Oppure in alcuni paesi è possibile e in altri no ?

Cadillac ATS - Test in Europa [foto spia] - Quattroruote

2013 Cadillac ATS Confirmed for 2012 Detroit Show; Production Begins Next Summer

Cadillac’s current lineup encompasses just three models: the large Escalade SUV, the mid-size SRX crossover, and only one car, the CTS. More cars are, however, on the way. Last month, Cadillac unveiled the large XTS sedan at the L.A. auto show, and the brand confirmed today that its highly anticipated new compact sports sedan, the rear-drive ATS, will debut next month at the Detroit auto show. The 2013 Cadillac ATS is one of four global concept or production cars GM is planning to debut in the Motor City. Both the XTS and ATS will be rolling out of factories by next summer.

Smaller and sportier than the CTS, the ATS will take direct aim at the BMW 3-series. GM provided us with a teaser image of the ATS earlier this year; when we enhanced the photo (above), it revealed a profile that suggests the car will be a recognizable evolution of the CTS. It is expected to differ in certain details, however, including headlamps that stretch far into the fenders. The ATS also will feature capacitive-touch cabin controls, as seen in our most recent spy shots. Motivation likely will come from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the base ATS, with Cadillac’s 3.6-liter V-6 offered as a range-topper. An ATS-V model—powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with about 380 hp—also is planned to take on the mighty M3.

The rest of the details are still secret. But with the ATS’s official debut just weeks away, they won’t stay that way much longer.

2013 Cadillac ATS to Feature New 270-hp, 2.0-Liter Turbo Four

Cadillac has just revealed the first powertrain details for its all-new 2013 Cadillac ATS to journalists in Detroit. The rear-wheel drive 3 Series fighter will feature GM’s tried-and-true 3.6-liter V-6 on the top end, an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder in the middle and a new 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four cylinder in the base car when it debuts in late 2012.

Reporting from the Detroit Auto Show preview event, our Frank Markus tells us that the 2.0-liter turbo four is the star of the show. Based very loosely on the existing 2.0-liter turbo four that started life in the Chevrolet Cobalt SS and now powers the Buick Regal Turbo and Regal GS, Cadillac’s David Leone says the next-generation turbo 2.0 is entirely new and uses 95-percent new parts. Leone says the new 2.0 turbo will deliver an estimated 270 horsepower (same as the Regal) and 260 pound-feet of torque, 90-percent of which will be available between 1500 and 5800 RPM. That’s down from the 295 lb-ft the Regal GS delivers, but Leone promises the refinement and fuel economy are both up significantly, but no hard numbers are available yet. The engine features a twin-scroll turbo to eliminate lag and, Leone boasts, more horsepower-per-liter than a Lamborghini Aventador at 135 hp/L. See below for a deeper dive into the 2.0L’s tech.

If 270 horsepower just isn’t enough, Cadillac will also offer the CTS’ 3.6-liter V-6 in the ATS. In the larger, likely heavier CTS, the V-6 punches out 318 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque and a 6.1-second zero-to-60 mph time. As we anticipate the ATS will have less load to carry (Leone would only say that it’s “several hundred pounds lighter than competitors like the 3-series,” and that the front/rear weight distribution would be an ideal 50/50), we expect that time to drop. We can expect an uptick in fuel economy, as the current CTS sedan is rated at 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway with a manual and 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway with an automatic.

If fuel economy is what you’re really after, you’ll likely be looking at the base ATS and its naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Debuting on the new Malibu, the new 2.5-liter is based on the same second-generation Ecotec architecture that the 2.0-liter turbo uses. Features include a new combustion chamber, two-stage thermostat, variable volume oil pump, and new construction, as well as direct injection and variable valve timing. In the Malibu, GM has the engine rated at a certification-pending 190 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Much emphasis was placed on the engine’s noise and vibration, so we expect those areas to be significantly improved.

The ATS will offer both six-speed automatic and manual transmission, but Cadillac didn’t specify which engines will get the manual. There’s also no word yet on a high-performance V variant yet, but Cadillac developed this car at the Nurburgring, where it set an 8:28:09 lap time presumably with the V-6 engine, so we’re hoping a V is on the way.

Cadillac predicts that the all-new ATS will be its highest-volume seller, taking over from CTS and SRX, and along with the new XTS large sedan will bookend the CTS in the lineup. It will be built in Lansing, Michigan, alongside the CTS. GM will invest $190 million and add 600 jobs to the plant to get the ATS built.

Ecotec 2.0

Okay, this engine is described variously as “all-new” and “second-generation Ecotec with 95% new parts.” Here’s what’s the same: the square 86mm x 86mm bore and stroke dimensions and the cylinder bore spacing (saving gillions in new tooling costs), and some fasteners and miscellaneous cheap parts. Here are the big things that have changed:

  • The exhaust and intake have swapped sides of the engine
  • The exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head
  • The twin-scroll turbo, producing 20 psi of peak boost for short intervals, is supplied by Mitsubishi/Eaton, instead of Borg-Warner
  • The balance shafts are no longer carried by the block, which presented a source of radiated noise, but rather are gear driven off the crank in a separate module in the oil pan. This also contributed to shortening the overall engine length by a half-inch.
  • Maximum engine speed is up to 6800 rpm
  • The number of fasteners bolting everything to this engine is way up, so as to reduce noise or raise the frequency of noises to a level that is comfortable or easily attenuated.

Engines for North American consumption (this is a global powertrain) will be produced in Spring Hill, Tennessee initially, and eventually in Tonawanda, New York. We can expect output to rise in successive models, and you might be happy to know that the no-lift shifting introduced on the bad-boy Cobalt is supported on the Caddy. We asked if Cadillac would be branding this engine with unique nomenclature — we proposed “Eaststar,” since the turbo’s on the left side of the engine — but Cadillac declined my suggestion and says there’s no plan to name it. - Motor Trend technical director Frank Markus contributed to this report

... Le Alfa del futuro, Mazda a parte, dovrebbero essere ingegnerizzate là. Ma io dovrei comprare un'Alfa fatta dagli ingegneri della Chrysler ?
