Il periscopio: ma non e' un po' antiquato?

Oggi ho visto JAG. A un certo punto ho sentito ancora la vecchia frase: "si sposti a quota periscopica". Ma perche' non fanno un periscopio "a galleggiante filoguidato", che sale di almeno 50-100 metri con tanto di:

1) Telecamera e telecamera ad infrarossi

2) Bussola interna per rilevare lo spostamento rispetto all'asse del sottomarino

3) motorini laterali di posizionamento e di rotazione

Non capisco proprio perche'.

Opinioni in merito sono gradite.
