    Gli Stereolab si sono imposti nella scena alternativa degli anni '90 con una formula originale, che unisce un'inclinazione per l'art rock presa in prestito dai Velvet Underground e dal kraut-rock, melodie pop francesi degli anni Sessanta, i primi esperimenti con i Moog e la new wave. Il tutto sublimato dall'affascinante voce di Laetitia Sadier. 

     

    La prima cosa che colpisce è la dimensione transnazionale del gruppo, sia per quanto riguarda la formazione che le sonorità. Il nucleo fondamentale della band è composto infatti da Laetitia Sadier, francese, e Tim Gane, inglese. La musica è un’indescrivibile miscela di troppe cose – diremo lounge music, jazz, pop, funk e bossa nova, senza comunque risultare esaurienti – impastata di psichedelia con tastiere decisamente vintage e sorretta dai ritmi motorik tipici del krautrock tedesco. Tutto sommato, una formula tanto strana da far finire gli Stereolab tra i gruppi a cui il critico musicale Simon Reynolds fece ricorso quando coniò il termine post-rock in un articolo apparso sul mensile The Wire nel 1994.
