New Mercedes-Benz MPVs master winter testing in the Arctic Circle

  • Mercedes-Benz Vans starts final winter testing of its new MPVs – with a focus on vehicle dynamics, thermal management and interior comfort
  • 4MATIC and rear-axle steering confirmed, meeting the highest customer demands
  • High efficiency and range tested under Arctic conditions
  • The future model portfolio will range from high-quality family vehicles and exclusive VIP shuttles to luxurious limousines with an enormous amount of space

All newly developed vans will, in the future, be based on the modular, flexible and scalable Mercedes-Benz Van Architecture. Starting in 2026, Mercedes-Benz Vans will launch its all-electric models of the Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) and enter a new era. The Van Combustion Architecture (VAN.CA) will follow with state-of-the-art combustion engine vans. Regardless of the drivetrain, the new vehicle architecture allows for a clear differentiation between privately positioned vans in the luxury segment and commercially positioned transporters in the premium segment.

The portfolio of privately positioned vans will range from high-quality family vehicles and exclusive VIP shuttles to luxurious limousines with an enormous amount of space. The winter testing of the future multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) in Arjeplog, Sweden, ensures that they can withstand even the most extreme climatic conditions.

The test drives near the Arctic Circle are part of a comprehensive testing plan, which covers numerous climate zones and test routes. The test design is specifically tailored to the characteristics of the new MPVs. Particularly in focus are the vehicle dynamics and safety systems such as ESP®, as well as the ventilation and heating of the generous interior.

The test vehicles undergo an intensive programme to test their performance under extreme conditions. Both individual components and the overall vehicles are put through their paces. These Arctic conditions provide valuable insights for the completion of development and are the next major milestone on the way to reinventing the van.

“Our future MPVs herald a new era. To achieve our ambitious development goals, we are taking advantage of all the opportunities offered by digitalisation. Thanks to our Mission Control Center, we were able to optimise the data from the trips in real time. This has allowed us to significantly shorten our test time frame and make significant progress in terms of product maturity in a very efficient way.”
Dr. Andreas Zygan, Head of Development Mercedes-Benz Vans, Mercedes-Benz AG

One main objective of cold-weather testing is to analyse the behaviour of the vehicle in slippery road conditions. Compared to dry asphalt, the grip level on ice and snow is up to 90 percent lower, which has a huge impact on acceleration, stopping and changing direction.

Innovative suspension systems ensure an impressive driving experience in the new MPV. The rear-axle steering improves handling and significantly reduces the turning circle. The new Electric Architecture also allows for models with 4MATIC. The all-wheel drive not only significantly expands the vehicles' range of applications, but also ensures that they meet the highest customer requirements regardless of weather conditions. All vehicles will be equipped with the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), as well as a 800-volt DC charging system and a 22-kW AC charger.

Another focus is on the thermal management of the vehicle and its interior comfort. The vehicles are cooled down in special cold chambers before the start of a journey to ensure that all systems operate smoothly even at very low temperatures. The charging behaviour and charging management are also thoroughly tested and optimised.

The initial conclusion after about half of the multi-week test period is that even in ice and snow, the vehicles pass even the most demanding test cycles with flying colours.

Mercedes-Benz VLE drives to Rome and passes long distance tests with flying colours

  • From Stuttgart via the Alps to Rome-with just two short charging stops of 15 minutes under real life driving conditions
  • Mercedes Benz VLE demonstrates the efficiency of the new Van Electric Architecture on the long-distance journey
  • Rear-axle steering ensures easy and agile handling even in tight corners on Italian streets

Rear-axle steering ensures easy and agile handling even in tight corners on Italian streets Stuttgart/Rome. The route from Stuttgart to Rome, which took two Mercedes‑Benz VLE test vehicles, covered almost 1,100 kilometers - with just two short charging stops of 15 minutes each. The route profile: Demanding. On winding and steep pass roads across the Alps, long freeway sections, busy country roads and in narrow streets, the VLE demonstrated its suitability for everyday use, for example, for travel by families and leisure enthusiasts.

In focus: Suitability for everyday use with regard to the efficiency of the electric drivetrain as well as recuperation, thermal management and effects of the rear axle steering on vehicle handling.

The Mercedes‑Benz VLE was able to score high points here: The test vehicles easily covered the 1,090 ‑ kilometer route from Stuttgart to Rome in flowing traffic in around 13 hours. Charging took only two times for 15 minutes each time on the road. At the start in Stuttgart, the outside temperature was 11 degrees Celsius, while the arrival in Rome took place at 33 degrees. Comfort was not dispensed with, while the interior was air-conditioned to 22 degrees throughout the entire route.

The rear axle steering proved its worth in particular on winding pass roads and in the narrow streets of Italian cities. It will ensure agility and thus stress-free handling in everyday life.

"Our future MPVs have once again impressively demonstrated their suitability for everyday use on the long-distance route. With just two short charging stops from Stuttgart to the Alps to Rome - the
Mercedes‑Benz VLE demonstrates impressive efficiency of the new Van Electric Architecture."

Test drives for maturity level validation

Test drives such as the long-distance route from Stuttgart to Rome are part of a comprehensive program for testing the performance of the overall vehicle, which includes numerous climatic zones and route profiles. In addition to digital validation of the maturity level and tests in state-of-the-art test facilities at the Mercedes‑Benz Vans development campus in Stuttgart/Untertürkheim, the development vehicles are put through their paces in real operation on the road. In order to gain detailed insights into practicality and accelerate the development process to production maturity, the developers and engineers at Mercedes‑Benz carry out numerous development drives. For example, the first technology vehicles of the VLE drove from Stuttgart to the North Cape in Norway just over a year ago, and extensive cold testing was carried out in Sweden in the winter of 2025. This time, the VLE went over the Alps to the south to the Italian capital.

New Era

Starting 2026, Mercedes‑Benz will introduce its newly developed, modular and scalable Van Architecture – and sets the course for a completely new era. This architecture allows for a clear differentiation between privately positioned Grand Limousines and commercial transporters. As added value for customers is key for Mercedes‑Benz, future MPVs and transporters will suit perfectly the customers’ needs and demands, in terms of design, functions and usability.

Grand Limousines

The future models of privately positioned MPVs – also known as Grand Limousines – will be named as Mercedes‑Benz VLE and Mercedes‑Benz VLS. While the VLE with up to 8 seats will range from flexible vehicles for families and leisure active customers to exclusive VIP shuttles, the VLS will define a unique segment of its own that bestows true greatness to automotive luxury. For the first time, Mercedes-Benz will offer all-electric midsize luxury vehicles in the U.S., Canada and China (Grand Limousines).
