.” Although the automaker didn’t specify which models will be offered in Denmark, it is believed that it will be any of the Yuan Plus, Seal, or Dolphin, or all three. This is not the first time BYD will be selling vehicles in Denmark as the company had sold electric buses in the country as far back as 2011. In 2021, the Chinese automaker marked its entry into the neighboring Norway, and in sold 1000 BYD Han models by the end of that year. (chinacarnews)
