Toyota FCV Enters Japanese Rally as Opening Car

Toyota wants to prove fuel-cell vehicles have a racing future, so the automaker decided to enter a FCV sedan in the final stage of the Japanese Rally Championship.

The Toyota FCV won’t compete with other rally cars though, as its duty will be to act as the opening car for the event. The Toyota FCV has been specially tuned and outfitted for rally racing and will check the safety of the roads as a zero car for the 285 km (177 mile) long Shinshiro Rally, held in Aichi Prefecture on November 1 and 2.

The Toyota FCV sedan combines hydrogen and oxygen from the air to generate electricity that can power the car for approximately 300 miles (483 km) on a single fill-up.

The car only emits water vapor. The FCV will launch in Japan before April 2015 and from summer 2015 in the United States and Europe. In Japan, it will have a starting price of approximately 7 million yen ($64,185), excluding consumption tax.
