I think transition to the digital design happened in early 70s (Giulietta was developed as a digital model) and fully digital dynamic model was created in 82-83 (again using Giulietta as a mule).

Stola website can help to understand the timeline of the transition but big companies as Alfa or Mercedes or FIAT used computers from the mid 60s.

Also this forum has a topic about Giulietta development, you'll be able to find some info there. And obviously digital development of the cars and Alfa can be found in SAE papers

Grazie a tutti ragazzi 🙏.

Officially first Alfa Romeo car designed in CAD was ES30/SZ but the drawings of ES30 were crated on paper and then transferred to CAD.

10/ The use of Cad.

I was forced to use the Cad/Cam system for business needs. Actually, translating my form plan into computerized images and data and then maquette 1:1 was a waste of time, with very crude final results. Dassault's "Catia" program, used in Piacenza, was suitable for profiling natural shapes such as the surfaces of a Mirage, but not so much for controlling complex shapes such as those of a car. In order to define the wheel arch edges I was forced to convince an uncooperative operator to mislead the program. The operator's impatience

13/ Cad and design.

My opinion on the use of Cad in design is very simple: the computer should be a tool, as the pencil was once. What distorts the design process and leaves room for mediocrity is the program, whatever it may be. The computer program allows anyone to be a doctor, lawyer, writer, engineer, stylist, architect, artist, designer, graphic designer... the program is the vehicle of the globalization of professions after that of products, the results are there for everybody to see or, better, for those who want to see. The program is not the idea. Therefore, the Cam phase would be much more interesting and more useful if these problems were taken care of at the beginning.

Probably you are right, but Stefano Iacoponi mentioned new processes, compared to the previous models, that allowed to create a new model, Alfa SZ, just in 19 months.

There is a chapter "Form Sculpted by Computer' in Alfa Romeo SZ book that describe the differences between processes used in the previous models and ES30 (page 42-51)

The car used old processes required about 5 years in development. And this is exactly what happened with 164 which design development started in 1982
