Fiat Chrysler Q1 profit nearly doubles, but debt rises

MILAN -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said its first-quarter operating profit nearly doubled to 1.38 billion euros ($1.56 billion) from 700 million euros a year ago, lifted by demand for Jeep SUVs in the U.S. and Europe, but its debt also increased.

FCA said net industrial debt rose to 6.6 billion euros at the end of March from 5.05 billion euros three months earlier, impacted by seasonality and currency effects.

Sales revenue rose 3 percent to 26.57 billion euros, the automaker said in a statement today.

The company stuck to its 2016 guidance, despite plans to recall over 1 million cars globally, including 812,000 in the U.S., to bolster a warning system to prevent drivers from leaving the vehicle without putting the gear shift in “park.”

The manufacturer forecast this year’s adjusted EBIT will rise to more than 5 billion euros, compared with 4.8 billion euros in 2015 excluding Ferrari. Net industrial debt is expected to be less than last year’s 5 billion euros without Ferrari. Fiat Chrysler spun off Ferrari at the start of this year.

After calling off efforts to pursue a merger with General Motors, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has made eliminating debt his highest priority before he leaves the post at the end of 2018.

Achieving the goal would put Fiat Chrysler in a better position to find a partner. Marchionne contends that the auto industry wastes too much money and needs to consolidate to finance investment in new technology.

Bloomberg and Reuters contributed to this report.

:)

Marchionne confirms Ram 1500 output moving to Sterling Heights in 2018

Larry P. Vellequette

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne today confirmed that production of the Ram 1500 pickup would move about 10 miles south to FCA’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant from the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in suburban Detroit. The move would coincide with the start of production of the next-generation Ram 1500 in early 2018, he said.

Marchionne, in comments during FCA’s first-quarter earnings call with analysts, also provided more details about the company’s plan to outsource production of the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 so it can build more pickups and SUVs.

He said FCA would convert Warren Truck to build a family of high-end Jeeps under the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer names, and that the replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot, known temporarily as the C-SUV, would be built in Toluca, Mexico.

Unconfirmed reports of these plans began to surface in September.

Marchionne said the product shift would result in a net increase in the number of UAW-represented hourly workers in the U.S., though he did not comment on the impact on salaried positions.

“I confirm now that the realignment of the footprint will yield an increase in manpower,” the CEO said.

Marchionne said the production realignment in North America “was driven by two conditions: We ran the exercise with the view of not losing one unit of sales in Ram and one unit of sales in Jeep.”

He and CFO Richard Palmer said talks with other automakers about building replacements for the Dart and 200 are ongoing. But Marchionne said the company’s decision to outsource production of the Dart and 200 was a direct result of the intense study he did of FCA’s business for his “Confessions of a Capital Junkie” presentation a year ago.

“I feel pretty good about what we’ve done,” Marchionne said. “It’s painful, and there’s a lot of intense activity going on right now. I think the next 18 months are crucial.”

Marchionne said that the “Capital Junkie” presentation in April 2015 -- which advocated greater consolidation among automakers -- had been productive, though it hadn’t yet borne fruit.

“I think we need to give it more time. In the absence of somebody immediately embracing the concept, I think it would take time,” Marchionne said. “It has been worth the effort, and I would do it again.”

He said he continues to have discussions on the topic with other automakers.

“I remain hopeful that somebody will pick it up with us and get it done,” Marchionne said.

Marchionne also said that, while FCA’s net debt rose in the quarter, the company had too much “unproductive” cash parked on its books. He said the company remained on target to be in a net cash position -- to have more cash on hand than outstanding debt -- by the beginning of 2018.

FCA to move Ram to Sterling Heights, Jeep to Mexico

Brent Snavely, Detroit Free Press

After months of speculation, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed today that the automaker plans to move production of its Ram pickups from Warren to Sterling Heights and will move production of a Jeep SUV from Belvidere, Ill., to Toluca, Mexico.

Those moves and others discussed by Marcionne today are part of a massive plan to shift production of smaller vehicles to Mexico while concentrating on the production of more profitable Jeep SUVs and Ram pickups in the U.S.

Despite some painful temporary layoffs, a multibillion reinvestment plan, the discontinuation of two passenger cars and the movement of a Jeep SUV to Mexico, Marchionne said no U.S. jobs would be lost.

"We have had obviously intense dialogue with our counterparts at the UAW about the implications on head count," Marchionne said. "I confirm now, as we have done with them, that the realignment of the footprint in NAFTA is actually going to yield an increase in manpower."

While most of the plans confirmed by Marchionne today have previously been reported by the Free Press and other media organizations, they had not been confirmed by the company, leading to anxiety among thousands of workers at the automaker's U.S. plants.

