Due to its size, performance data and characteristics, the axle drive from Continental is suitable for numerous vehicle classes and concepts. Specifically, the drive module will take to the road in a small European car and several compact SUVs from Asian manufacturers later this year. In addition to these new electric vehicles from traditional OEMs, the new Continental technology is setting the Sion electric vehicle from German start-up Sono Motors in motion. The Sion is the first series-produced electric vehicle to have solar cells integrated into its body. The car thereby produces electric energy self-sufficiently, extending its range. To increase the performance rating of the new electric axle drive system, ZF leveraged its expertise in systems to develop a new electric motor with a maximum power rating of 140 kW paired with a two-stage shift element. Vehicles with the new 2-speed drive consume less energy, which in turn extends range by up to five percent when compared to a one-speed unit. Shifts take place at 70 km/h. By connecting to the vehicle’s CAN communication it is also possible—if the customer so wishes—to devise other shift strategies, possibly linked to digital map material and GPS. For example, the vehicle could identify from the GPS route programming how far it is to the next charging station, enabling it to respond predictively by switching into Eco-mode. More effective shifts would also be possible in accounting for topography on the interstate, and on inter-city journeys. The software in the drive can also be updated via the network link to Cloud services via over-the-air updates. For vehicle manufacturers, the new 2-speed drive offers two options for using improved energy conversion efficiency. The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) could either go for an extended range while retaining the same size of battery, or utilize a smaller batter. The 2-speed concept also offers benefits for OEMs pursuing performance. Until now, with electric motors, vehicle manufacturers have had to choose between high initial torque and a high top speed. We are now resolving this conflict and the new drive will be compatible for performance and heavier vehicles—for example for passenger cars towing a trailer. —Bert Hellwig ZF’s modular approach combines the 2-speed gearbox with even more powerful electric motors rated for up to 250 kW.   5. The 48-volt systems were previously known as mild or P0 hybrids. They involve relatively unobtrusive electrification of the powertrain. Fuel consumption is reduced mainly with the support of the combustion engine (boosting) during acceleration and the recovery of excess kinetic energy (recuperation) when the vehicle decelerates. However, purely electric driving is not possible with such systems, which Continental already manufactures for a number of automotive manufacturers. In the latest stage of development, the 48-volt system was repositioned in the powertrain. The electric motor was no longer placed in front of the combustion engine on the crankshaft, but behind it—between the combustion engine and transmission (P2 hybrid). This meant that fuel savings were able to increase and, in certain situations, such as driving through a 30 km/h speed limit zone, the vehicle could be driven using the electric motor alone. With the new 48-volt high-power technology, this hybrid system enables the same functionality as previous, full-hybrid vehicles. The key component here is a new, water-cooled electric motor, the peak output of which was doubled to 30 kW in comparison with that used previously. The developers were able to achieve a 100% increase in power while maintaining the diameter of the motor. Overall, 48-volt high-power technology requires only slightly more installation space than the previous system. The difference in weight is also minimal. However, the electric motor is not the only new component of the 48-volt high-power technology. The integrated power electronics also uses a new technology that now enables it to handle significantly higher currents. The innovations of the new 48-volt high-power technology result in a level of electrical efficiency that surpasses the previous system by almost 10%. During recuperation, the new technology is much more effective than was previously the case because the losses incurred in the electric drive system has been halved. A 48-volt system requires considerably less effort in terms of insulation protection, electrical components are smaller and cheaper, and even the design can be made significantly more compact, because smaller gaps are required between the individual components than is the case with high-voltage technology. Continental is showcasing the new 48-volt high-power technology, which is also ready for series development, in a Ford Focus test vehicle. With an eye on the new approval regulations that have been in force since 1 Septembe 2018, in accordance with the WLTP cycle, the 48-volt high-power technology could be developed even further. If, for example, the system was supplemented by on-board charging technology and a larger battery, this would make even a plug-in hybrid drive featuring 48-volt technology possible. This is because the ability to drive in all-electric mode is no longer the main criterion for benefiting from the support for plug-in vehicles.   9. Salve ragazzi. Ho un enorme dubbio sui veicoli elettrici. Come funziona la frenata rigenerativa? Il veicolo è in grado di recuperare l'energia che andrebbe persa... Ma come? In un alternatore io converto il moto in energia meccanica? Ma nelle auto ibride? Come riesco a convertire l'energia? Invertendo il campo magnetico? Invertendo il moto? Rapide E rappresenta un primo passo verso la strategia di elettrificazione che Aston Martin ha lanciato e in cui il sottomarca Lagonda giocherà un ruolo da protagonista. Nel processo di sviluppo, Aston Martin ha collaborato attivamente con la Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE). Presenta un design che denota un'aerodinamica molto studiata. And while that’s a year after this model originally was set to arrive, it’s due to a reboot of the project that’s likely to make for a better car—and one that’s a more effective cheerleader for the idea of performance EVs. Previously, the RapidE was to be co-developed by Chinese TV, smartphone, and streaming-media giant—and wannabe carmaker—LeEco (which is connected to EV upstart Faraday Future), but financial troubles led to the dissolution of that agreement. Instead, Aston Martin has enlisted the help of Williams Advanced Engineering—the company entrusted with Formula E batteries—so the RapidE is likely to have a battery pack and power-management systems that are up to the task of high-performance driving. With that serious pedigree, the RapidE should be able to sustain its performance capabilities for more than just a few acceleration runs or hot laps. More to the point, Aston says that the RapidE is based on the upcoming Rapide AMR concept—AMR being the brand’s upcoming, track-focused sub-brand. The RapidE, according to company president and CEO Andy Palmer, “represents a sustainable future in which Aston Martin’s values of seductive style and supreme performance don’t merely co-exist alongside a new zero-emission powertrain, but are enhanced by it.” Originally, this car was considered the pet project of Palmer, who took the helm of Aston Martin in 2014 and had been a booster for the performance potential of electric vehicles when he was chief planning officer at Nissan. Much like the Mission E that Porsche is busy working on, the RapidE is intended to show that going all-electric is a viable alternative in a fast four-door. With the change in development comes a serious rejiggering in the business plan, however. Aston is also setting the stage for collectibility. It will build just 155 examples of the RapidE, costing more than $250,000 each. It isn’t the only all-electric model in the works from Aston, either, so the company could benefit from keeping more of the expertise in-house; the automaker is also developing an electric version of its upcoming crossover, the DBX, which is due a few years from now.
