GM to cut 25,000 jobs over three years

North American turnaround will require plant closings; GM talking with UAW

WILMINGTON, Del. -- General Motors will cut at least 25,000 employees within three years by closing additional U.S. assembly plants, GM Chairman Rick Wagoner told shareholders at GM’s annual meeting Tuesday.

Wagoner said those capacity and employment reductions will save GM approximately $2.5 billion annually. Wagoner revealed the cutbacks as he outlined a four-step strategy to revive GM’s North American business.

“In order to achieve full capacity utilization based on conservative volume planning scenarios, we expect to close additional assembly and component plants over the next few years,” Wagoner said, “to reduce our manufacturing employment levels in the U.S. by 25,000 or more people in the 2005 to 2008 period.”

No other specifics were provided.

In the cost-reduction area, Wagoner said it was vital for the company to improve efficiency at its manufacturing plants. He said plant closings and idlings in recent months have reduced assembly capacity in North America from 6 million in 2002 to 5 million by year end.

In April, GM closed a factory in Linden, N.J., and another in Baltimore in May, affecting almost 2,000 employees. GM closed a plant last month in Lansing, Mich.

“We need to get to 100 percent capacity utilization or better,” Wagoner said.

Wagoner also said in recent weeks that GM has been in “intense discussions” with the UAW on a cooperative approach to significantly reduce GM’s health care cost disadvantage.

“We have not reached an agreement at this time, and to be honest, I’m not certain we will,” he said.

GM investors have seen their shares this year fall to the lowest price in more than a decade as the automaker’s market share has slipped and GM’s bond rating has been cut to junk, or noninvestment grade, status by two ratings firms.

GM’s losses topped $1 billion in the first quarter, and sales for profitable, high-margin SUVs have slumped.

“Our absolute top priority is to get our largest business unit back to profitability as soon as possible,” Wagoner said.

Billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian’s offer to purchase 28 million GM shares at $31 apiece, boosting his stake to about 9 percent from 4 percent, expires later Tuesday.

mi dispiace un casino x quei 25.000 che nei prossimi 3 anni perderanno il posto....ma volevo fare notare come in USA si fa troppo presto a segare i dipendenti mentre da noi i sindacati operano delle richieste assurde x un'azienda,continuando a rompere i coglioni....

purtroppo dobbiamo tutti capire che se un'azienda non va bene deve licenziare......certo non con troppa facilità come accadeva un tempo,però penso che i comportamenti dei nostri sindacati siano qualcosa di cui vergognarsi...

credo che la storia del liberismo vero sia un'analisi un pochino superficiale.

Comunque credo che non sarei male un po piu di liberismo in Europa...

Quello che non capisco è questo:

i vari Top manager , AD , e compagnia licenziante, studiano un sacco di anni alle migliori università del mondo , fanno master a destra e a sinistra , convegni uno via l' altro e poi ,in tempi di vacche magre , l' unica cosa che sanno fare è licenzare gli operai come il bottegaio sotto casa che ha la licenza media ???

Diciamo che a volte spiace un pochino che le strategie sbaglaite dei vertici siano sempre pagate dalle basi. Il licenziamento e' un arma potente, ma a volte troppo facile da usare. Non dimentichaimo che anche in Italia, i modi per girare intorno all'Art. 18 sono infiniti.
