Yes of course, aspirational. But probably the only company that can get there in size & sales, in future.

BYD will soon start deploying its 1000 kW ultrafast charging stations in China. The first batch of 500 chargers will begin operating in early April to prepare for the launch of the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV sister cars.

BYD unveiled its 1MW charging station on March 17, saying it can charge 400 km in 5 minutes. The official name of the charger is “Megawatt Flash Charger” and it is the world’s first EV charger that can handle 1,000 V and 1,000 A. It also doubles Tesla’s latest V4 Cabinet Supercharger, which has a maximum output of 500 kW.

BYD plans to build 4,000 1MW charging stations but didn’t previously provide a timeline. The company’s Brand General Manager, Li Yunfei, has now announced that the first 500 units will go into operation in early April.

“Some people still don’t believe it or have doubts. But BYD’s style has always been – mass production as soon as it is released. 500 units of 1000 kW charging stations will be available in April,” Li said.

BYD will equip the charging stations with energy storage systems, allowing them to deliver 1,000 kW of charging power even in areas where the local grid cannot supply enough electricity.

The 1MW charger is part of BYD’s Super e-Platform, which incorporates several other related technologies such as a 30,000 rpm motor, dual charging system, and a battery capable of 10C charging rate.

Interestingly, Han L and Tang L can be charged with two charging plugs simultaneously. This is nothing new, as BYD already tested this technology on a three-year-old Denza D9.

The Han L EV and the Tang L EV are flagships under the BYD brand. They started presales in China on March 17 at 270,000 yuan (37,300 USD). The two beasts boast a zero-to-hundred acceleration time in a two-second range, over 1000 hp, a 1000V high-voltage system, and 10C charging. The powertrain, specs, and lots of parts are the same. The main difference is that Han L is a sedan and Tang L is an SUV.

Both cars will officially launch in April and make their public debuts at the Shanghai Auto Show later that month. We will keep an eye on them.

First Test: BYD's Dual-Gun Charging System

A few EVs, namely those made by Audi and Porsche, have two charging ports. But one is usually the sole slot for DC fast charging. And no EVs can take two charging sources at the same time.

That is, unless they have a BYD badge. In order to maximize charging speeds for the times when a full-blown Megawatt charger isn't around, the Han L and Tang L carry two DC fast-charging plugs, and they can use both at the same time. This setup "can instantly transform existing supercharging piles into flash charging ones and fast charging piles into supercharging ones," as BYD puts it.

BYD has used this technology before on cars like the Denza D9 and Denza N7, two vehicles from its luxury brand. But on the Han L and Tang L, dual-gun charging goes to the next level. This latest system can use two 250 kW chargers to deliver speeds of about 500 kW at once. On two 180 kW fast chargers, you'd see speeds of about 360 kW.

That was the first order of the day in Beijing. BYD's crews plugged several Han L and Tang L EVs into two 250 kW stations at the same time. One vehicle I saw started with a 13% state of charge. When plugged into both stations, it started charging at almost 400 kW—more than I had ever seen before with my own eyes—in quick order. I watched it charge to 25% in about a minute.

That alone would be a monumental achievement for EV charging. But the main event was yet to come.

BYD plans to set up European headquarters in Hungary

BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDF) plans to set up its European headquarters in Hungary, stepping up its efforts to expand in the European market.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Hungarian government in the country's capital of Budapest on May 15, in the presence of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu, according to a statement today.

BYD announced that it will open its European headquarters and establish a new European R&D center in Budapest.

BYD's European headquarters will have three main functions: sales and after-sales, vehicle certification and testing, and model localization design and feature development.

BYD will create thousands of jobs in Budapest and provide training and education opportunities through cooperation with at least three Hungarian universities.

China is a leader in the field of electric vehicle (EV) technology, and a strategic partnership with China will help lead Hungary into the new era of EV technology, Orban said.

BYD completed its first European factory in Hungary in April 2016, which assembles electric buses.

In December 2023, BYD announced that it would build a passenger NEV production site in Szeged, Hungary, which will be constructed in phases and would create thousands of local jobs.

In January 2024, BYD signed a land pre-purchase agreement with the government of the city of Szeged for the passenger car plant.

BYD is supplying NEVs to Hungary through exports from China before local production begins.

The company launched its electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) Sealion 07, renamed Sealion 7 locally, in Hungary in February.

Other models BYD is currently offering in Hungary include the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Seal U, Tang. The Atto 3 is the Yuan Plus in China, and the Seal U is the Song Plus EV.

Comunque qualche problemino pure nella cavalcata trionfale di byd. Quest'anno pare per formare meno del mercato nonostante i numerosi lanci. Ad aprile diversi modelli vendutissimi hanno avuto cali enormi rispetto all'anno precedente. Tipo: Destroyer 05 (-74,5%), Yuan Plus (-46,7%), Song Plus (-41,9%), Tang (-41,5%), Han (-39,3%), Qin Plus (-39%) e Song Pro (-34,1%)

E quindi byd ha annunciato un taglio dei prezzi.

Temo che se dovessero calare le vendite in Cina byd inonderà i mercati esteri con l'invenduto.
