A meno di sei anni dall'inizio della commercializzazione, la "classe A", all'epoca un'impegnativa scommessa per Mercedes, ha raggiunto l'invidiabile traguardo del milione di unità prodotte.

A entrare nella storia del modello è la versione a passo lungo (+17 centimetri) della "A 170 CDI", a iniezione diretta di gasolio. In Italia, la gamma della vettura si compone di due varianti di carrozzeria, quattro allestimenti, altrettanti motori a benzina e due turbodiesel.
