Official images of the MG5 have been released, 18 months ahead of launching in the UK. The five-door hatchback will go on sale in China imminently.

The pictures show a C-segment-sized hatchback with angular headlights and pronounced creases along the bonnet and front wings.

The Chinese market model will be powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine producing around 105bhp. European models will have a range of engines, which MG hopes will include at least one diesel unit. It had previously been suggested a range of downsized petrol engines with capacities between 1.0 and 1.5-litres would be offered, with power outputs ranging from 115bhp to 162bhp.

MG chief, Dave Lindley and head of design, Tony Williams-Kenny are both directly involved with the European development programme. The car will offer substantially different trim and suspension settings from Chinese market models.

The MG5 is is likely to be offered only as a five-door hatchback. As its name suggest, it will be have dimensions between the MG6 and MG3, which will launch in early 2013.

Che tristezza. Anni fa avevo una MGZR. Beh datemi ovviamente del tamarro ma a me piaceva da matti con quell'assetto ribassato, minigonne, alettone dietro. Ed aveva anche un bel motorino che a me personalmente non ha mai dato problemi. Il problema erano i sedili davanti strettini ed i dolori di reni che mi beccavano dopo poco.

Altro problema mi fermava spesso la polizia locale, salvo poi, una volta visti i miei capelli bianchi, mi lasciavano andar via senza neanche chiedere i documenti

Beh dentro non è nemmeno male (cambio a parte). La plancia mi ricorda le nuove chrysler/jeep!
