BMW denies it is interested in buying McLaren, Audi says open to cooperation

BMW is eyeing McLaren's supercar business, while Audi is looking at its Formula One unit, Automobilwoche reported.

 

 

BERLIN -- BMW denied a report that it was interested in buying McLaren Automotive, while Volkswagen Group's Audi said it was open to cooperation opportunities, without commenting specifically on the British sports-car maker.

BMW is eyeing McLaren's supercar business, while Audi is looking at its Formula 1 racing unit, Automobilwoche reported Sunday, without specifying where it got the information.

BMW will hold talks with Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat, which controls McLaren, at the beginning of next month, according to the report. Automobilwoche is a sibling publication of Automotive News Europe.

A BMW spokesman said that the Automobilwoche article is “wrong.”

Audi told Reuters that it regularly considers different cooperation opportunities but it did not comment on the specific case of McLaren. 

McLaren has been attempting to repair its finances following the impact of the pandemic.

In July, the Woking, England-based company raised 550 million pounds ($738 million) from existing investors and the sale of preference shares and equity warrants to new backers Ares Management Corp. and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. It also raised $620 million from a bond issue.

Last month CEO Mike Flewitt resigned from the supercar maker after eight years at the helm.

An Autocar source reports that Audi has bought McLaren in a deal that gives the German manufacturer complete control over the whole group and secures it an entry into Formula 1.

The change of ownership should secure the future of McLaren, which has been operating under heavy financial pressures despite an injection of capital late last year following a refinancing worth up to £500 million. It is unclear whether the latest development is linked to the recent departure of McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt, who stepped down from his role after eight years last month. 

 

McLaren stated there has been no change at a management level, while an Audi spokesperson had no official comment to add at this stage.

settimana scorsa pare che Mclaren abbia rifiutato, da capire se è la vecchia notizia o se sia stato un rilancio

Collateral damage - se non altro dovremmo avere finalmente delle McLaren che non si smontano 🥶

mah... spero almeno che in F1 continuino a correre con il nome Mclaren... peccato, per la loro storia, perché mi piace tanto Norris come pilota, e perché ho fatto con loro la trsi di laurea, Mclaren era il mio secondo team in F1, vediamo che succede

 

per quanto riguarda il lato automotive invece,  non ne capsico il senso, troppe sovrapposizioni ma per assurdo poche sinergie possibili (SUV a parte)
