The supercar that almost wasn’t, and still might not be, the Lexus LF-A, recently underwent a special kind of exhibition in Milan during Fashion Week, and now it has been spotted once again in prototype form ahead of a rumored debut at October's Tokyo Motor Show.

The LF-A has been spotted testing on a number of occasions, so it's well past the 'pure concept' stage, but its production future still remains murky at best. The Japanese company's investment in the LF-A at the recent Milan Fashion Week, however, lends credence to the idea that it is in fact going to be built, and this latest prototype features some new elements have never been seen before.

First and foremost are the new tail-lamps, which are likely to be the actual production units. Also new is the smoother body and integrated diffusers at the front and rear of the car.

If the LF-A does go into production, it is expected to cost more than $200,000 and sport a 5.0L V10 engine rated at over 500hp (373kW). Limited production is also the name of the game, with only about 1,000 units expected unless demand proves high enough to support more. A hybrid variant should also be available, but it’s unknown how much power this version will have or what affect the heavy batteries and extra motor will have on handling and weight.

The car's front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, should allow for excellent weight distribution, however. Lexus has billed the concept version of the car as having a top speed in excess of 200mph, and we have no reason to doubt the production version will reach these limits if sold unrestricted.

The Lexus LF-A has been one long development project since it was shown as a concept car at the 2005 Detroit Motor Show. Even as Toyota Motor Corporation reported its first year-on-year loss of 436.9 billion yen (US$4.47 billion) last week, new spy pictures of a production LF-A have been snapped. It seems the car is very much on track for production then. This is not the one hidden under the race car body which was seen at the Nürburgring.

These spy photos reveal for the first time new rear lights as well as different body attributes to the production prototype first seen two years ago. Some exterior differences include the absence of a rear diffuser and in its place is a kind of mesh net. A new front bumper also appears.

The LF-A will feature a number of technical innovations to ensure its environmental friendliness as well as high performance credentials. Those in the know have constantly said the car will be powered by a V10 engine worth between 500hp (368kW) and 600hp (441kW).

Lexus will race a 4.8 liter V10 LF-A at the 24-hour Nürburgring which takes place from May 21.

A convertible/roadster LF-A concept was unveiled in January 2008 but there is currently no clarity on whether it will be produced or not. What is speculated a lot is that the production coupe will be shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show in preparation for its 2011 market launch.

Da qualche giorno era riapparsa anche la versione da corsa camuffata al solito modo..

The supercar that almost wasn’t, and still might not be, the Lexus LF-A, was recently spotted once again in prototype form ahead of a rumored debut at October's Tokyo Motor Show, and today information about the car's powertrain has emerged, confirming much of what was already suspected of the car.

The LF-A has been spotted testing on a number of occasions, so it's well past the 'pure concept' stage, but its production future still remains murky at best. The Japanese company's investment in the LF-A at the Milan Fashion Week, however, lends credence to the idea that it is in fact going to be built, and the continuous stream of prototypes tracking the Ring go a step further. Today news of a tie-up with Lotus for the next Esprit takes the production of a V10 engine into the realm of reality, and on its coattails comes a report from AutoExpress.

The LF-A's powertrain has previously been speculated as a 5.0L V10 engine rated at over 500hp (373kW), and the latest report says it will be over 550hp (410kW) and capable of a top speed of 218mph. Limited production is also the name of the game, with only about 1,000 units expected unless demand proves high enough to support more, though it will cost more than $200,000. A hybrid variant should also be available, but it’s unknown how much power this version will have or what affect the heavy batteries and extra motor will have on handling and weight - or if the hybrid system will be anything more than badging and lip-service to the concept.

The car's front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, should allow for excellent weight distribution, however. Lexus has previously billed the concept version of the car as having a top speed in excess of 200mph, and we have no reason to doubt the production version will reach its sales targets if sold unrestricted - whatever the state of the global economy.
