General Motors Chairman Rick Wagoner says observers speculating about the future of the GM-Fiat relationship are missing the most likely option: no change.

In an interview Tuesday, Wagoner said GM's 10 percent stake in the Italian automaker may remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.

"There is a greater desire for closure on this issue among certain members of the press than there is on our part," Wagoner said. "People just want a final answer, and their view is that either we own zero or we own 100 percent. And I don't see it that way."

Speculation about the relationship surged because Jan. 1 was the first date that a put option forcing GM to buy all of Fiat Auto could be exercised.

But the two sides decided to postpone activation of the put for a year - a move Wagoner says was meant to allow new management at Fiat Auto and its parent, Fiat S.p.A., time to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, Wagoner says, GM and Fiat are reaping substantial savings through their two joint ventures for European powertrain development and purchasing. They also are working together on a new small-car architecture, he says.

Those cooperative ventures were at the heart of the GM-Fiat agreement, Wagoner says. The put option and the companies' equity stakes in each other are secondary, he says.

"It is possible that these industrial cooperations will continue for the rest of our careers, and our equity position stays at 10 percent," Wagoner says. "It is entirely possible."

c'è da dire che a tutt'oggi l'aumento di capitale della fiat auto è solo parziale poichè manca la sottoscrizione di 2 miliardi di auro... e non credo che wagonner questo non lo sappia.....

poichè parla di mantenimento della quota del 10% non è escluso che tra le righe ci sia l'intenzione di immettere qualche soldino perr evitare l'ulteriore diluizione quando la restante parte dell'aumento di capitale venisse sottoscritta

i problemi sono certamente seri....... comunque a mio avviso l'obbiettivo importante sarà quello del raggiungimento del brek even del gruppo.... non solo auto.... entro il 2004.... questo consentirà molta maggiore libertà.... ad esempio fiat potrà agevolmente ritornare ad aumentar il debito avendo un rating accettabile.... cosa che ad oggi non le è possibile
