Saturn acquistata da Penske Automotive Group: trattativa fallita

Confirming an earlier report this morning, General Motors has announced that it has reached a preliminary agreement with Penske Automotive Group for the sale of the Saturn brand. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but GM said that it expects the close the transaction in the third quarter of this year. The American automaker said that if completed, the deal will save more than 350 dealerships and 13,000 jobs at Saturn and its retailers in the United States. Under the agreement, Penske, the second-largest retailer in the States, would obtain the rights to the brand as well as certain other Saturn assets while GM would continue production, on a contract basis, of the Saturn Aura sedan, Vue SUV and Outlook SUV - yes, the Astra and Sky Roadster are 'dead'.

"This is the combination of two iconic teams: Saturn and Penske," said Saturn general manager Jill Lajdziak. "GM had the vision to create Saturn and has the desire to see it succeed in the future. There has been a groundswell of support for Saturn, with our retailers and owners urging us to save the brand," Lajdziak continued. "We heard their call loud and clear, and it inspired us as we worked to secure Saturn's future."

"Saturn has a passionate customer base and outstanding dealer network," said Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Automotive Group. "For nearly 20 years Saturn has focused on treating the customer right. We share that philosophy, and we want to build on those strengths."

Ecco bravo Nico. Ho una discussione in bianco aperta da un paio d'ore ad aspettare che riportassi la notizia e probabilmente sarebbe rimasta in bianco.

Ben fatto anche con le foto dei modelli.

In sostanza Penske non ha comprato la produzione e i modelli Saturn.

Ha comprato solo il marchio e alcune proprietà (suppongo una parte dei concessionari) e si è accordata sul vendere, su licenza e per un certo periodo, i tre modelli succitati, che verranno comunque prodotti da GM.

Detroit -- General Motors Corp. and Penske Automotive Group today confirmed details of a proposed transaction under which Penske would acquire the Saturn brand. If completed, the deal would save more than 350 dealerships and 13,000 jobs at Saturn and its retailers in the United States, and would preserve the customer-focused Saturn brand.

The proposed transaction is part of GM's rebuilding efforts outlined in the viability plan that was submitted to the U.S. government earlier this year. Under the terms in the memorandum of understanding, Penske would obtain the rights to the brand as well as certain other Saturn assets. GM would continue production, on a contract basis, of the Saturn Aura, Vue and Outlook.

Saturn began selling cars in 1990 and has sold more than 4 million vehicles. More than 80 percent of those vehicles are still in operation, according to data from R.L. Polk. Saturn has regularly scored among the industry leaders for non-luxury brands in customer satisfaction surveys.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of this year and is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Financial terms of the agreement will not be disclosed at this time.

Bene.. domanda da 1000 punti.. come faranno quando i modelli saranno da sostituire?

La Penske, da quello che ho capito, è un colosso della rivendita auto.

Praticamente vendono auto di qualsiasi marchio in Usa e in diversi altri paesi da entrambi i lati dell'atlantico. Quindi immagino che non si siano comprati la rete di vendita, al contrareio di quello che dicevo prima.

Venderanno quei 3 modelli con marchio saturn e poi col tempo potranno mettersi a rivendere qualsiasi altra cosa rimarchiata Saturn, magari ancora di orignie Gm, magari cinese, magari chissà.

Tutto sommato non credo che sarà un problema avere qualcosa da vendere.

In sostanza un re-badging di altre vetture, come d'altronde fanno da qualche anno..

Ma l'Aura non e' la Opel Vectra rimarchiata? E' prodotta in Germania? e ora che Opel ha sostituito la Vectra con l'Insignia? Scusate le troppe domande...

si era parlato di un abboccamento con renault per un rimarchiamento Samsung, comunque prodotte in Corea.

Penske stesso ha detto che per la scelta di un partener definitivo, c'è tempo (quindi non è GM)

Ma l'Aura non e' la Opel Vectra rimarchiata? E' prodotta in Germania? e ora che Opel ha sostituito la Vectra con l'Insignia? Scusate le troppe domande...

NOn è una Vectra.

C'è molta somiglianza tra il frontale della Aura e quello dell'ultimo restyling della Vectra, ma la Aura è molto più grande.

Credo che siano comunque entrambe basate sulla stessa piattaforma.

Se non ricordo male l'Aura è realizzata sul pianale della Signum, che è la variante a passo lungo di quello della Vectra.

Tornando a cosa succederà quando dovranno sostituire gli attuali modelli faccio notare che Renault, PSA e la stessa Opel del dopo-GM, sempre che non finisca in mano alla FGA, non vendono negli USA; giusto per fare tre esempi.

Nel caso di Opel/Magna, però, c'è un inghippo.

Forse non è stato riportato qui, ma uno dei vincoli (poco pubblicizzati) dell'accordo GM-Magna prevede che non possano essere vendute vetture Opel ne in Cina ne in Usa. 8)

Non a caso, fino a 10 giorni fa Magna era uno dei candidati all'acquisizione di Saturn.

Poi, pochi giorni prima dell'accordo, quando Magna era arrivata a conoscere i dettagli del potenziale accordo, gli austriaco-canadesi hanno dichiarato che avrebbero lasciato perdere Saturn, se con Opel fosse andata in porto. La scusa è che si sarebbero concentrati su una cosa soltanto. 8)

Per la serie, Magna voleva Opel anche per vendere le vetture Opel in America tramite il marchio Saturn. Gm gliel'ha leggermente messo in der posto.
