Jeep® Reveals Cherokee (KM) Trailhawk Prototype In Moab

Moab Preview Hints At Off-Road Return

Jeep® quietly gave a select group of attendees at the 60th Annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, an early look at what many enthusiasts have been waiting for—the return of the Trailhawk nameplate on the all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee (KM). While the brand has yetFrom what was shown in Moab, the Cherokee Trailhawk prototype appears to be more than just a cosmetic upgrade. The vehicle sat noticeably higher than the standard model, suggesting a factory lift. It also featured smaller wheels paired with larger all-terrain tires, specifically Falken Wildpeak A/T rubber—an immediate signal that this version is being engineered with serious off-road use in mind.

Another standout detail was the wheel design. The prototype appeared to use the same 18-inch multi-piece wheel style first seen on the Wagoneer S Trailhawk Concept back in 2024, tying this new model into Jeep’s broader off-road performance design language. Up front, tow hooks were clearly visible, reinforcing its Trailhawk identity.

While Jeep has not confirmed full specifications, the expectation is that this model will feature the more advanced Active Drive Lock 4×4 system. Unlike Active Drive I, this setup is designed for more extreme terrain and includes a two-speed power transfer unit with a low-range gear, along with a locking rear differential for improved traction in challenging conditions.

The system is also expected to integrate Jeep’s Selec-Terrain management system with multiple drive modes, including a dedicated Rock mode. For low-speed control on steep or technical trails, features like Selec-Speed Control—essentially an off-road cruise control—will likely be part of the package. A factory lift, skid plates, and additional underbody protection are also expected, based on what was visible and Jeep’s typical Trailhawk formula.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Trailhawk is what will power it. Based on what we are seeing—and Jeep’s recent powertrain strategy—it’s highly unlikely this model will use the EP6 turbocharged 1.6-liter hybrid I4 found in the standard Cherokee lineup. Instead, all signs point toward the newer turbocharged 2.0-liter HURRICANE4 I4 making its way under the hood.

That engine made its debut in the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WL) earlier this year, where it delivers 324 horsepower. While Jeep hasn’t confirmed output figures for the Cherokee Trailhawk, it gives us a solid benchmark. For comparison, the last-generation Cherokee (KL) offered a turbocharged 2.0-liter GME-T4 I4producing 270 horsepower. Given that history, seeing a 300+ horsepower variant in the new Trailhawk wouldn’t be surprising and would better align with the vehicle’s more aggressive off-road mission.

Importantly, Jeep had already hinted at this model’s development during a media briefing in August 2025, confirming that a more capable variant of the Cherokee was in the pipeline. This Moab preview serves as the clearest indication yet that the Trailhawk is not only coming—but is being engineered to meet the expectations of Jeep’s core audience.

For many buyers, this is the version of the Cherokee that completes the lineup. The hybrid models deliver efficiency and everyday usability, but the Trailhawk brings back the rugged capability that has long defined the brand.

Jeep hasn’t announced when the Cherokee Trailhawk will officially debut, but its presence in Moab tells us one thing—Jeep is listening. And for those waiting for a truly trail-ready Cherokee, it looks like the wait may soon be over.
