Sulla neve il problema è il battistrada largo. E siccome nel 90% dei casi per mettere degli pneumatici più stretti bisogna ricorrere (causa misure ammesse a libretto) a misure di cerchio minori, ci si ritrova a montare pneumatici con spalla alta. Ma non è un requisito indispensabile.

La spalla bassa al massimo può far infilare più facilmente la neve tra le razze, ma una volta che si è riempito di neve lo spazio libero tra cerchio e pinze freni, l'effetto della spalla bassa è quasi ininfluente.