Marchionne said today that the overriding principle that guided the massive transformation of FCA's production footprint was to avoid the loss of the ability to make any Ram or Jeep vehicle as the company made a transition to a new or redesigned model.

"I will give you a perfect example. The Warren Truck Plant, which is historically one of the oldest plants we have in the fold of the old Chrysler and now FCA, is a plant that would have had to go through incredible surgery in order for it to accept the new Ram truck," Marchionne said. “So the realignment of the Sterling Heights plant to accept the new Ram ...allowed us to effectively re-lay out the whole manufacturing footprint by not losing one unit."

FCA shocked workers and automotive analysts earlier this year when it announced plans to eventually discontinue production of the Chrysler 200 in Sterling Heights and the Dodge Dart in Belvidere, Ill. Since then, workers in Sterling Heights have spent most of the year on layoff as sales of the Chrysler 200 has dropped by more than 60%.

Now, that plant is scheduled to begin building Ram pickups by 2018.Meanwhile, Marchionne said Warren Truck will eventually build the Jeep Wagoneer and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Until today, Marchionne has not specifically or clearly discussed plans for two different Wagoneer large SUVs.

Marchionne also said today that the automaker will build the replacement for the Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot at its plant in Toluca, Mexico, with production scheduled to begin during the second half of this year.

FCA has said those two Jeep SUVs will be replaced with a single model but has not revealed the name of the vehicle. The automaker is also preparing to begin production of the Jeep Compass/Patriot replacement at its plant in Pernambuco, Brazil, as it seeks to boost Jeep sales in South America.

Currently, the Compass and Patriot are built in Belvidere, Ill. Marchionne did not discuss the future of that plant. The Free Press has previously reported that the Jeep Cherokee, currently made in Toledo, will be moved to Belvidere.

That will give the automaker the ability to boost production capacity of the Jeep Wrangler and build a Jeep pickup truck in Toledo so it can meet demand for the Wrangler in the U.S. and export a higher volume. In 2012, when FCA discontinued production of the Jeep Liberty, it lost almost a year of production volume and profits as it retooled the plant to make the new Jeep Cherokee.

At the time, Marchionne vowed he would never make that mistake again – an idea that resurfaced when he talked about the company's planning process today.

"The realignment of the NAFTA footprint was driven by two conditions," Marchionne said. "We ran the optimization exercise with a very clear view of not losing one unit of sales for Ram and not losing one unit of sales for Jeep."

FCA US Announces Nearly $75 Million Investment in Trenton Engine Complex

  • Investment to retool north plant for production of new four-cylinder engine
  • Engine will improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions
  • 245 jobs will be retained
  • Company invests more than $2 billion in Michigan since 2009
April 26, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US announced today that it will invest $74.7 million in its Trenton Engine Complex (Mich.) to retool the north plant to produce the next generation four-cylinder engine, retaining 245 jobs. The new engine will be assembled on the flexible production line that was installed in 2012.

The Auburn Hills, Mich.-designed engine will begin production in the third quarter of 2017. The engine will provide increased power, while improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions. More detailed information about the engine’s specific application will be announced at a later date.

“This investment in our flexible production line at Trenton North will allow us to quickly ramp up North American production of this new fuel-efficient engine,” said Brian Harlow, Vice President – Manufacturing, FCA North America.

When production of the new four-cylinder engine begins next year, it will replace the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, which is currently assembled on the flex line at Trenton North. Pentastar engine production will continue at Trenton South, Mack Avenue Engine (Mich.) and Saltillo South (Mex.). The Trenton Engine Complex employs more than 1,500 people.

Since 2009, FCA US has announced investments of more than $2 billion in Michigan and added nearly 15,600 new jobs, bringing total employment in the state to 35,314 (including 21,621 hourly) people.

About the Trenton Engine Complex
The Trenton Engine Complex is comprised of two facilities, a north plant and a south plant. The Trenton North Engine Plant began production in 1952 and was idled in May 2011 after producing more than 38 million engines. It reopened in late 2011 and added a flexible production line in 2012.

The Trenton South Engine Plant opened in 2008 and began production of the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 in 2009. Trenton South was awarded a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Green Building System certification for meeting the highest environmental standards. At the time of its designation in 2009, Trenton was one of only four auto manufacturing facilities to receive a LEED rating of any kind and the only engine manufacturing facility in the world to achieve the honor.

In April 2014, the Trenton Engine Complex achieved the Bronze award level in World Class Manufacturing after demonstrating clear know-how and competence in the manufacturing methodology. World Class Manufacturing is a methodology that focuses on eliminating waste, increasing productivity, and improving quality and safety in a systematic and organized way. WCM engages the workforce to provide and implement suggestions on how to improve their jobs and their plants.
