Fiat to launch new Punto model Sept 5, new 500 model in 2007

MILAN (AFX) - Fiat SpA will launch its key new Punto model on September 5, while the company also plans a new version of its small car, the 500, in 2007, said Fiat Auto official Lapo Elkann.

The company and financial analysts expect the launch of the mass-market Punto model to be a major factor in Fiat's recovery plan, and to give a strong boost to fourth quarter earnings.

'This is an extremely competitive sector of the market with (Renault's) Clio and (Opel's) Astra. The Punto is crucial' for Fiat's recovery, Elkann said.

Elkann, responsible for brand promotion at Fiat Auto, said the new Punto will not try and compete on price with Korean and Japanese models, and instead will sell on strong design of car.

Some French producers have also changed strategy on pricing, dropping their discounting strategy, he said.

However, Fiat has recently dropped prices on its older 600 model to compete with Japanese and Korean models, he said.

The Punto launch will be accompanied by various publicity and sponsoring efforts, including entry into the world rally championship, he said.

The Punto will be marketed at both young customers as well as the family, and adapt tailored campaigns for different European countries, he said.

Sales of the recently launched Croma station wagon model are 'very good', he said, citing a Corriere della Sera report that 5,500 have been ordered in a month since it went on sale.

Elkann, who is member of the Agnelli family which owns 30 pct of Fiat, declined to discuss this issue
