Caught Testing: 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 “Track Pack” - Spy Shots

Chevy Camaro ZL1 gets track-ready.

Track Pack

We’ve already sampled a Camaro equipped with an aftermarket Hotchkis Sport Suspension, and called that car “just the ticket for the occasional autocross/track enthusiast who still uses his car as a daily driver.” A Shelby-tuned Ford Mustang has also been spotted turning laps at the Nürburgring, with what appears to be a heavily modified suspension (amongst other performance tweaks).

There is no saying what exactly Chevrolet engineers are planning at this early stage, though it could be something similar to the Hotchkis setup. That system included higher-rate coil springs that lowered the car 1 in., larger polyurethane-bushed tubular anti-roll bars and an aluminum brace linking the front unit-body to the rear subframe.

The hood fitted to this Camaro prototype hints at something extra special in the engine bay. The ZL1’s power bulge remains, but the slotted air intakes now include a large cold air intake. And check out the fancy test equipment mounted onto the center of each front wheel. Those wheels, incidentally, are not the same design we’ve seen on previous versions of the ZL1.

Could this foretell an even meaner ZL1, or are we looking at a model (possibly a Z28) even further up the muscle-car food chain?
