We've already had the Mercedes R-class and Audi Q7, and now Volkswagen is considering producing a crossover of its own.

This concept car, called the Neeza, was unveiled at the Beijing motor show this week. Developed in co-operation with VW's Chinese partner Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive, the big seven-seater is unashamedly based on the Q7. Volkswagen insiders reckon a production version could be on sale before 2010.

Although the Neeza is billed as a car primarily for the Chinese market, VW has long being considering a new crossover model to fill the gap between Passat and Phaeton. And with the Q7 already based on the same four-wheel drive underpinnings as the Touareg, negligible further investment would be required to make the Neeza.

Visually, the Neeza is far less imposing than the big Audi. Distinguishing features include suicide doors that do away with the B-pillar, aimed at improving entry into the cabin, as well as additional cladding along the lower edge of the sides, designed to make the Neeza appear shorter than it is.

Inside, Volkswagen’s Chinese design team have given the Neeza futuristic trims and mood lighting. The Q7’s two-three-two seating layout has been retained to provide accommodation for up to seven.

Volkswagen isn't revealing much about the Neeza’s mechanical make-up, but hints that production versions could be offered in either rear- or four-wheel drive. Among the engines being proposed are the Q7’s 3.2-litre V6 and 4.2-litre V8 petrol units along with its 3.0-litre V6 and 4.2-litre V8 diesels.

Mi sa che sono la stessa auto...anche perche' Cina e' un mercato importantissimo per vetture alto di gamma, per esempio e' il secondo mercato al mondo per BMW serie 7 dopo USA.La vettura e' basata su Q7...
